PARLIAMENT RECOMMENDS MAPPING ABANDONED RURAL LAND – Artur Gil reports: Parliament recommendation to the Portugal Government in order to take measures to stop the abandonment of agricultural and forest land. They recommend the Government undertake a series of measures including Forest Intervention Zones as fundamental land management units to stop the abandonment of forest areas. - Promotion of an effective Agricultural Cadastral System to identify and map all the suitable areas for agriculture; - Create a National System for renting under advantageous conditions these agricultural lands or agglomerated parcels to farmers or groups of farmers (associations, cooperatives, etc), to young professionals preferably; - Create Forest Intervention Zones as fundamental land management units to stop the abandonment of forest areas; - Create a System of Credit and Tax Benefits to promote the grouping and cultivation within abandoned agricultural land and forests. BLIMP USED FOR NATURAL RESOURCE MONITORING AT BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK - Aircraft have been used effectively for many years as an efficient way to monitor wildlife and other resources in parks, but a staff member at Biscayne National Park wondered if there might be a better way. The end result of this "trial balloon" was a literal one – a flight in a blimp. . BARK BEETLES ATTACK COUNTY FORESTS - Larimer County for the second year in a row took the brunt of Colorado's mountain pine beetle infestation in 2010, with hundreds of thousands of acres of pine trees dying in the county's high country and foothills, according to a new U.S. Forest Service and Colorado State Forest Service aerial forest health survey.
