Open-source “Place Making”

.......................................................................................................................................................................
In his essay OPEN SOURCE “PLACE MAKING”, David Barrie talks about “a collective approach to the
development of cities in an age of big society, digital media and social enterprise”. He suggests that
there is a growing appetite in industrialized countries for enterprises that merge profit-making with
morality, and a dramatic rise in the use of digital online technology for social networking. He thinks these
two trends recommend a new emphasis in urban policy and urban planning towards embracing ‘citizen
demand’, aggregating and using it to make places that unfold over time, through programs requiring
low-cost capital investment. He also suggests that there is a positive value in taking a more interactive
approach to the design and development of our cities, one geared to multiple groups, relationships,
entrepreneurial networks and modular use of sites. He calls this “open source place making”.
We understand that the ONETHOUSANDSQUARE project entered for this competition is strongly
committed with those values, bringing together different agents to get involved in a process of
thinking/designing/acting an Open Source Hamar place making, connecting digital and physical
workspace, which will lead to the design of Stortoget Square, the main square of the city of Hamar.
Digital and physical, local and worldwide, all the resources are needed to make this project successful
and experimental. Our aim is to create a place, not a design.
Through this process we will create and reinforce the Hamar social network and a creative attitude from
the citizenship. The social impact goes beyond the physical square design and the 20-month-process
period. We believe the local community has a word to say and the power to act and become part of an
active process. At the end, everybody involved will have an experience, a memory, and certainly
something to tell.
To review and complete this creative experience the Global LAB Team will proceed to translate all the
information into a real collaborative design for the square, which will be the first MAINSQUARE designed
with 21st Century tools by an open-source collaborative experience in the entire world.

Brief

What you’ll find in this proposal review
.......................................................................................................................................................................
After the opportunity you gave us to make the presentation of the ONETHOUSANDSQUARE project in
Hamar last December and adding the new information about different aspects we have been generating
since then, here is a synthesis of the main decisions we have made in order to further develop the
proposal:
01 The Physical Lab has to be placed in an available and existing space in order to avoid too long a
bureaucratic process that could consume too much time from the project. For that reason we have
studied two possibilities:
a) Using the vacant Bike shop space at the Basarbygningen building as our first option.
b) Designing and building a customized Info-Box near the building site at Stortoget square as an
information and working space, with the possibility to hire other meeting rooms available in Hamar for
larger meetings. Both options can be solved quickly consuming a reasonable amount of time and
budget.
02 We have reviewed the calendar of activities in order to comply with the planning schedule for the
construction of the new Cultural House. This new calendar is designed to have both processes ending
at the same time. This means that the final square will be totally implemented after an experimental,
interesting and fruitful process; coinciding with the opening to the public of the new Culture House. The
calendar establishes the distribution of the different activities throughout the 20 months available. This
project as a process will enrich Hamar social and cultural life with positive and unexpected
consequences that go beyond the project itself.
03 As proof of our commitment with the management of the process, GLT will send one of its best
urban social designers to be the Director of the Local Lab Team. This means that there will be an
ecosistema urbano professional person based in Hamar for the whole process, to manage every detail
of the project with the absolute commitment of reaching excellence.
04 Working on this further development of the project we have come to the conclusion that the ideas,
outputs and results of this process should be incorporated into the design of the square itself. For that
reason at the end of the 20-month-long process we will provide a design document

ONETHOUSANDSQUARE

8

(ONETHOUSANDSQUARE DESIGN – PHASE 1) that will synthesize the conclusions of the previous
experimental period.
05 We have started establishing contacts with creative personalities and teams from different
backgrounds and countries to let them know about the project and the multiple possibilities for
cooperation that could arise from it. We enclose some of the letters expressing interest from some of
those who have confirmed their interest, support and availability if this project becomes the winning
proposal.
06 You will also find in this document:
- a full schedule of the activities, events and workshops
- a detailed budget assigning specific amounts for the different tasks, actions and expenses.
- a new video trying to explain the proposal from a didactic point of view.
- a list of possible and exciting spin offs arising from the project.
- a detailed description of every action in the proposal.

Ideas incubator
.......................................................................................................................................................................
To make possible the creation of mock ups, the ideas incubator workshops will take place previously
with the collaboration of many people, residents from Hamar and surroundings, as well as the wide net
of the “on line workshopers”.
Therefore, we can distinguish between two groups of workshop, both very important to the success of
the project:
Ideas incubator- Hamar citizen workshops: These type of workshops are aimed to make the most of
the inhabitants of the city, using the immense potential they have to bring new and fresh ideas to
improve their square and their city. Hamar citizens are people who experience in first person the day to
day life. They, better than anyone, know what it takes to revitalize a place that is bound to be a staging
area, to be degraded by the mere fact of non-use, or at least lack of attractive use.
From any field of study, profession or interests, from 0 to 99 years old, everybody is invited to raise their
voice and use their opportunity to change Hamar urban life.
These workshops will focus on different work dynamics that encourage brainstorming through various
methods as sensory recognition, hand-on sessions, “S” size mock up setting up, etc…
Ideas incubator- On line workshops: These other type of workshops will take place on line, and
therefore, the scope of work and the diversity of ideas coming from such a wide range of people,
students, professionals, other cities inhabitants and anyone interested in creativity or any other tangents
of contemporary culture, will provide a broad data base of ideas and projects. This remote working
system has got the advantage to give solutions related to other similar situations, but without the inner
point of view from Hamar.
The on line workshops will be leaded and monitoring by the Global Lab Team (GLT), who will process
the ideas and the information to update the Digital Lab.

.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
As a conversational process, the World Café is an innovative yet simple methodology for hosting
conversations about questions that matter. These conversations link and build on each other as people
move between groups, cross-pollinate ideas, and discover new insights into the questions or issues that
are most important in their life or community. As a process, the World Café can evoke and make visible
the collective intelligence of any group, thus increasing people’s capacity for effective action in pursuit
of common aims.
The integrated design principles have been distilled over the years as a guide to intentionally harnessing
the power of conversation for business and social value. When used in combination, they provide useful
guidance for anyone seeking creative ways to foster authentic dialogue in which the goal is thinking
together and creating actionable knowledge.

.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Briefing workshops are simple, easy-to-organise working sessions held to establish a project agenda or
brief. Simultaneously they can introduce people to the project, get people involved and motivated,
identify useful talent and experience for the Promoter Group, identify the next steps needed and help
establish the key issues.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
1. Introduction: Purpose of event explained by facilitator. Everyone introduces themselves.
2. Individual brainstorm: Everyone is given Post-it notes of 3 different colours and asked to write down
their responses to 3 questions: What is wrong in the square? / What is your desire for the square? / How
can it happen?
3. Categorizing: People divide into three sub-groups. Each sub-group categorizes Post-its of one colour
by arranging them on large sheets of paper and making headings.
4. Presenting: Each sub-group explains its findings to the whole group.
5. Discussion: On the results and next stage in the process. Strategic advice and immediate action

Ideas factory: Case Study
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
It’s a working session with the objective of raising awareness and finding realistic and concrete
solutions to a problem. It’s a group study of an idea chosen from the Digital Lab. It serves to foster
people’s critical capacity, getting their participation in a respectful manner, giving their ideas and
listening to others. Therefore, the goal is not to reach a single solution or unanimity, but the interaction
and dialogue established in the group.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
1. Election of the idea: The LLT choose an idea which came from the Digital Lab (the ideas that people
has proposed on the digital tools). The idea will be appropriate to the type of participants to arouse their
interest.
2. Presentation: Thee manager presents the idea briefly and returned the questionnaire with which the
participants will analyze the problem and focus the topic and discussion.

Creativity workshops: Art Workshops
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Art workshops allow local people to help design and construct artworks to improve their environment.
Ideas are generated by them (in this case by children), working closely with community artists and
sculptors in studio workshop sessions. The community chooses which of the design options generated
should be built. The artworks are manufactured and installed, with the assistance of local residents: this
will be a MOCK UP
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
It is divided in two phases which are two workshops itself:
1º DESIGN WORKSHOP: School children work with artists developing designs for a mosaic using
poster paints, cardboard, scissors, plasticine...They are directed in several topics like: What if the
square were a playground? / What if the square were my favorite holiday's place? / What if the square
were from the future? At the end, it can be possible to make a micro mock up based on the children’s
ideas.
2º MOCK UP SETTING UP WORKSHOP: The mockup is made by local people with no previous
experience under the supervision of artists and architects. These mock ups are based on the ideas from
the designing step (those from the children)
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHO?
Participants: Children and people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities Different workshops for different

Creativity workshops: Design Game
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Design games are like jigsaw puzzles. There is a base map of the square. Cut-out pieces representing
items that could be incorporated are made to the same scale. Materials for making pieces are kept at
hand to allow new items to be made as desired. Individuals or groups move pieces around until they are
happy with the design, which is then photographed.
They are a highly visual way of allowing people to explore physical design options for a site or internal
space. They are particularly useful for designing parks and for land-use planning.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
Layouts produced by different individuals or groups are discussed and analyzed as a basis for drawing
up sketch designs and costing.
It can be something permanent in the Physical Lab for people can interact always with it or it can be
managed like a workshop were people decide and make the pieces of the layout.

Sensory integration
.......................................................................................................................................................................
Topophilia's Wor(l)d. The term “topophilia” was coined by the geographer Yi-Fu Tuan of the University
of Wisconsin and is defined as the affective bond with one's environment, a person's mental, emotional,
and cognitive ties to a place. Topophilia creates emotional links between us and the space we daily use.
The surveyed environmental features map a four domains structure which define topophilia: ecodiversity
(the presence of flowers, water, and other elements of nature), synthesization (a commingling of colours,
smells, and other sensory stimuli), environmental familiarity (which includes spaciousness and privacy),
and cognitive challenge (which includes structural complexity and texture).
The Sensory Integration's final objective is to stimulate sense relations between place and people we
are going to work with.

Sensory integration: Spatial Recognition
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Sensory Recognition allows local people to perceive surrounding and local space as the place they have
the relation with and improve it. This will be particularly useful for helping people to internalize and
express their spatial senses, improving community identity about urban space.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
Bringing people together into a spatial exploration exercise at Hamar's square, which also provides
sensory and physical examination of the space around the square. Participants will appropriate the
square doing relax exercises while rethinking about new uses. A suitable audible and thermal
atmosphere will help thoughts flowing. Some mats and time to relax, and it is done.

Sensory integration: Blind Space
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Blind Space, as another activity about Sensory Integration, will help people recognize and appreciate a
place depriving them of the sense of sight. Blindfolded people will experience space by making use of it,
so that the other senses are heightened and will provide new information previously unnoticed. This will
be particularly useful for people to establish different emotional connections with their own space, trying
to improve the topophilia's process.
Step 1: Participants will appropiate the raw space, recognizing the square as it is. They will
establish direct contact with the square and its materiality recognizing it, walking, hearing, smelling...
Step 2: Thereafter, some kind of objects like plants, water or furniture, may appear on the scene
and change people's reaction. Whether walking, running over, approaching objects, their behavior will
be will be key to reconsider any aspects of the square. Participants will be invited to translate these
feelings and experiences into valuable data. The aim is to analyze the square configuration from a new
point of view that can help to improve its daily life it in many different aspects.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
Blindfolded people will experiment the square and its space using and maximizing their other senses.
The square will become a board game to be alert to everything around. Participants will learn through
their senses getting into another dimension of relation with themselves and the space they daily use.

Sensory integration: Your square, your home
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
The workshop "Your square, your home" is designed to bring in the urban space into the individual
private life. On the other hand, this private world will also open to urban space dynamics.
The square is a blank sheet which will become into whatever people want. These new uses, both
private and public will bring people together, and create close bonds of trust that will enhance
communication at decisions-making processes.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
Through encouraging people to bring daily use objects, furniture, or activities like cooking, reading,
taking a nap, watering plants, etc… a new home-made square will appear. Participants will, somehow,
decontextualise their common lives, as a reflection exercise to discover a domestic square.
.......................................................................................................................................................................

Ideas Data Bank: Photo Tour
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Photo Tours help groups develop design ideas by taking and discussing photos of their existing
environment. They can be used as part of a wider community profiling or action planning event or as an
independent exercise.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
Participants go around their neighbourhood individually or in teams, taking photos of places and images
according to a general or specific theme. After processing, the photos are sorted, selected and placed
on large sheets of blank paper or maps. Photos can be grouped or cut up and comments may be added
using Post-its or felt tips. The completed sheets or maps are used as a basis for discussion, analysis
and design.

Ideas Data Bank: Giant Exhibition Panel
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
A giant exhibition panel located in Hamar's square may be used by local residents to give their opinion,
and every suggestion or complain they could have. This way, citizens join in a debate on the future of
the square by sketching their own ideas and holding discussions with the organisers. Through this ideapanel, participants may express whatever they wish about community planning, dynamics (activities,
mock-up) and implementation. For the GLT it is a data bank plenty of information to supply the process.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
By writing on Post-it notes, sticking or drawing every idea, the panel will offer a permanent tool for free
expression to local people. Through it, they may express whatever they want about community
planning, dynamics (activities, mock-up) and implementation. The results will be used to prepare a
scheme for possible mock ups.

Ideas Data Bank: Mobile Unit Collection
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Mobile units can make it easier to provide the technical support necessary for community planning
activity. They are particularly useful for working in communities lacking facilities or where a series of
similar events are planned in several locations. Can also create a sense of presence and credibility as
well as being a useful technical resource.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
Mobile units can range from a van used to transport an exhibition to a mobile home or trailer converted
into a fully equipped design studio. The units are fitted out with facilities and equipment necessary for
the activities planned. This vehicle will drive around different neigbourhoods searching for ideas and
suggestions upcoming from surrounding residents far from the key place, Hamar's square.

Ideas Data Bank: Elevation montage
.......................................................................................................................................................................
WHAT?
Elevation montages show the facade of the square by assembling photos of individual buildings. They
can be useful for helping people gain an understanding of the building fabric and devise improvements.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
HOW?
The elevation of the square will be created by assembling a series of individual photographs. All sides of
the square can be done and pasted over a plan. Simple instructions ask people to make comments on
Post-it notes or cards and place them underneath the relevant section (what they like/don't like/would
like to see). The build up of Post-it notes or cards generates a dialogue amongst participants and useful
data for later discussion and analysis.

Working dynamics
From idea to mock up
.......................................................................................................................................................................
This project has the ability to allow in any kind of ideas using different channels. All collected ideas and
suggestions form a data base.
-A professional Advisory Board will filter this data base by mixing, transforming and classifying the
existing ideas providing a new set of ideas.
Online and onsite workshops will work from these premises using them as a starting point for the design
of the mock ups. The different scale mock ups will be implemented with the technical support of the
different responsible people of each mock up as indicated in the descriptions.
This process is designed dividing the ‘ideas people’ from the ‘doing people’. This way people whose
task is thinking, can feel free enough to dream about the square without restrictions. Those whose main
task is designing and materializing the ideas have the experience, creativity and ability to make the
ideas come true. They have the power to do it!!

From review to ONETHOUSANDSQUARE
design
.......................................................................................................................................................................
After the whole mock up process is over, there is a final Mock Up review linked to a Final Mock Up
design.
The different agents who have taken part into this process up to that point will be gathered to review,
think about the whole process. Some conclusions will be extracted.
The GLT will start working with this material and will design the MOCK UP- XL, leading a workshop and
an event linked to that.
Out commitment with the ONETHOUSANDSQUARE will end with the submittal of a preliminary design
for Stortoget Main Square. This preliminary design will consider and sum up all the conclusions and
experiences that have occurred during the whole 20 month experience.

From ONETHOUSANDSQUARE design to
Stortoget square construction
.......................................................................................................................................................................
At this stage the commision linked to the competition Art in the Main square will be concluded with
great results. From that point the GLT directed by ecosistema urbano, and because of their architectural
background will be ready and able to follow up with the design process in order to make a final urban
design and construction supervision if the Kommune is interested.

How to start participation empowerment
.......................................................................................................................................................................
Starting such a project of collaborative design process without having a clear strategy of how engaging
people could be a non-sense.
We have 3 clear strategies:
1-To complete all the teams that we need to achieve this project, we have decided to create a Citizen
Representative Group. These individuals are selected by the LLT Social Researcher, as citizen
representatives. They are linked to the different associations, collectives or groups that are present in
the everyday life of Hamar. They will meet regularly with the LLT (Coordination Workshops) to
coordinate the activities and to make decisions about the programmed events. They have the
opportunity to comment and offer their feedback, which will help to direct decision-making.
2- If we want to think big, start small. The first activity will be an opening event where we will give
something to do collectively to the assistants so they can start feeling confident and start acting
creatively. It is important to transmit the idea that ‘everything is possible; you just have to start now’.
This new attitude of being proactive and creative towards the public space should stay and grow all
throughout the process, from the starting point (opening party) to the very end (closing party). For this
purposes we will apply existent methodologies applied in collective creative sessions.
3- The first package of activities will be managed entirely by outsiders. At this stage citizens will be
encouraged to participate, however their participation is not crucial. The participation interest will be
growing all through the process, when citizens start to realize that interesting things are happening in
their home town and they can have a word on them. By the end of the 20 month period activities are
planned to be accomplished mainly by locals and just partially by outsiders.
We expect the participation to be progressive. All the workshops, mock up construction and all
participative actions have an underlying effect and aim of creating community and improving the social
networks.

Placemaking
Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Put
simply, it involves looking at, listening to, and asking questions of the people who live, work and play in
a particular space, to discover their needs and aspirations. This information is then used to create a
common vision for that place. The vision can evolve quickly into an implementation strategy, beginning
with small-scale, do-able improvements that can immediately bring benefits to public spaces and the
people who use them.

Citizen empowerment
.......................................................................................................................................................................
ONETHOUSANDSQUARE can be defined as a “Place making” project.

As Lynda H. Schneekloth and Robert G. Shibley define in their book The Art and Practice of Building
Communities: ‘Placemaking is the way in which all human beings transform the places they find
themselves into the places where they live’. This project will encourage the members of the community to
become active place-makers co-working and contributing for a better Hamar public space.
ONETHOUSANDSQUARE will create a strong community network linking different sectors of the
population: seniors, children, professionals, adults, young people, creative people, international
visitors….committed with the future of their city.
ONETHOUSANDSQUARE will help explore and define new ways of working in public space.

Internet
.......................................................................................................................................................................
ONETHOUSANDSQUARE website will be designed as one of the main tools of this project. This will be
a dynamic website for creative people worldwide where an ideas data base will be available to be used
by anyone interested in public space renovation.
ONETHOUSANDSQUARE will improve and enlarge the reputation of Hamar on the internet and the
Google Search Ranking.
ONETHOUSANDSQUARE, and the city of Hamar, will be linked to tags such as innovation, creativity,
co-working, creative commons, open source, advocacy, community, place making, etc...

ONETHOUSANDSQUARE
