It is time for greater action toward improving social media.This report,

Social Media: The People, Organizations and Ideas for a Better Tech Future
 is directed at policymakers and social media platformswith the express purpose of creating a more holistic, collective approachto improving social media. It also foregrounds the diverse ecosystem thataffects and is affected by social media and aims to promote a culture ofknowledge-sharing and collaboration that is necessary for this proactiveapproach.We fully recognize the complexity of improving social media and how itinteracts with economic, social, and historical influences. That is preciselywhy the team that developed this report includes a diverse group of 100individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives. Thisreport also includes more than forty interviews representing an expansiverange of experts from industry, academia, policy, research, startups,advocacy organizations, and other thought leaders. The aim of this report is to create a more comprehensive, proactiveapproach that addresses the complex sociotechnical issues related tosocial media. We know that there is a
problem
 with the state of social media and how itaffects our civil liberties, wellbeing, and information ecosystem. Solvingthese problems will require a far more thorough approach thatdemonstrates cross-sector understanding of the interlocking roles ofplatforms, users, policymakers, tech workers, news media, advertisers,funders, and the Knowledge Base that informs the full ecosystem. Social media dramatically impacts our future. This report will help us movetoward co-creating a tech future that we want to live in.
