WE PASS the COMETS' TRAILS and come upon the planet Vulcan
with the USS ENTERPRISE still in orbit.
SPOCK (V.O.)
Stardate 2258.42. While the essence
of our culture has been saved in
the elders who now reside upon this
ship... I estimate no more than ten
thousand have survived.
(Beat)
I am now a member of an endangered

GUARDIAN VOICE
The artifact is of the past,
brought and left by one from the
future.
T'POL
(Quiet Speculation)
My people have suffered much since
our planet was destroyed. Once, we
were masters of ourselves, our
environment, and of logic. Now, we
are forced to settle in a strange
land and rely almost entirely on
charity and our wits to survive.
Some wonder if our logic and
passivity have led us to ruin, and
despite my years of knowledge and
experience... I have found it hard
to argue the point. Now... This.
(Beat)
I fear that this may be an omen of
dark days to come.

OPS COMMANDER
This little slice of hell is home
to an abandoned cybernetics
facility. It contains sensitive
equipment and is currently guarded
remotely by Starfleet Security.
Someone has broken in and tripped
the alarms, so with blueprints on
your tricorders, you are to survey
the site, take an inventory, and
note anything that's missing.
Should you encounter an intruder,
stun on sight, but do not kill.
This is a classified operation, so
whatever happens on Omicron stays
on Omicron. Any cool shit you see
is strictly hands off. Got it?
OPS TEAM
Hands off the cool shit, sir!
OPS COMMANDER
Now hike up your skirts and fall
out!

OPS SOLDIER 3
Commander, I found a large
cryogenic storage chamber. It
appears to have its own power
source, but the glass doors are
broken and its shelves empty. I'd
say whatever was stored here hasn't
been missing very long.
LORE (O.S.)
Not missing.
OPS COMMANDER
(Over COM)
Anyone, come in. Is there anyone
left?
LORE (O.S.)
Just me.
The Ops Commander turns and aims his phaser rifle at Lore.
OPS COMMANDER
You're... not human.
Lore grabs the Commander by the throat and lifts him up.
INTRUDER
I am Lore, servant of Kronik.

KRONIK (V.O.)
Three centuries ago, Vulcans joined
with Earth and a handful of allies
to forge the United Federation of
Planets.
KRONIK (V.O.)
Two centuries later, the Vulcan
home world was destroyed in an act
of vengeance against that
Federation.

Federation worlds, sharing their

CUT TO:
KRONIK (cont’d)
For a millennia, we Vulcans have
taken pride in our logic, but where
is that logic taking us? Should we
maintain an alliance that has led
us to ruin, or reunite with distant
cousins whose protection might
allow our civilization to reemerge
as it should? What is so logical
about remaining puppets of inferior
masters and letting hardship turn
us into minorities on our own
world? Others questioned this
corrosive alliance long before
Vulcan’s destruction, yet for their
loyalty and foresight, they were
called extremists and bigots. To
all of my displaced brethren, I
swear to resolve this once and for
all. Since too much time has passed
for a successful rebellion in the
present, my partner and I will use
the Guardian portal to protect our
future by ending this alliance in
the past - putting us on a new path
of resurgence and independence.

ADMIRAL NECHAYEV
That arrived shortly after a
Starfleet Special Ops team was
killed at an abandoned cybernetics
facility. The attacker is an
android which we believe was
reactivated and programmed shortly
before their arrival. After this
briefing, you’ll all be assigned to
act as specialists and advisors in
your fields aboard a small fleet of
ships tasked with intercepting
Kronik and his partner at the
Gateway Planet before they enter
the Guardian portal. No pun
intended, but time is of the
essence, so anyone with questions
should ask them now.
PSYCHOLOGIST
Wasn't a similar threat issued a
century ago? Nothing came of that,
so why take it so seriously now?
CAPTAIN
Vulcans were Earth's first alien
allies and cofounders of Starfleet
and the Federation. An end to that
alliance could have a disastrous
domino effect.
FIRST OFFICER 1
But isn't the term Vulcan terrorist
sort of an oxymoron?
DEANNA
Vulcan emotions are intense, but
controlled, Commander. You don't
have to feel fear, yourself, to
cause it in others.
CAPTAIN
Besides, Kronik is right. There
have been Vulcans opposed to our
alliance from the beginning. They
believe we humans are just too
emotional and... inferior.
ADMIRAL NECHAYEV
Deanna Troi is half Betazed
psychologist with expertise in
anthropology and criminology. She's
here to brief us on New Vulcan's
current political climate. Deanna?

DEANNA
As Kronik says, there are probably
some Vulcans that feel like
minorities on their new world.
Since their culture doesn't allow
them to be so forthcoming, we can't
predict exactly how much his
message will resonate, but there
are more subtle signs of resentment
towards the Federation which could
conceivably intensify as a result
of this... manifesto.
ADMIRAL NECHAYEV
If Kronik succeeds, we may not have
a chance to undo the damage if
we’re even aware of it. As
advisors, you need to be aware
this, but for the sake of public
safety, everything we’ve discussed
is classified until this crisis has
passed. Should Kronik arrive in the
next 24 hours, we already have a
small recon crew being led by
Commander William Riker. Two are on
the planet while the others are in
Gateway's orbit aboard an armed
shuttle with orders to pursue.
DEANNA
Imzadi...

Phaser banks are recharging.
GUNN
Our shields are down another twenty
percent.
RIKER
That's why I'm trying to get us out
of the way, Ensign Gunn - hopefully
without losing this guy.
SISKO
(Under breath)
Unless he loses us first.
RIKER
'Something to say, Lieutenant?
SISKO
Sorry, sir. I'd just hate to think
of a time line in which my son was
never born.
RIKER
We all have something to protect,
Ben - starting with our lives.
GUNN
Hard to believe we're actually
chasing a Vulcan shuttle.
RIKER
‘Looks like Surok Class, late 22nd
century. They’re old as dirt, but
also sturdy and fast. I’ve seen
reports of some Orion pirates that
still use them to raid Tellarite
and Andorian mines.
SISKO
Whatever they’re doing, sensors say
they’re headed straight for the
portal.

RIKER
Let's see if we can take out one of
the engines.
SISKO
Phasers charged, but at this
range...
RIKER
Can we throw something at it?
SISKO
I might be able to reroute power
from the navigation console, but
we'll lose auto-nav and I still
doubt it will be enough.
The cruiser dodges the torpedo and answers with more phasers.
RIKER
Damn.
SISKO
Are you sure about this, Will? One
of us could...
RIKER
(Interrupts)
Thanks, guys, but this one's on me.
Besides, we need that auto-nav to
keep us in the fight.
White knuckled, wincing from the wind, Riker holds the laser
rifle with one hand and the ladder with the other.

(Hoists Rifle & Aims)
This is for ruining my vacation,
ass holes.
DEANNA
Admiral.
ADMIRAL NECHAYEV
Ms. Troi?
DEANNA
I realize this is unusual, but I'd
like to request assignment aboard
the lead ship. It'll get to Gateway
first and...
ADMIRAL NECHAYEV
(Interrupts)
And will be the one that picks up
Lieutenant Riker. I can't make any
promises, Deanna, but... I'll see
what I can do.
DEANNA
Thank you, Admiral.
(Beat)
If you don't mind, I was
wondering... with so many off-
planet, has Starfleet chosen a
Captain to lead this mission?

Doctor Crusher.
(Beat)
May I come in?
(Entering)
You look... busy.
BEVERLY
It's called being a mother.
(Closing door)
Actually, I was on extended family
leave - even considered resigning,
but, you know... I’m still pretty
young, and besides, it's Starfleet.
What else is there?
(Beat)
You seem to be holding up all right
- what with the court martial and
all.
PICARD
Yes, well, I think they realized
their prosecutor is a bit...
overzealous.
BEVERLY
Maybe they think losing your best
friend was punishment enough. I
know it has been for me.
BEVERLY (cont'd)
You don't need to stall, Jean Luc.
I know what's going on.
PICARD
Then you know how serious this is.

we’re all doomed.

PICARD
An Ops team is dead - killed by
while investigating a break-in on
Omicron. One of their body cams
picked up the killer linking
himself to a Vulcan radical wanting
to sabotage our alliance. He says
he’ll enter the past through the
Guardian Portal and sever our
alliance shortly after Vulcan's
destruction. Consequences to
Starfleet and the Federation could
be devastating. I’m leading a small
fleet to intercept him, but
commanding a new crew won’t be easy
this soon after the Stargazer
hearings. I need someone with me of
command grade that I know and
trust.
(Beat)
I need you.
Beverly sighs as she steps back and turns away from Picard.
BEVERLY
You know, I imagine you saying
something like that to Jack. I’m
sure he bought into it, too. He
followed you around the Academy
like you were his own personal god.
‘Guess he figured you’d be the last
one to get him killed.
(Turns to Picard - Bitter)
I know you can play the rebel
sometimes, but deep down, Starfleet
has always meant more to you than
people, hasn't it, Jean-Luc?
PICARD
Damn it, Beverly, I did not kill
your husband.
PICARD (cont'd)
You know full well the risk that
comes with the job.
BEVERLY
Do you even hear yourself? Jack was
my husband. Wesley's father.

me how all that stuff about duty
and risk makes any of this fair?
WESLEY
Uncle "John!"
PICARD
Hello, young man. What have you got
there?
WESLEY
A star ship!
PICARD
A star ship, huh?
PICARD (cont'd)
You know, your daddy and I learned
about this ship in school.

Captain's log, Stardate 2265.18. -
James T. Kirk commanding. Our five
year mission is nearing its end,
and we’re all proud of what we’ve
accomplished.
KIRK (V.O.)
Since launching the Enterprise-A,
we’ve charted and lent aid to
numerous worlds, making or
assisting in successful first
contact three times this year,
alone.
KIRK (V.O.)
The sudden loss of Lieutenant
Chekhov has been hard, particularly
