1. INTRODUCTION

Sustainable development has occupied a place on the global agenda since at least the
Brundtland Commission’s 1987 report “Our Common Future.” The world continues to face various
critical challenges such as: anthropogenic climate change, the rapid depletion of natural resources,
the frequency of natural disasters, the spread of (old and new) infectious diseases, the loss of
biodiversity, the violation of human rights, increased poverty, the dependency of our economic
systems on continuous growth in consumerism and so forth. Technology has been identified with a
host of problems and solutions that are closely linked with aims for sustainable development in low
and middle-income countries. It is an essential enabling feature of globalization, and local
applications of technology offer possibilities for building infrastructures and creating opportunities.
The impact of new technologies on society and development affects various interests and domains,
and the effective and appropriate use of technology requires consideration of social, cultural,
economic, political, and environmental contexts and effects. The opportunities and challenges
applying the technologies to old problems require the guidance from a new breed of professionals
and policymakers who can integrate technological expertise and a clear understanding of its wider
ramifications as a guide to strategies for applying technology to the tasks of achieving sustainable
development. Thus, the need of the hour is to strike a balance and have a proper blend between
techno-economic and environment concerns. At the UN conference on Environment and
Development held in 1992 at Rio, the world community reached an unprecedented consensus on
the need to fully integrate environmental concerns into the main stream of economic decision
making. Thus, Sustainable development (SD) has become a vehicle around the globe for
expressing the need to depart from present dominant models of development which appear unable
to balance the needs of people and the planet in the pursuit of peace and prosperity. Sustainable
development needs to be described for each of these dimensions in their interrelation in time (past-
present-future) and in space (near-far). A sustainable environmental management (planet) refers
to the management of development in natural ecosystems in ways that maintain the carrying
capacity of the earth and respect the non-human world.
The basic vision of this course is to inculcate the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for a
sustainable future and for positive societal transformation. Translated objectives are:

1. To develop an understanding of the range of social, economic and environmental issues


facing the world today;

2. To develop an understanding of the interrelationships among these different types of
issues; and

3. To Foster an increased quality of teaching and learning in education for sustainable


development;

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

 To provide an understanding on the methods and approaches for sustainable


environmental development and management, compatible with the ecosystems.
 To enhance the knowledge in the environmental issues and develop their skill for
sustainable environment management in general and in particular to industrial sector.
 To provide the mode of assess the impact of developmental project on environment and to
suggest appropriate remedial measures with a social aspect.
 To enhance the knowledge in environment friendly policy instruments and to adopt Clean
Development Mechanism.
 To identify the gaps and analyze the weakness in the regulatory and institutional
frameworks, and assess the mode in national capacity building.
3. STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

Certificate Course in “Sustainable Development and Environmental Management” is structured into


three major modules totaling up to 12 units. Course is proper blend of lecture, demonstration and
field studies in preexisting related courses (text or lecture-note based). Course explores the subject
through resources, development, impact and management.

The first module introduces the concept of sustainability covering basic concepts like historical
background, technology, sustainable development, international development cooperation and the
deliberations taken place in the world. This module introduces the major stakeholders and
institutions that drive change toward SD.

The second module focuses on environmental management, acknowledging the action of each
stakeholder. Participants are introduced to environmental and social standard setting bodies,
certification and firm-level tools used to implement SD strategies. Ways and mean to assess the
environmental impact and suggestive remedial measures will be learnt in this module. Brief
introduction about ISO system will be provided.

The third module addresses the strategies to implement sustainable environmental management.
Initiatives taken at the national and international level will be discussed. Clean Development
Mechanism, Rain Water Harvesting, Green Building Concepts, Corporate Social Responsibility etc.,
Application of GIS and other technology to establish sustainable environmental management will be
discussed in detail.

4. TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The teaching methodology includes face to face lectures by resource persons followed by
discussions, case studies. Field visits will also be arranged for the training purpose. In addition to
this participants need to make presentation about their country sustainable practices for
environmental management.

The program involves different learning methods such as:

 Special lectures
 Blended method of theme paper presentations
 Case studies
 Individual and group tasks/assignments
 Presentation and experience sharing
 Field studies.

5. ASSESSMENT

The learning activities in the each module are distributed in such a way to ensure the achievement
of the learning objectives in a flexible manner. In fact there are 3 different types of fixed activities
with precise dates and deadlines to be observed:

Lectures: there will be scheduled synchronous lectures. They are mandatory.
Field visit: there will be scheduled visit in which they have exposed to SD

The project, based on the themes of the course, will involve close work with a
faculty of our institute or company, a voluntary organization or a government
Project Work agency to study the innovative use of a technology for sustainable
development. Each project will be undertaken by an interdisciplinary and
multicultural group of 3 participants (maximum).
Participants are encouraged to come up with new topics for their project work. The group will attempt to
understand the complexities of technology choices, transfer and absorption in a specific case and the
relationship to the development process.

About Centre for Environmental Management

Centre for Environmental Management in National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research Chennai,
was established in the year 1990 with the assistance from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD),
Government of India. It has been upgraded with latest equipments for both water and air quality analysis. The centre
has a rich tradition of teaching, continuing education, research, consultancy and extension services. Present focus is
on areas such as water and air quality, pollution abatement, Impact of climate change on water management, waste
water treatment and reuse, landfill design, integrated solid waste management, testing on solid waste (municipal and
hazardous), green and sustainable development, geoenvironmental engineering, coastal zone management, Remote
sensing and GIS application and environmental impact assessment. In carrying out projects, the centre collaborates
with national and international agencies including business, industry and service sectors.

We at Centre for Environmental Management shall strive constantly


 To educate the future leaders of the environmental profession and to inculcate skills and foundations for life- long
learning and growth.
 To conduct research and create new knowledge as an integral part of our education programme and the
continued renewal of the profession.
