From the Pastor’s Desk – March Madness The week before I left to go to Russia, all four of the NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball teams lost within days of each other! There have been many exciting twists and turns in the basketball season as it nears the end of the regular season. It was also exciting to see WVU take care of Notre Dame recently! Koreen, Allison, Thomas, Bobby and I have been able to catch some local college action at Rex Pyles Arena as well. I am finding that that several of us like to support our A-B Battlers. It is great to see familiar faces as we enter the coliseum for an event. Maybe it comes from being from a small town where each sporting event became one of the most happening things for the week, but I love to go and cheer on the athletes who I am there to support. There is a ―madness‖ that seems to sweep through the ranks of those like to watch a good basketball game. The game transforms into a many layered composition between the teams, coaches, referees, and fans. Each group has its part to play in the orchestration of the game. The event of life following Jesus should produce a similar type of excitement! This past month has been a series of highlights for our community of faith as well. As we hosted a chance to watch ―The Big Game‖ in professional football on the first Sunday of February, almost 40 folks gathered to have fellowship together. We also sponsored a family game night at the end of January that was well attended. We have several new families coming and it is awesome to hear their comments of what they have been experiencing here at Philippi Baptist! They have been saying how wonderful the people are. You continue to open your arms to our college students as they come to worship with us. One of our college students sent me a Facebook message that said she was so thankful for Philippi Baptist and the connection to God she has experienced while attending here! We have started two new Sunday School Classes to provide opportunities of connecting to our young families and the other class for college students. At the same time I had another newcomer attend one of our long standing Sunday School classes and also expressed her appreciation of the depth of discussion and for the class to accept her as a participant. I hope each of you realizes how important you are in the Kingdom of God. Your love and acceptance of others as they take a chance and check us out is one of the greatest things that makes God smile! When Elsie Frye greets you with her warm smile and friendly hand shake, when Lisa Dadisman answers the church phone with a pleasant word, when Jud Bracey invites as all to connect with God through music, when each of you shares God’s love with each other, I know that all is right with the world! Let’s be a part of a March Madness that enters us into a Season of preparation as we participate in the Passion of Christ for all his children. Shalom, Pastor Jon

Kim Weaver, director of Weirton Christian Center will present our 2nd School of Missions on April 3rd at 5:30. The Weirton Christian Center continues to meet the needs of needy children in their after school program and their daily pre-school. In November they held a Silver Ring Thing for 212 youth. 71 chose to purchase the silver ring to show their commitment to abstinence until marriage. 56 young people gave their hearts to the Lord. We can support their ministry to children by collecting individually wrapped or packed snack items to be given to Kim Weaver when she comes on April 3rd.

Spring Cleaning Day The Board of Trustees is planning a Spring cleaning day for the church to be held on Saturday, April 2nd at 9am12:00noon. We need your assistance with this project so keep this day open for the church.

Meet Gary ―Flowers‖ Price
Imagine beginning to work at the age of sixteen and staying on the same job your whole life. That’s what Gary Price has done. While he was still in school, he became a flower man by working in the greenhouse at Thornhill’s. He stayed on after graduating from Philippi High School, went to floral design schools in Wheeling and Cleveland and Dayton, and that’s what he has done ever since—at Thornhill’s. Credit him with the lovely arrangements that appear in our church every Sunday. Gary is a life-long Philippian, born in the old Myers Hospital and attending local public schools. He remembers his favorite teachers—Lillian Crislip in first grade and Jane Mattaliano in high school. He’s the oldest of four siblings, his brother Rick now being minister of the Southern Baptist church in Saberton, his sister Kim an in-home patient caregiver in Elkins, and his brother Joe still living here in Philippi. Their father was a coal miner, their mother, Martha, a homemaker who later worked at Broaddus Hospital. Gary and his wife, Brenda, who has worked at Broaddus Hospital for over fifteen years, head a blended family of five children and seven grandchildren scattered from Elkins, Clarksburg, and Grafton, to Pittsburgh and beyond. He grins as he reports that the Brenda-Gary relationship as more than friendly neighbors began when he invited her to go for a walk with him. ―Our first date,‖ he says, ―was on the 4th of July—we went to see the fireworks at the fairgrounds.‖ Everyone who knows them agrees—Gary made a good investment. ―I’m a third-generation Baptist—at least,‖ he nods. ―I’m not sure about my greatgrandparents, but grandparents and parents? Baptist all the way.‖ He lives his commitment, having served PBC as a Sunday School teacher and now superintendent. He has also been a member of the Diaconate and the Worship Committee and the Board of Church Growth. ―And probably a few others,‖ he smiles. ―I grew up in this church and was baptized by Dick Hepler when I was 18. I can’t imagine ever not being a part of this congregation. It’s my extended family, with me every time I have ever needed anything.‖ As for the future—―I just pray,‖ Gary says, ―that we continue to grow, particularly in terms of children and young couples. This church means everything to me.‖
