Ans:-Counseling is helping the employee to recognize his own strengths, weaknesses
andpotential and potential and helping him to prepare action plans for own development.´Giving feedback in a ³threatening way´ or correcting the undesirable or unsatisfactorybehavior of employees by pointing it out the deficiencies or other malfunctioning andwarning them not to repeat these behaviors are all integral parts of a manager¶s role andare not the same as counseling.

2. Characteristics of counseling?

Ans:-The characteristics of counseling are,
a) Counseling is an exchange of idea and feeling between two people, a counselor and a counselee, so its act as of communication. Thus successful counseling depends on communication skill. b) Counseling may performed by both professionals and professionals. c) Counseling enhances job satisfaction and moral of the employees. d) Counseling is generally confidential and hence employee feel free to talk openly about their problem involving both job and personal problem.

3. Why we need for counseling ?
my own opinion, counseling is one way of releasing the negative events/feelings/situation and the like that somehow or perhaps really affected the way you think, behave or should i say caused a damage in you emotionally/physically... it is a sort of help especially to people who don't know how to express the way they feel, their thought and also to those whose been trapped by the past and to those who don't have outlet. Counseling is a bridge that connects again the person to present, though we can't erase the past but will be able to teach each person on how to cope, understand life's uncertainty.

4. Types of counseling ?

Ans:-There are three types of counseling,

a. b.

Directive counseling is the process of hearing a person¶s emotional problem, deciding what he should do, and then telling and motivating him to do it, the counselor perform all the function of counseling except reorientation.

Non- Directive:

counseling assumes the therapist can make intelligent guesses about what the client says/does or perhaps knows the client better than he knows himself! The "Non-" in non-directive refers to an interviewing style that reflects the client's words and statements, perhaps converting statrements about behavior into feelings.


Participative or co-operative:-

While the former is often is not accepted by independent employees, the latter needs professional to operate and hence is costly. Hence, the counseling used in most situations is in between these two. This middle path is known as participative counseling. Participative is a counselor-counselee relationship that establishes a cooperative exchange of ideas to help solve an employee¶s problem. It is neither wholly counselor-center nor wholly counseleecenter. Counselor and counselee mutually apply their different knowledge, perceptions, skills, perspectives and values to problem into the problems and find solutions.

5. Functions of Counseling:
Ans:-The general objective of counseling is to help employees to improve their mental health
and develop in self-confidence, understanding, self-control and ability to work effectively. This objective can be achieved by performing various counseling functions. They are, (i) Advice: One of the important functions of counseling is offering advice to the counselee. The counselor has to understand the problem of the counselee completely, before offering advice and suggesting a course o-f action.

(ii) Reassurance: In order to give courage to face a problem confidently, counseling provides employees with reassurance. Normally reassurance is not acceptable to the counselee. However, it is useful in some situations. (iii) Communication: Counseling will improve both upward and downward communication abilities of the counselees. (iv) Release of Emotional Tension: Releasing emotional tension is an important function of counseling. People feel emotional release from their frustration after counseling. Release of tension may not solve the entire problem, but run over mental blocks to the solution. (v) Clarified Thinking: Release of tension and thereby removal of mental blocks to the solution through counseling allows the counselee to think freely and objectively. Thus, clarified thinking tends to be the result of emotional release (vi) Reorientation: Reorientation is not just emotional release or clear thinking but it involves a change in the counselees psychic self through a change in the basic goals and values.

6. Drawback of counseling?

Ans:-The drawback of counseling are as flows:
a) b) c) d) Counseling may help an employee for better adjustment with his superior but it does not improve the working environment. Counseling attempt to change individual attitudes and behavior, which does not last in the long run. In most of the case, the employee blame their superiors or supervisors which generally objective by them , thus effecting counseling. Counseling usually following appeasement policy. Employees do not want to annoy the management by the reality.

7. Cause

of counseling need?

Ans:-The major cause of counseling needs are like frustration, job dissatisfaction,
resistance to change , intergroup conflict , interpersonal relationship etc.. In such a situation counseling facilitates in reducing the employee stressful conditions and there by returning to normal job performance and behavior. Thus counseling help an emotionally disturbed employee to become normal , develop self-confidence ,understandings so that he can work effectively.

Conflicts in organizations do not necessarily equate to a negative and unproductive environment. In fact, disagreements and arguments that lead to conflict are essential for individuals to grow and mature in their work performance. With the existence of conflicts, people realize their mistakes, understand differences in one another, and they strive to make a better organization. However, in cases when conflicts are mismanaged, the results are adverse. In order to resolve a conflict, sometimes a third party is needed and this is especially true for group conflicts. With the help of the mediator, the individuals or the groups are able to identify the issue, deal with the conflict in productive ways and reach a sound resolution. For two individual whose relationship at work and productivity are greatly affected because of a worsening conflict, counseling may be an effective method. Every organization employs counseling for their employees. The need to do counseling sessions in the workplace may be caused by various reasons. One of these is the existence of conflicts or bad interpersonal relationships among employees, including the management. When the conflict is negatively becoming public and affects the work environment, counseling might just help in working out the situation. b.


Stress is a individual reaction to demands from the self or from other individuals. The mind causes tension due to the inability of a person to deal effectively with these expectations A counselor enables the individual to identify these internal expectations and thus reduce or avoid the pressure overload which manifests. We are unable to see our thoughts clearly and it is only when we experience the external adverse effect of built up pressure in the form of anger or stress that we can appreciate the need for change. A trained counselor will help the person develop strategies to overcome their inability to think positive in a adverse environment. The cause of stress can be classified under two head. I. On ±the-job stress. II. Off-the-job stress.



On ±the ±job stress:-the job itself may be the basic cause of stress . Employee may not be able to cope with the demand of the job or the requirement of the job may be un cleared to them. Off ± the ± job stress:-Off- the- stress also affect the function of the employee . Cause of stress off the job are numerous .Some of them are ± financial problem, death in the family , marital problem , problem with children«..

8. Counseling process :Counseling is meant to help utilization of human resource in the organization. The counselor manager has to make his employee aware of their strong and weak point and to improve the strong point and overcome their weakness . ‡ ‡ Initiating  Developing mutual understanding, openness and acceptance ± rapport building Exploration  Understanding the counselee ± situation, feelings, strengths & weaknesses, problems and needs. Formulation of Action Plan  Culminating point.  May take more than one session.
