CHOICES, CHOICES, CHOICES, OH SO MANY CHOICES!
If you are a college applicant, you know what we mean about feeling relieved when you push that last submit button or when you mail the last envelope of required documents. Well, we’re sorry to break it to you, but there’s still a long way to go! As you start receiving responses from colleges to which you applied, you will need to make decisions and provide all the other required documents (health, insurance, housing forms, just to name a few). The acceptance or waitlist letter is only the beginning! After all the excitement of receiving a ‘yes’ from the schools to which you applied, it’s time to reflect and, if you were lucky to receive more than one acceptance letter, decide where you will spend the next few years of your life. Our advice to you is: don’t rush into a decision. Think over all the reasons why you applied to that school in the first place and weigh the pros and cons of each institution. Admissions counselors understand that this is a big step, so feel free to negotiate with them a deadline for giving your final answer. If your acceptance letter is not a ‘yes’ but a ‘maybe’ in the form of a waitlist, don’t fret! According to a report from the National Association for College Admission Counseling, colleges accepted 34 percent of students who chose to remain on waiting lists. There’s not much you can do but inform the admissions counselor of your interest, negotiate deadlines with other schools, sit back, and wait. Now, if you received a rejection letter, it is not the end of the world. Perhaps that school or program wasn’t the right “fit” for you anyway. No matter what the decision was, we recommend you write a thank you e-mail to all the colleges.
