AIRCRAFT INSPECTION
PRELIMINARY STAGE
Course Objectives
. Program Objectives:

◦ Cognitive (Knowledge) : Be able to learn about the maintenance tasks, the

documentations, tools, equipment and standard procedures
performed on an aircraft.

◦ Affective (Attitude) : Nurture the importance of patience and wisdom in mastering the
basic functions of the aircraft maintenance and inspection.

◦ Psychomotor (Skills) : Be able to simulate the standard procedures regarding

documentations and maintenance performed on an aircraft.
Definitions
Aircraft Inspection - are visual examination and manual checks to determine the condition of an
aircraft or component
- can be a walk around to a detailed inspection involving disassembly and the
use of complex inspection aids.
- Report can be made by the pilot or mechanic or crew flying an aircraft.

Aircraft logs - is an inclusive term which applies to the aircraft logbook and all supplemental
records concerned with the aircraft.
Aircraft logbook - is the record in which all data concerning the aircraft is recorded. Information
gathered in this log is used to determine the aircraft condition, date of
inspections, time on airframe, engines and propellers.
Aeronautical publications are the sources of information for guiding aviation mechanics in the operation and
maintenance of aircraft and related equipment.
Service Bulletin - Publications issued by airframe, engine and component manufacturers.
Maintenance Manual Contains complete instruction for maintenance of all systems and components
installed in the aircraft.
Definitions
Overhaul Manual - contains brief descriptive information and detailed step by step instruction covering
the work normally performed on a unit that has been removed from the aircraft.
Structural Repair Manual Manufacturers information and specific instruction for repairing primary and
secondary structures.
Airworthiness Directives Publication issued by authorities to notify the aircraft owners and other interested
persons of unsafe condition and to prescribed the conditions under which product
may continue to operated.
Type Certificate Data Sheets Describe the type design and sets forth the limitations prescribed by the applicable
CFR part. It includes any other limitations and information found necessary for type
certification of a particular model aircraft.
Illustrated Parts Catalog Presents component breakdown of structure and equipment in disassembly sequence.
Also included are exploded views or cut away illustrations for all parts and equipment.
Minimum Equipment List A reference document includes that if inoperative may either ground the aircraft or
allow it to be flown with the flight restrictions deferring maintenance for specific
period of time.
Definitions
Required Inspections - Approved inspection program for aircraft operation like 100 hours inspection for small
aircraft performed for every one hundred hours inspection.
Annual Inspection - Most type of inspection required for small general aviation aircraft, performed every
12 calendar months must complete and performed and determine if the aircraft meets
all the requirements for its certification.
Progressive Inspection - Progressive inspection allows the work to be divided into smaller portions and
performed in a shorter period of time.
Continuous Airworthiness - Designed for commercial operators of large aircraft operating under part regulations.
Inspection Program Currently utilized by an air carrier that is operating that particular make and model
aircraft
Conformity Inspection - is an element of all aircraft inspection programs and performed to determine whether
the aircraft conforms to or matches its approved specifications.
Basis for Inspection Scheduling
1. Flight Hours - the flight hour system are inspected when a specified number of flight
hours are accumulated.

2. Calendar Inspection - performed on the expiration of a specified number of calendar week

Scheduled replacement of components with stated hourly operating limitations is normally

accomplished during the calendar inspection falling nearest the hourly limitation.
Work Cards - act as control documents in the continuous inspection process.
Job cards are issued for all aspects of CAMP inspections and
are used to organize inspection instructions and account for
the specific steps involved.
provides an outline of a specific area of the aircraft inspection.
Recurring airworthiness directives and manufacturer's service
bulletins are usually incorporated on work cards.
provides accountability columns where the inspector or
maintenance technician signs off each step as it is inspected
or serviced.

VERNIER CALIPER READING

A linear measuring instrument

consisting of a scaled rule with a
projecting arm at one end, to
which is attached a sliding vernier
with a projecting arm that forms a
jaw with the other projecting arm.
MICROMETER

A gauge that measures small distances or

thicknesses between its two faces, one of which can
be moved away from or toward the other by turning a
screw with a fine thread.

IDENTIFICATION OF FLUID LINES
Large aircraft contain plumbing systems for many different types of fluids. Because of
this, it is important that each line be clearly identified. This is generally accomplished by
marking tubing with color bands, symbols, or writing. The symbols are generally printed
on one-inch wide tape or decals and secured at regular intervals along a line. On lines
four inches or larger in diameter, or those subject to extreme temperatures, steel tags
are used instead of marking tape. In areas where there is the possibility that tape,
decals, or tags may be drawn into the induction system, paint is used.

In addition to color bands, some lines carrying fuel are marked with the word "FLAM."
This identifies the lines as carrying a flammable fluid. Lines carrying fluids that are
physically dangerous such as oxygen, nitrogen, or Freon are marked "PHDAN.“

Additional markings are sometimes provided to identify a line's function. These include
PRESSURE, RETURN, DRAIN, and VENT.

Zonal Inspection

Airplane Zoning
The Model 172 is divided into numbered zones to provide a method for locating
components and/or placards throughout the airplane. The zones are identified by a
three-digit number as shown in the example below. The first digit in the sequence
denotes the major zone (300 series for aft of cabin, 500 series for left wing, etc.). The
second digit in the sequence further divides the zone into submajor zone (Zone 510
for inboard portion of the left wing and Zone 520 for outboard portion of the left
wing, etc..). The third digit further divides the submajor zones into subdivisions (if no
subdivision is needed, this digit is typically assigned as 0 (zero).
