Michael is really enjoying his mission.
He loves Chile and the Chil- ean
people. On January 2, 2011,
a 7.1 earthquake shook
southern Chile. The people
were told to flee the coast
for higher ground amid
fears it could generate a
tsunami, like the one that
ravaged the area last year.
This is what Michael wrote
about it. “We were right
next to the beach when the
earthquake happened and
didn’t even think anything
of it. But we were doing
contacts on a hill when the
assistants called and told us
to get on a hill. That was
fun…”
When asked about investigators, this is
what Michael writes. “We have a lot of
investigators, we just have a lot of prob-
lems with the summer and work. Espe-
cially in Dichato because they all go
outside to work. And the work sched-
ules are all messed up. They work for
24 days straight, then get 8 days of rest.

church so a lot of baptismal dates have
fallen through.”
The biggest problem where Michael is
serving is how many inactive members
there are. He spends much of his time
working with these members. Michael

Jan 10 Things are starting to get better
here in Angachilla. Our investigator,
Yelica, is progressing. She
is starting to read and pray
every day, and she finally
found the desire to quit
smoking. Yesterday I
taught her about studying
the scriptures and the differ-
ence between reading and
studying. She seems to un-
derstand the importance of
studying the scriptures and
not just reading them. She
committed herself to study
the scriptures every day.
She does have one problem,
however. She has a problem
with waking up for church
in the morning. Last Sunday she didn’t
go to church because she was sleeping.
She slept through all three of her
alarms! She’s used to going to sleep at
2:00 a.m. So I gave her the challenge of
going to bed at 11:00 p.m. (at the latest).
This Sunday I think we are going to
have someone call her in the morning to
wake her up. I am open to suggestions
to help our investigators wake up early
to go to church at 9:00 a.m.
She is sure that she wants to get bap-
tized now and will have her interview
this Saturday. Yelica and her little sister,
Paula, are going to get baptized together.
We are finding a lot of good new investi-
gators. Some are family of members of
the church. We also have really good
new leaders in our ward. The Bishopric
is unbelievable! I’m excited to work
with them.

who is leaving, but more than likely it
will be Elder Pierson.

Jan. 24 We have been working really
hard to increase the effectiveness of our
area. We are changing things in our

everything so that we can work more

who are getting baptized are finally go-
ing to church, and now are getting bap-
tized on the 12th of Febuary. We had to
change their date because one of them
couldn’t really answer the baptismal
questions when we went over them with
her. But they are going to get baptized.
I’m learning to play the guitar. I’m
learning to play Primary songs!
Jan 31 I’m doing well down here in
Valdivia. Our investigators, Yelica and

Jan 10 Well this week has been wild! Hot-
lanta turned into a winter wonderland over
night. Last night at about 9:00 it just started
dumping snow here! We have at least six
inches of snow outside and people are sled-
ding down the road in front of our house. I
might try to find something to sled on and
go join them. I was like, ‘What the heck?!’
You don’t even know how bummed it
makes me to see the snow. I know I snow-
board and am supposed to like the snow,
but I am OVER IT.
It looks like I am being transferred. I got a
call from President last night and I will be
taking on a new assignment and will be
serving in Peachtree city. I am really excit-
ed and humbled by the calling. I am grate-
ful, though, for the trust the Lord has in me.
Jan 17 Wow this week has been out of
control for me! It is like things just all of a
sudden sped up tenfold for me and I am
going a hundred miles an hour in every di-
rection. I have so much respect for the El-
ders that served in this position before me.
The first part of the week we were snowed
into our apartment and couldn’t leave be-
cause no one would dare drive. We decided
to make the best of it, so we went sledding
down the hill in front of our house. It was a
great time! Then on Wednesday we had to
frantically try to find a ride and head to
Peachtree city. We went to the mission
home and spent the night with all the mis-
sionaries who were going home. It was real-
ly hard for me to see so many of the good
friends that I have made go home. This was
the first group of missionaries that I had
really gotten to know well that were going
home. We ended up staying up ‘til about
3:00 a.m. and then had to get up at 6:00 a.m.
to take them to the airport.
The next couple of days were filled with
trips back and forth to the airport picking
up new missionaries. The new missionaries
coming in had their flights canceled on
Tuesday earlier that week, so they were all
coming in at different times and it was just
wild. Not to mention this is the biggest
group of missionaries coming in that we
have had in the two years that the Satter-
fields have been the presidents. I felt like I
was going 500 miles an hour. President has
this saying that he tells missionaries to turn
their skis downhill and just follow him.
Well, I felt like he had let me loose on a
double black diamond and I was just cruis-
ing!
The first missionary we got came from Fiji
and barely spoke English. You can imagine
that, naturally, he got lost in the airport and
it was a joke trying to find him. After we
found him, we had a few hours before the

next group came
in, so we set up

and took the new

lesson. He had no
idea it was set up
and, oh my good-
ness, was it a
mess! He did
sooooo good, though. I am sure he was ter-
rified, but we gave him the part of introduc-
ing the Book of Mormon and baring testi-
mony. That little 5'4" man stood up and just
bore his testimony of the Book of Mormon
and it was soooo awesome! He is so great
and I just love him. I would have been so
terrified, but he just stood up like the little
warrior he is and bore his testimony.
When we told him it was all set up, he just
about died and we all had a really good
laugh. He was really confused at how this
guy got a baptismal date and everything set
up at that very first appointment.
I feel like I have a lot to learn from these
new missionaries. It was just so weird be-
ing the ones there picking them up because
I felt like I was just there being picked up.
Funny how fast time flies.
The rest of the week didn’t slow down one
bit. Between being in and out of countless
meetings all day long and trying to fit mis-
sionary work into our schedules, things
have been crazy. There was one point that I
was running on like 8 hours of sleep in 48
hours. But we got to go back and catch up
on sleep and now I am feeling good. I love
being busy; it makes the work sooo enjoy-
able. We are going to have an amazing
transfer. Despite all the craziness this week,
I have loved every minute of it.
Jan 24 This week I feel like I am starting
to catch up. For the last week and a half, I
have felt like I was
left in the dust and I
was always trying
to play catch up.
Things were just
going so fast and it
felt like my head
was just spinning
most of the time. I
feel like I am get-
ting a good idea of
how things work
and I am definitely
getting used to get-
ting up and speak-
ing in front of large
groups of people.

This week I have given two differ-
ent full day trainings–talk about
exhausting! And what even
makes it better is in the next two
weeks I will have given 12 more
trainings. Out of the 7 days this
week, we were only home 5 of
them. One of which was Sunday
and the other being P-Day. I have
felt like since I have been here
that I have been on one big road
trip that just never ends. We have
driven from one end of the mis-
sion and back several times now.
This is totally preparing me for
some good road trips when I am home.
As crazy as things have been though, I have
really loved it. And one thing that I have
learned as we get so wrapped up in doing
trainings and preparing trainings and being
on exchanges is that I really just cherish
those movements where I get to teach and
bear testimony to people of my beliefs. I
think I have taken for granted for much of
the time that I have been out that I get to
bear testimony every day that Christ lives
and that He is the Savior and Redeemer of
the world. It is funny how each time when I
get into a teaching appointment, my heart
races and I just get so nervous because I
know that this might be the last time I get
to teach for a few days or so. I love it,
though.
We had a great experience on exchanges
this week where we were totally and com-
pletely led to this guy. I went out with a
missionary named Elder Perkins who is
brand new. He had no idea what was going

the address of the house that we had an ap-
pointment at. Except we put in the wrong
address. We went to this house, knocked,
and this guy named Steven answered the
door and let us in. He was re-arranging
things, so it was a mess, but we just went to
work and started talking. He asked, “What
is it you guys do?” I didn’t think anything
of it–just started right in talking about it.

Elder Riley Landsaw
Jan 11 Let me start off with a really
funny story. Last night we were riding
down the road about 7:30 p.m. and we
see like eight Mexicans carrying a full
blown shed down the road. It’s like
three guys and five girls and the guys
are in the front and the girls in the back.
Well, they were struggling in the back,
way bad because it was a heavy shed.
So, naturally, my companion and I
threw our bikes down and ran to help
them carry it. Well, long story short, we
got it back to their house and they said
thanks and, as we were leaving, I real-
ized ...... They had stolen it! And we
had helped them carry it back to their
house!! Super funny!
This week has been a SUPER hard week
because I’m getting transferred tomor-
row. It has been the hardest thing in the
world to say good bye to my family
here. I won’t lie; it’s been a serious emo-
tional challenge for me. I really feel like
I have found another home here and I
don’t want leave. But tomorrow I’m off
to “Paradise Valley,” my new area.
Jan 18 Well, guess what?? I’m actually
not in Paradise Valley! I’m in Paradise
Valley zone in the mission, but I’m actu-
ally in Phoenix!! I’m in a little place
called ‘The Square.’ It’s like a square
mile of ghetto Mexicans. It’s amazing!
There are so many Hispanic people, I
don’t really know what to do! It’s been

Visit of Elder Neil L. Andersen
Elders Neil L. Andersen, Brent H. Niel-
son and Marama Tarati (Tahiti’s Area
Seventy) and their wives came to visit
Tahiti. Both Elder and Sister Andersen
spoke French, which was a treat for the
Saints here.
To honor them, the five stakes on the
island, as well as a group visiting from
New Caledonia to do temple work, pre-
sented a spectacular evening of Polyne-
sian dancing and music featuring the
youth. It’s impressive to see their rich
cultural tradition being passed on to the new generations.
The next morning at a stake conference, Elder Andersen invited all the children
and parents to come and shake his hand afterwards. He told the 400 people re-
ceiving the broadcast in another chapel that he would wait for them to come if
they wanted to. His visit reminded us of the Savior’s early apostles who were
sent out to bless the people. It is truly a privilege to have living apostles walking
and ministering among us.

Something sparked his interest and he asked
us to sit down tell him more. We asked to
have a prayer first. Elder Perkins said the
prayer and prays for the man we intended on
seeing named Sid. After the prayer, Steven is
like “Wait. What did you say my name was?”
E. Perkins says, “Sid.” Steven says, “Whoa,
whoa, whoa. I’m Steven.” Come to find out,
we were not at Sid’s house and this is just
some random guy that let us into his house.
Wee ended up teaching him about the plan of
salvation and I think he is really interested. It
was a great experience and a huge testimony
to me that this truly is God’s work and we
are just his tools for accomplishing it.
I am grateful for a God that knows better
than I, because if I had to rely on my stren-
gth and knowledge, I would mess everything
up. It was a great week and I truly cherish
those moments of baring my testimony be-
cause I know that, as a missionary, they are
numbered.
