DOABA

Doaba (also known as the Jullundur or Jalandhar Doaba) is the region of Indian Punjab
surrounded by the rivers Beas and Sutlej. The name "Doaba" literally translates to "land of two
rivers" ("Do" two, "Ab" river; Punjabi). It is one of the most fertile regions of the world, and was
the centre of the Green Revolution in India. To this day, it remains one of the largest per capita
producers of wheat in the world.

The people of Doaba started out as agriculturalists, but have now diversified into education,
sports and entrepreneurship. The highly progressive and enterprising population has, in recent
years, suffered from demographic upheavals engendered by large scale migration to North
America, and female foeticide.

Schedule Castes form more than 35% of the population in Doaba.

The biggest cities in Doaba are Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Adampur, Nawansher and Phagwara.
Jalandhar is one of the most famous cities of Doaba. This city has highest density of hospitals in
Asia. Highest production of sports material.

INTRODUCTION
A social network service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and
reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, e.g., who share interests and/or
activities. A social network service essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a
profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services
are web based and provide means for users to interact over the internet, such as e-mail and
instant messaging. Although online community services are sometimes considered as a social
network service. In a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered
service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow
users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks.

The main types of social networking services are those which contain category places (such as
former school-year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description
pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of
these, with Facebook and Twitter widely used worldwide; MySpace and LinkedIn being the most
widely used in North America; Nexopia (mostly in Canada); Bebo, Hi5, Hyves (mostly in The
Netherlands), StudiVZ (mostly in Germany), iWiW (mostly in Hungary), Tuenti (mostly in
Spain), Nasza-Klasa (mostly in Poland), Decayenne, Tagged, XING, Badoo and Skyrock in parts
of Europe; Orkut and Hi5 in South America, India and Central America; and Friendster, Mixi,

Social networking currently has the greatest impact in the today’s web world. Modern day
youngsters and college students are mostly engaging their time in social networking websites to
stay alive with their friends.

It is no doubt that the social networking sites has the greater impact on self identity.

Youtube, the world’s famous video sharing channel which allows its users to upload or view the
videos is one of the social networking websites list. You can capture your own video, even on
the move, and could upload in Youtube using your home PC so that it can be viewed by anyone
in the world later.

It is surprising everyone that several social networking sites are in race to become the number
one in the internet world surpassing the dominance of search engines like Google and Yahoo.A
vast improvement in Digital culture is the main reason behind the increase in the popularity of
these social networking portals.

Facebook, the world’s number one social networking site, has incorporated search engines within
its portal so that one can get any kind of search without leaving the same website. You can share
your picture, favorite videos, could discuss on any topics with your friends using the Facebook.

Are Social Networking Sites a Source of Online Harassment for Teens?

Media reports on incidences of abuse on the internet, particularly amongst teenagers, are
growing at an alarming rate causing much concern among parents of teenagers and legislations
aimed at regulating internet use among teenagers. Past studies have found that one in five youth
were exposed to sexual solicitation, one in seventeen were harassed or threatened and only a
fraction reported these cases while more than 63% reported being upset, embarrassed or stressed
as a result of these unwanted contacts. Social networking sites (SNS) have been blamed to be a
major source of harassment for teen users. Despite several media reports, there is a serious
paucity of research in this area that explicitly identifies risk factors that make teens prone to
internet abuse, and strategies for prevention and intervention. This study examines the extent to
which internet use and having SNS site memberships result in incidences of stranger contact and
online harassment for teens in the United States. We also determine the characteristics of teens
that make them more likely to be victims of online harassment. Using parental background
information, we also seek to shed light on the relationship between parental awareness and teen
abuse on the internet. We use 2006 round of Pew Internet American Life Survey for this study.
Since data on social networking has been collected fairly recently and we do not have any past
information, the limitation of this study is that we cannot draw causal links between internet use
and online harassment.

The social network approach holds that the behavior of an individual is affected by the kinds of
relations, or technical ties, and networks more than by the norms and attributes that an individual
possesses. The social, informational, or material resources that two individuals exchange
characterize their ties. In social network analysis, these resource exchanges are termed
“relations.” Some positive and negative relations are assumed to be related to an individual’s
performance. Researchers empirically demonstrated that friendship and advice relations were
positively related to a student’s academic performance and an employee’s job performance. On
the other hand, the effects of an adversarial network were negatively related to performance. It
seems worthwhile to investigate the effects of the three social networks on student performance
online and offline.

This whole article tells us about the research conducted on sample size of 40 students that
what are the effects of the social networking sites on them. Three networking sites are taken and
research is done.

This article is all about a 16 year old boy from Mumbai that how kidnappers found im from his
ORKUT profile and kidnapped him. Finally the killed that boy. It is also been said that there is a
element of addictiveness in these sites which engage youth for longer period of time and thus
make it habitual.

Social media and networking sites create distractions in the workplace and cost employers
money. According to a 2009 report, employees spent on average of 40 minutes per week on
social networking sites while at work. While 40 minutes may not sound like a long time, over a
one-year period it costs employers $2.25 billion. Our latest generation of high school students
expose themselves to more social networking sites than ever before. The Internet surrounds us:
when we are not on our laptops at home surfing the Internet we use "Smartphones" and
"netbooks" to satisfy our addiction of media. Even if you have not talked to someone in a year,
you know his or her entire life story by following his or her Facebook page. According to a
recent study, a group of college students indicated a direct correlation between social networking
intensity and life satisfaction. The students who used social networking the most are satisfied
with their life.

In this article author talks about the qualities of Networking websites (may be good or bad).

By quoting a practical example where students meet their colleagues before college begins,
which helps in early start to making friends. Even children who are minor can actually talk to
adults and higher age without revealing about their personal information, gaining experience to
communicate.

These Websites are actually huge party where people meet and share information about each
other.
The major reason why teenagers get into social networking is either peer-pressure or to simply
be in sync with the fashion or trend of working on Orkut, chat, etc. The sheer fear of being left
out drives more people into this social networking business.

People use such sites differently as per their differences in their personality. For some, social
networking came in as a blessing. While many who lost their schools and college mates, got
reunited with them through these sites. There have also been many cases where friends who were
not in touch for more than 12 years, got in touch with their friends.

Another advantage is Blogging helps business connect to other businesses. Social networking
websites are used by police to search one’s history.

Today’s Technology offers new means to different solutions to mundane task. For e.g. Instant
Messaging. Youth considers itself more confident if they do blogging. Therefore computers
allow them to be more creative. Teachers found it a very important tool to help those who do not
like to write. In case of gender differences boys lagged behind girls in more than just writing
skills. Girls enjoy writing a lot. Whereas boys accept the fact that computers are very important
tool to writing.

On blogging websites people feel confident and also feel themselves as more effluent students.

In this article, Scott Nichols says that adult users use rose from 8% in 2005 to 35%
in 2008. 75 percent of 18 to 24 year olds use social networking sites, with a still respectable 57
percent of 25 to 34 year olds also using sites As expected, the percentage steadily decreases as
the age increases, but 7 percent of adults 65 and older have accounts on social networking sites--
something I found very impressive. Each of the Website caters to special demography. Myspace
caters young teens and high school students. with only 22 percent on Facebook, and 6 percent
on LinkedIn. Employment plays another major role for both young and oldage.

In This article author talks about living a parallel virtual world of internet. Internet has
successfully evaded our lives. We are so habitual to these .Com’s that we donot look for any
other information than .Com. As more and more people are getting hooked to internet, especially
youth. Most of the employees in organizations waste their time on surfing blogs than
productivity, therefore it has tempted to be a great damage to skills and time plus money.
Youngsters are so lured by these social networking trends that they spend the entire day in front
of their computers and even sacrifice their sleep. The severe addiction and techno-anxiety ruins a
person’s health and distances him from family members. Psychologists say that they receive
more than 5-6 such psychological cases in a week. Cyber dating and friendships have also
become a fad today. It eventually leads to cyber-dating-abuse which causes break-ups leading to
mental trauma and insomnia. Now they enjoy playing online games sitting in the comfort of their
rooms.

ARTICLE NO 10:-

By Amar Tejaswi

August 8, 2010

In this article author starts with example of orkut, where orkut spread its wings in india like none
other business but some time later Facebook took over it with no reasons to explain. As it is
rightly said that ‘on web your rival is just a click away’.

May be the reason was dynamics of the web, or the reason people to like to change after some
time from on place to another. In Dotcom’s case there can be sudden boom or sudden burst. For
e.g. within few weeks users of orkut left it and joined Facebook.

Twitter on the other hand owes it serendipitous rise to political controversies catching the public
eye on its own servers. It carries major star people, that helped it boom. Facebook is mainly
connecting with friends whereas Twitter lets you know what people are thinking and doing.

For any Dot.com to survive it has to take innovation seriously into its strategy. People like
change but on other hand they also avoid change.
