The origin of Surya Namaskar can be traced back to the Vedas. Surya namaskar is normally performed on empty stomach at sunrise which is considered the best time and by facing the rising Sun. Suryanamaskar consists of 12 different postures and is normally done along with chanting ofmantras of the sun during every posture. Given below is the procedure of doing Surya Namaskar along with the beej mantras.

In the first step stand with your feet slightly apart and palms together with thumbs against

your chest and chant the bija mantra for Sun ‘Om Hraam Mitraaya Namah’ which means salutations to him who is my everlasting friend. 2. In the second step inhale deep and slowly raise your hands over your head and bend back as far as possible while tightening your buttocks. Hold this position for three seconds and chant the mantra ‘Om Hroum Khagaaya Namah’ which means salutations to him who is source of life for all that moves in the sky.

 In the fifth step slide your left foot back until it is beside the right one and with your weight supported on your palms and toes straighten both legs. Make sure that your stomach is pulled in. Chant the Mantra ‘Om Hrim Ravaye Namah’ which means salutations to him who is shining and is the eternal source of vitality.

The left leg should be almost straight behind you with the knee slightly off the floor.  In the tenth step slowly exhale and bring your left foot forward next to your right one.  In the seventh step inhale slowly and look up by bending your head back and then raising it. followed by your upper chest and then the lower chest. Repeat this entire series of yoga exercises as many times as possible on a regular basis. In this posture the lower part of the body should be on the floor and elbows slightly bent. Now raise your head and look up as high as possible by arching your back. Try to touch your head to your knees the way it was done in the third step. In the sixth step slowly exhale and bend both knees to the floor with your hips in the air lower your chest and forehead to the floor. Hold the position and chant the mantra ‘Om Hroum Arkaya Namah’ which means salutations to him who is fit to be worshipped as the very essence of vitality. Hold the position and chant the mantra ‘Om Hraam Hiranya-Garbhaya Namah’ which means Salutations to him who is the eternal source of energy emanating from its golden core.  In the eleventh step slowly inhale and raise your arms up to stretch back the way it was done on step two.  In the twelfth and last step slowly exhale and lower your arms to your sides and relax. Don’t forget to tighten your buttocks. Hold the position and chant the Surya bija mantra ‘Om Hraha Pooshnena Namah’ which means Salutations to Him who nourishes all and gives strength. Now chant the thirteenth mantra ‘Om Shri Savitur Suryanarayanaya Namah’.
