Dear Elementary School Parents,

Last Friday we had our annual ES Sports Day, and it was a great success! A big thank you to our ES PE team led by Amanda Pekin for putting together such a great event. Thank you also to all of our great ES parents. We had a record turnout of parent support, and your children appreciated all of the cheers coming from the stands at the opening ceremony and throughout the day!

Our next important day is Tuesday, March 15 with Student Led Conferences. Next Wednesday, your child will be bringing a letter home explaining the purpose of our student led conferences and the format of the afternoon. Please take special note that there will be early dismissal at 12:00 noon on this day.

We hope everyone has a great long weekend!

Yours in Education,

Simon Gillespie

Dear Parents

Thank-you to the many parents that joined us on Sports Day last Friday. Your presence and your willingness to either participate or assist was greatly appreciated. Thank-you to our official parent photographers on the day: Mary Lim-Lopez, Paul Denver, Marjan Paas, Frances Capua, Wendy Worley and Tess Haynie. If parents have photos they would like to share with the classes or the PE department then please contact your classroom teacher. We also welcome constructive feedback from the day and ask that you take the time to e-mail us (pekina@ismanila.org) or comment through the PE teachers blogs. We use the feedback from parents, students and teachers each year to make improvements and value your input at this time.

Sports Day reminds us that physical activity

provides opportunities for social interaction, self expression, health, challenge and enjoyment. The importance of sportsmanship

will continue in all activities we do in physical education. Sportsmanship allows us to play

competitively and

still

enjoy

being

active

whether we win or lose. Sports day reminds us as parents just how much fun it can be to be active at any age! I hope you all find time each week to be active with your child.

Dear Parents

The ES Learning Support Blog is designed to provide parents with information on the school’s LS Team but also on the other services offered at school (Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy) as well as information on different learning needs and links to relevant websites and resources.

Added this week is a section on apps for iPads, iTouches and iPhones that are great for all young learners. You will also find posts on giving praise, setting behavioral goals,

organization skills

and

difficulties.

Dear Parents,

A regular reminder – please check that your child’s vaccinations are up-to-date. This is the first line of defense against a number of serious diseases and I encourage you to visit your pediatrician if you feel that your child may be due for any vaccinations.

The following link will give you access to current US vaccination schedules which may be used a guide. Most countries have similar schedules and advocate a similar regime. If in doubt, please visit your pediatrician or ask at the school clinic for contact details if you do not already have a pediatrician.

Dengue – A Gentle Reminder

Please be aware that dengue does not disappear altogether during the drier months, although it is more common during the wet season there are still a number of cases reported every month. There is still a need to be vigilant and try to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes by:

using mosquito

repellent, destroying any possible

mosquito breeding areas at home, wearing long sleeves/

trousers and closing mosquito nets and outside doors.

IASAS SWIMMING

The ISM Swim team achieved very encouraging results at the IASAS Swimming Championships last week in Kuala Lumpur. It is the first time for many years that both our teams did not finish 6th, our boys finished 4th and our girls were leading JIS right up to the final event. A huge improvement from previous years and our freshman swimmers, now have the experience and are hungry for success next year, in fact they are already back in the pool training for next years IASAS at Jakarta International School.

Boys finished 4th, Girls finished a very close 6th with

JIS beating them to 5th in the last event.
