Many people can’t wait to be legal so they can do whatever they want to do and whenever they want to do it. In these very similar stories, “Harrison Bergeron,” Gattaca, and Anthem ,that is taken from them. Society says that these characters, Harrison Bergeron , Vincent and Equality, are to do what they are told, Even if what they’re told is unspoken. Harrison Bergeron tries to take over, Vincent, who becomes Jerome, commits fraud, and Equality breaks away from his brothers. All three of these males have something in common; they are loyal to themselves instead of to society. In “Harrison Bergeron,” Gattaca, and Anthem the main characters have similar out looks on life; they determine their own fate by doing what they believe in no matter what. Society rejects Harrison,a 15 year old boy, because he has every superior qualities. He has heavier handicap bags than everyone else. He is smarter. He has scraps of metal on him. He is stronger. He has glasses, a clown nose, and caps on his teeth. He is better looking. He is everything society frowned upon. He is considered “abnormal”(pg.1) but in all actuality he was superior to the rest of society. His plan was to over throw the government. “Harrison tore off the handicap hardness like wet tissue paper, tore straps guaranteed to support 5,000 pounds.” (pg.5) He proclaims, “ I am emperor!” “… Everybody must do what I say at once!”
Alexcis Hicks 2 He stomps his foot and the whole studio shakes.(pg.5) This shows that he is the only one brave , smart, or strong enough to even dare to try something like that. Some people believe that they predict your fate or future; however, Vincent does not. When Vincent is born there is a blood test done that determines his fate. His blood tells the doctors and if family many things, such as if he was intelligent or not or even if he will have heart problems. Vincent used a ” borrowed ladder” to fake his identity, now he shall be called Jerome Morrow. Vincent/ Jerome tells Irene “for all that it is worth, I’m here to tell you that it is possible” He is telling her that despite of what everyone else says, you don’t have to be who they want you to be, no matter what your blood test says. They obliviously aren’t very accurate! The real Jerome Morrow tells Vincent that he has made a life time supply of samples for him before he goes on his flight. Vincent replies, “I won’t need them where I’m going.” Vincent makes it very lucid that he is proud of himself, and he should be, for making it more than just two inches closer to the stars on own his own knowledge. Equalitys’ name should be individuality. Equality is doing the complete opposite of what is expected of him. Take this quote for an example, “it is a sin to think… or do alone,” (pg.17) let alone write a book about your feelings, which is what he is doing. On page 52, it says “No single person can posses greater wisdom than many scholars…,” Equality does in fact believe this for a while, but at this time when he says, “we do not know but we shall learn.” (pg.54) He now realizes that e does not need the brothers. He also discovers that he is smarter than many others. After liberty gets to know equality she names him “The unconquered” (pg.56) Because he is so brave and smart, she names him the perfectly chosen name, the unconquered.
Alexcis Hicks 3 In the stories “Harrison Bergeron,” Gattaca, and Anthem the main characters Harrison Bergeron, Vincent and Equality are accomplishing being themselves despite of society. They all are in similar situations and they are prospering toward their goals. These three males alike, they fought for what they believed in and what they wanted. They are not living for anyone but themselves. Harrison Bergeron, Vincent and Equality are doing what had to be done even if this means dieing for what they believed.
