Introduction One of the most significant challenges hospitals confront today is how to develop a universally competent, professional nursing workforce during a time of severe shortage. Competence and professionalism can be measured by patient safety and quality of care patient outcomes. Nurses, who are knowledgeable, display

professionalism in their communication styles, develop effective relationships with patients, families, other professionals, while committing to nursing excellence and lifelong learning can significantly impact the quality of healthcare worldwide. Community health nursing is a unique area of nursing practice that extends the delivery of professional nursing care beyond the walls of hospitals to every conceivable environment in which the recipients of care may be located. In the course of completing this project it has become evident that while the technical skills of nursing in the community differ little from the skills used in other health care settings there are significant underpinning principles, philosophies and attitudes that enable the

community health nurse to function as an autonomous professional in diverse settings. These attributes are often difficult to quantify objectively. Data will be collected through the use of survey questionnaires which will be treated using both descriptive and inferential statistics. What is the competency of the graduating nursing students in Community Health Nursing along with the following areas: 1. it will attempt to answer the following questions: 1. Never-the-less this project has undertaken to present a competency statement and units that describe the role of the community health nurse as well as the clinical instructors teaching community health nursing and communicable disease nursing to nursing students and provide a framework to support other nurses entering this challenging but rewarding area of health care delivery. This will also cover fourth year student nurses of the same schools to which this study will be conducted. Subject of the Study The subjects of the study are all graduating nursing students from selected Colleges of Nursing Daughters of Charity St. Setting of the Study Locale of this study will be at Daughters of Charity Educational System.
