The subject of the REMNANT represents salvation of some in the midst of judgment. There was a remnant in Israel that was saved, and the rest were blinded and judged. We have heard teaching on the remnant of Israel, but very little on the remnant of Edom. The Edomites were the descendants of Esau, and they were perpetual enemies of Israel. They are a picture of the HEATHEN, and Obadiah’s prophecy is a judgment against for their hatred and mistreatment of Israel. The Day of the LORD would come upon EDOM. Obadiah15-21 For the DAY of the LORD is near upon all the HEATHEN: as thou hast
done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been. But upon mount Zion shall be DELIVERANCE, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it. And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south. And saviours shall come up on MOUNT ZION to judge the mount of Esau; and the KINGDOM shall be the LORD's.

Obadiah’s prophecy is related to Joel’s prophecy of judgment on the heathen in the valley of Jehoshaphat. (see note on the Kingdom in Joel) Joel 3:12-16
Let the HEATHEN be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

The KINGDOM would come when the Lord judged EDOM (the Heathen). In the midst of this judgment would be salvation. This salvation would be in Zion. The heathen would be judged, but the remnant (of Edom) would be saved. Heathen is Hebrew word gowy meaning a nation, people, usually of nonHebrew people, of descendants of Abraham, of Israel, of swarm of locusts, other animals (fig.)
The heathen consisted of Pontius Pilate, Herod, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel who opposed the kingdom (Acts 4:21-27).

Edom is also a picture of the heathen, and those who oppose God’s covenant people. In the context of the 1st Century, God’s covenant people were the church (New Covenant people). Amos predicted the salvation of the REMNANT OF EDOM.

Amos 9:11-12 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up
the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: That they may possess the REMNANT of EDOM, and of all the HEATHEN, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

This is fulfilled with the coming in of the Gentiles into the church. Acts 15:14-17 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of
them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. The remnant of Edom would join the remnant of Israel in Zion (the Church). This was the coming of the Gentiles into the church. The hostility between Jew and Gentile represented by Edom would be broken through the cross. Jesus would bring PEACE.

Salvation came to the remnant of Edom (the heathen), and judgment also came to the heathen. The salvation came to those who called upon the name of the Lord. Zion is the place of salvation. This is a key to understanding the Kingdom. Salvation came in the midst of judgment. The kingdom was established with justice and judgment (Isa.9:7), and salvation was established from generation to generation. Savior (Deliverers) came up on Mount Zion. I like Gill’s commentary on these verses. And saviours shall come upon Mount Zion,.... Which according to some, is to be understood literally, either of Zerubbabel and Joshua, after the return of the Jews from the Babylonish captivity, who were the restorers of, their civil and church state; or rather of Judas Maccabeus and his brethren, who saved the people of the Jews from Antiochus and his generals, called "saviours", as the judges of old were, Nehemiah 9:27; but it is best to interpret these saviours of the apostles of Christ, and ministers of the word; and especially of the

preachers of the Gospel in the latter days; called "saviours", because they publish salvation, preach the Gospel of it, show unto men the way of salvation; and so they, and the word preached by them, are the means and instruments of the salvation of men; otherwise Christ is the only Saviour of God's appointing and sending; and who came to effect salvation, and is become the author of it, nor is it in any others Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible
