Module Learning Outcomes Assessed:

1. Analyse and design different types of amplifier.

2. Determine the circuit parameters and component values.
3. Simulate electronic circuits employing CAD software.

The work will be assessed by comparison with an approved marking scheme.

Fully correct solutions will receive the number of marks indicated.

Marks will be reduced for errors in proportion to their severity.

Please present your work clearly showing all appropriate circuits, graphs, equations used
for analyses and calculations. Students must demonstrate all the steps needed to obtain
the final answers.

This coursework is designed to promote familiarity with basic operational amplifier

configurations and the use of the circuit simulation software. You are required to
design an operational amplifier stage which is compliant with a unique specification
determined from your student identification (SID) number.
Design work can proceed on the assumption that the operational amplifier employed
is ideal. All work should be word processed and submitted on-line. The requested
submission format is Adode Acrobat (PDF) using your SID number for the filename
(eg 1234567.pdf).

Record you SID number in the grid below:

For example:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Your operational amplifier circuit specification is determined as follows, VOUT is the

output voltage of the circuit:
VOUT = ( A  V1 ) − ( B  V2 )

Where V1 , V2 are input voltages determined from your SID as follows: (If your digit is
a ‘0’ this should be interpreted as 10)
• V1 is the 1st digit of the specification multiplied by 10mV (1x10mV in the example
above).
• V2 is the 2nd digit of the specification multiplied by 10mV (2x10mV in the example
above).
• The 3rd digit indicates the resistance (kΩ) of the resistors connecting to the
inverting terminals of all your Op-Amps (3 kΩ in the example above). Again, if
your digit is ‘0’ interpret this as 10 kΩ.

A, B are gains of your 1st stage amplifier determined from your SID as follows: (If
your digit is a ‘0’ this should be interpreted as 10)
• A is the 4th digit of the specification (4 in the example above).
• B is the 5th digit of the specification (5 in the example above).

Task 1 is to design a 2-stage operational amplifier circuit using Multisim; the first
stage consists of an inverting amplifier and a noninverting amplifier; the second
stage is a summing amplifier. You circuit must be compliant with your specification.
Your answer should include a clear schematic diagram of the stage from Multisim
(Select OPAMP_3T_Virtual, Power supply ±12V) and a clear justification of how the
component values have been selected to comply with the specification.

Insert the schematic diagram of the operational amplifier circuit here: (15 marks)

Insert the justification for how the component values were derived here: (15 marks)

Task 2 is to demonstrate that the design performs to specification. You should

present simulation results.

Insert simulation results: (15 marks)

Note: it is very important that the work submitted is an individual effort. The
penalties for plagiarism are severe.

Notes:
1. You are expected to use the Coventry University APA style for referencing. For support and advice on
this students can contact Centre for Academic Writing (CAW).

2. Please notify your registry course support team and module leader for disability support.

3. Any student requiring an extension or deferral should follow the university process as outlined here.

4. The University cannot take responsibility for any coursework lost or corrupted on disks, laptops or
personal computer. Students should therefore regularly back-up any work and are advised to save it
on the University system.

5. If there are technical or performance issues that prevent students submitting coursework through the
online coursework submission system on the day of a coursework deadline, an appropriate extension
to the coursework submission deadline will be agreed. This extension will normally be 24 hours or the
next working day if the deadline falls on a Friday or over the weekend period. This will be
communicated via your Module Leader.

6. You are encouraged to check the originality of your work by using the draft Turnitin links on Aula.

7. Collusion between students (where sections of your work are similar to the work submitted by other
students in this or previous module cohorts) is taken extremely seriously and will be reported to the
academic conduct panel. This applies to both courseworks and exam answers.

8. A marked difference between your writing style, knowledge and skill level demonstrated in class
discussion, any test conditions and that demonstrated in a coursework assignment may result in you
having to undertake a Viva Voce in order to prove the coursework assignment is entirely your own
work.

9. If you make use of the services of a proof reader in your work you must keep your original version and
make it available as a demonstration of your written efforts.

10. You must not submit work for assessment that you have already submitted (partially or in full), either
for your current course or for another qualification of this university, with the exception of resits,
where for the coursework, you maybe asked to rework and improve a previous attempt. This
requirement will be specifically detailed in your assignment brief or specific course or module
information. Where earlier work by you is citable, i.e. it has already been published/submitted, you
must reference it clearly. Identical pieces of work submitted concurrently may also be considered to
be self-plagiarism.
