ABOUT OUR TOWN
Clarksville is located in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. About
7 miles north of the North Carolina border, approximately 1
hour north of Raleigh, Durham and Research Triangle Park;
about 90 minutes southwest of Richmond, or 3 hours west of
Norfolk/Virginia Beach. Clarksville was built on three river
bluffs on the Roanoke River in an area which had been settled
by the Occoneechee Indians from 1250 to 1676. The town was
incorporated in 1818 and was named after Clark Royster,
owner of the site of the village. Clarksville has the oldest con-
tinuous flue-cured-tobacco market in the world, and was a
manufacturing center for processing tobacco and exporting it to
Europe until the business was destroyed during the American
Civil War. The population in Clarksville is about 1800
(Lakefront communities in a 5-mile radius increase the popula-
tion to 5,000). The climate is moderate, average annual figures
are temperature: 57.8; Janu-
ary 37.0F; July 77.5F. Rain-
fall 37”; Snowfall 6.4”; Pre-
vailing winds:south to
southwest, and west to east.

ville from Buggs Island
