‫‪Ali Hassan was born in Doha, Qatar in 1956. He‬‬ ‫ولــد علــي حســن فــي الدوحــة‪ ،‬قطــر عــام ‪ 1956‬وهــو‬
‫‪has a BA from Qatar University in history,but his‬‬ ‫حاصــل علــى بكالوريــوس فــي التاريــخ مــن جامعــة‬
‫‪long involvement with Arabic calligraphy began in‬‬ ‫قطــر‪ .‬بــدأ انخراطــه الطويــل فــي الخــط العربــي فــي‬
‫‪1972 with work as acalligrapher for several local‬‬ ‫عــام ‪ 1972‬بالعمــل كمنســق فــي العديــد مــن الصحــف‬

‫‪Ebtisam Al-Saffar‬‬
‫‪Ebtisam al-Saffar is a polymath. An artist, mother,‬‬
‫‪teacher, housewife and an explorer. Born and raised‬‬
‫‪in Qatar, Ebtisam did her Bachelors at the Qatar‬‬
‫‪University in the mid-90s before she set out to show‬‬
‫‪her talent to the world. Each of her works is a story‬‬
‫‪in itself. “Sometimes it’s not easy for me to verbalise‬‬
‫‪or express what is needed to be said; hence, I let my‬‬
‫‪work do the talking,” she says. Her work betrays a‬‬
‫‪refreshingly candid view of the world that surrounds‬‬
‫‪her. “To me, it’s a way of communication, a way to‬‬
‫‪speak to people, the community and share my point‬‬
‫”‪of view on life.‬‬
‫‪Known as much for her scintillating bursts of colour,‬‬
‫‪recently she has been focusing more on portraits of‬‬
‫‪women in her works. “Women have a big role to play‬‬
‫‪in society; they give life and, the system of life,” says‬‬
‫‪Ebtisam. Looking at the women in her paintings, you‬‬
‫‪sense as if they are staring out of those canvases‬‬
‫‪with gracefully drawn modelled faces in which the‬‬
‫‪strength of line is balanced by gentle volume and‬‬
‫‪colour. The faces have a pleasant yet quizzical look‬‬
‫‪towards the viewer, with a thoughtful expression,‬‬
‫‪and if you gaze into those eyes it’s as if they are‬‬
‫‪looking at you, too.‬‬

‫ابتسام الصفار‬
‫ابتســام الصفــار المتعــددة المواهــب‪ .‬فنانــة وأم‬
‫ومعلمــة وربــة منــزل ومستكشــفة‪ .‬ولــدت ابتســام‬
‫ونشــأت فــي قطــر‪ ،‬حصلــت علــى درجــة البكالوريــوس‬
‫مــن جامعــة قطــر فــي منتصــف التســعينيات قبــل أن‬
‫تنطلــق إلظهــار موهبتهــا للعالــم‪ .‬كل عمــل مــن أعمالها‬
‫هــو قصــة فــي حــد ذاتــه‪« .‬فــي بعــض األحيــان ليــس‬
‫مــن الســهل بالنســبة لــي أن أتحــدث أو أعبــر عمــا يجــب‬
‫قولــه ؛ ومــن ثــم أتــرك عملــي بــدوره ليتحــدث عنــي»‪.‬‬
‫كمــا تقــول‪« :‬يعطــي عملــي نظــرة صريحــة ومنعشــة‬
‫للعالــم الــذي يحيــط بــي‪ ,‬فبالنســبة لــي‪ ،‬هــو طريقــة‬
‫للتواصــل و التحــدث إلــى الناس والمجتمع ومشــاركتهم‬
‫وجهــة نظــري فــي الحيــاة»‪.‬‬
‫اشــتهرت كثيـ ًـرا بألوانهــا المتأللئــة‪ ،‬وقــد ركــزت مؤخـ ًـرا‬
‫بشــكل أكبــر علــى صــور النســاء فــي أعمالهــا‪ .‬تقــول‬
‫ابتســام‪ « :‬للمــرأة دور كبيــر فــي المجتمــع‪ .‬المــرأة‬
‫تعطــي الحيــاة ثــم تنظمهــا»‪ .‬بالنظــر إلــى النســاء فــي‬
‫لوحاتهــا‪ ،‬تشــعر كمــا لــو أنهــن يحدقــن من تلــك اللوحات‬
‫ذات الوجــوه المرســومة برشــاقة‪ .‬تلــك اللوحــات التــي‬
‫تتــوازن فيهــا قــوة الخــط مــع لطافــة الحجــم واللــون‪.‬‬
‫تتمتــع الوجــوه بنظــرة لطيفــة ومثيــرة لالهتمــام تشــد‬
‫المشــاهد بتعابيــر مدروســة‪ ,‬فــإذا حدقــت فــي تلــك‬
‫أيضــا‪.‬‬

‫‪Eman Al-sulaiti‬‬
‫‪Qatari artist Eman Alsulaiti, a portrait artist who‬‬
‫‪focuses on facial expressions and facial details,‬‬
‫‪especially the eyes. Eman has been ‘drawing’ for‬‬
‫‪over 25 years; she studied and practiced with‬‬
‫‪several art masters in Qatar and abroad to master‬‬
‫‪her skills and techniques. Her medium includes oil,‬‬
‫‪watercolour, graphite and coloured pencil.‬‬

‫عامــا وقــد تعلمــت‬‫إيمــان ترســم منــذ أكثــر مــن ‪ً 25‬‬
‫ومارســت الرســم مــع العديــد مــن أســاتذة الفنــون فــي‬
‫قطــر والخــارج إلتقــان مهاراتهــا وتقنياتهــا‪ .‬تعتمــد فــي‬
‫لوحاتهــا علــى األلــوان الزيتيــة والمائيــة والجرافيــت‬
‫وأقــام الرصــاص الملونــة‪.‬‬

‫‪Shatha Al-Shammari, a well known as a person‬‬ ‫شــذى الشــمري المعروفــة باإلنســان الــذي يعيــش‬
‫‪whose living two different worlds in one day, being‬‬ ‫عالميــن مختلفيــن فــي يــوم واحــد‪ .‬فهــي مهندســة‬
‫‪an Engineer with the sunrise and an Artist with the‬‬
‫مــع شــروق الشــمس وفنانــة مــع غروبهــا‪.‬‬

‫‪Born in a cabin without electricity in the remote‬‬
‫‪mountains of northern California, Levi Hammett‬‬
‫‪developed a deep interest in the vastness of‬‬
‫‪geographic space together with the concept and‬‬
‫‪process of location. Raised in a blue collar family‬‬
‫‪he worked as a sign painter and carpenter before‬‬
‫‪pursuing a formal education in design focusing on‬‬
‫‪coding and automation. This background developed‬‬

‫‪Michael Hersrud is a multidisciplinary designer‬‬

Michael Perrone
Michael Perrone is an American artist who graduated
from Muhlenberg College with a degree in Russian
Studies and Political Science. He went on to study
art and art education at The School of The Museum
of Fine Arts - Tufts, and received an MFA in Painting
from The University of Pennsylvania in 2004. From
2004 - 2010, Perrone was an Assistant Professor of
Painting and Drawing at the University of Iowa, in
Iowa City, Iowa. He has mounted two solo exhibitions
with Michael Steinberg Fine Art in Chelsea, New
York City, and has participated in numerous group
exhibitions internationally. Perrone’s work has
appeared in: The New Yorker, Elle Decor, O at home,
and Time Out New York. Since 2012, he has been
an Assistant Professor of Painting with Virginia
Commonwealth University School of the Arts. He is
currently a member of the Painting + Printmaking
faculty at VCUarts Qatar. Perrone, with his wife
– painter Mariah Dekkenga – recently founded an
artist residency and gallery, v_e_s_t_i_b_u_l_e, in
Randolph, Vermont, USA.

Ryan Browning
Ryan Browning is a painter and interdisciplinary
artist. His paintings have a way of simplifying
imagery to a cartoonish state without losing the
specificity of the objects he is portraying. He draws
inspiration from virtual and role playing game worlds,
often portraying these imaginary spaces without
the presence of figures, as if they had just walked
out of frame. In painting, he works in a Miroesque
style of flattened, layered subject matter, painting in
both gouache and oil.His sculptures and time-based
works rely on a variety of digital tools to extend the
whimsical alter-reality of these paintings into real
space.
Ryan teaches VCUQ’s First Year Introduction courses
within the Art Foundation Program. Additionally,
he has taught subjects in painting, drawing, world
building, physical computing, digital fabrication, and
portfolio development.
Ryan received a BA in Art History and Curatorial
Studies from Brigham Young University in 2005,
with an emphasis on Middle Eastern and Near
Eastern cultures. Following this, he received an MFA
in Interdisciplinary Art in 2008 from the Maryland
Institute College of Art’s Mount Royal School of Art
program. His creative work has been written about in
The New York Times, ARTnews, ArtMaze Magazine,
Art F City, and others. He has recently exhibited at
ADA Gallery (Richmond, VA), Mother Gallery (Beacon,
NY), Resort Baltimore (Baltimore, MD), Mulherin
Pollard (NYC), Allegra LaViola (NYC), VOLTA NY (NYC),
