Above on the right we have an image of the well-known “Thinker” by August Rodin. To the left we have a representation of a Neanderthal who is said, theoretically, and according to DNA studies to have given modern man a larger brain. Well now, at the risk of offending some people it does seem to me that if Rodin’s man is thinking at all and, certainly, he has his mind on something and, with little effort, we might understand what that might be. Our Neanderthal man who is said to have given us a prideful inheritance, as pictured here, gives evidence of having a sense of humor which is, in fact, one of the characteristics of a creative mind at work.

Off and on I have had contact with a variety of business people. While there are, of course, distinguishable differences between and among them they all seem to have at least lone characteristic in common and, I think, that might be described as an attitude of optimistic cheerfulness, at least when they are in the presence of prospective client. It is odd, in a way, that somehow 82% percent of the time it may be possible to tell what occupation a person has by the way he dresses, talks, relates to others and moves through the world. For example, at a table over there in the corner hunched over their cold cups of coffee, smoking cigarettes, concentrating their attention on the obscenities carved into the table top are painters. Well, you can be pretty sure of that since one has a torn pocket out of which is poking a palette knife. On the other side of the room, speaking in much louder tones and gesturing and slicing the air, occupying three times as much space as they need to are dancers from the ballet who raise their chins in graceful arches and lower their eyelids disdainfully. Up by the window overlooking the traffic are three in business suits,., jackets buttoned, handkerchiefs with the three points just merging from the breast pocket, left hand on one leg, elbow bent, the other elbow on the table, wrist at an angle emphasizing a point and all have raised eyebrows indicative of cynical appraisal.

Such stereotypes do carry messages, theatrically type-cast as they are we immediately recognize who these characters are supposed to be. All these hypothetical people, were they real, would, I believe, be missing the point of being who they really are and within their fields not contributing the input expected of a creative mind. Being easily recognized as a type may be personally satisfying if one’s ego is in need of such reassurance, but the really creative contributor may be very different from the stereotype.

• The average adult thinks of 3-6 alternatives for any given situation. • The average child thinks of 60. • Research has shown that in creativity quantity equals quality. • The longer the list of ideas, the higher the quality the final solution. The highest quality ideas appear at the end of the list. • Creativity is an individual process. Traditional brainstorming has been proven ineffective because of fear of social disapproval. • Groups are best for idea selection rather than idea generation. These are all molds of types and as Sean Watson has pointed out so vividly and, I believe, correctly, in his essay: “Policing The Affective Society” the process of profiling individuals can be a process where many valuable nuances are obliterated and in a world

that may be moving, whether it wants to or not, into one that can correctly and actively identified as “pluralistic” maintaining amicable relationships may require a finer tuning. Certainly, a more intensively humane education is desirable. The attitude of a more elastic social reaction system where types others than ourselves are tolerated up to the point where their behaviors do not interfere with the rights of others and these, themselves, are elastic as they exist from situation to situation. One of the more immediately required business decisions I consider essential, and life-saving, is the position that if a business has something it believes is valuable for others and is offering it for their consumption the business should be willing to point out the ways in which the offering can help them. In order to do that effectively, however, the business should be willing to listen to the client as the client expresses his needs and to work with the client as he makes the adjustment. Were I to type cast Rodin’s “Thinker” and the Neaderthal for these roles, I would take the Neaderthal because he evidences an interest in relating to me. The “Thinker” is much too withdrawn to be of any help. In bringing these concerns to the attention of a very highly active thinker I received the following responses from him on what he thought might be typical of the “typical” business man. Here they are:

The "Good" Businessperson: - Cost of purchase ($) - Cost of use (Time required to take the 'test' per person) - Cost of evaluation, by whom is evaluation done, and how long to receive the results thereof - Businessman must see a typical sample evaluation, know the steps he must take to optimally use them, and at what cost in time - Should non-creatives be replaced with creatives over time, as low producing milk cows are culled from a dairy herd - What typical percent improvement in efficiency has been experienced by companies who have been TCP'd - List some Companies where the TCP has been applied with success, complete with contact names and phone numbers/email addresses The "Evil" Businessperson may also want to know from the Evaluation Report: What he gain personal knowledge about each Testee? Will he know if the Testee has somehow 'cheated' in the test? Will personality traits be revealed to him, and in what categories?

Will evaluation results give him tools to Control and Motivate Testee, and Predict problem behaviour?
Your response has, however, given me , I think, some valuable insight into the effective differences between these types. Had these responses been delivered to me personally in some business man’s office after my presentation I do think it would have taken all my resolve to deal with the nasty s.o.b. philistine who has in all subjectively justified conceit announced his superiority in intellectual anaylsis over any other analysis I cannot help but parallel this to what seems to have been Rumsfeld’s behavior. My natural inclination would have been to walk out of the room without a word. In fact, something like that I did with one George Galea of the ISP who arranged for an interview with me over what was necessary for his ISP and me to work together. He allowed me to hear, or he wanted me to hear, his comment to a subordinate that my meeting was taking :”much longer than [ he] had wanted”. At the time I said nothing for I had been brought there by someone who had been very thoughtful and I did not want to embarrass him. Later, I told Galea off and how very inappropriate, rude and insulting his comments were and that if I were to do business with him his attitude would have to change drastically. It did! I can thank you for the insight …awesome as it was .

In general these answers would differ from place to place and would come out of the analysis from THAT particular group - Should non-creatives be replaced with creatives over time, as low producing milk cows are culled from a dairy herd Not necessarily, for often a creative type, while stimulated by other creative types may have his creative energies drained off from a focus on a problem through having “enjoyed” the interaction with another creative. Probably some alternation would be necessary, BUT, what I perceive as being essential is that the creative person is NOT treated like a milsch cow, and that there is some understanding that creative notions are very much like tender plants requiring certain things at certain times, One doesn’t clock in and then clock out. - What typical percent improvement in efficiency has been experienced by companies who have been TCP'd There haven’t been any companies yet. And “efficiency” may not be the point, but MIGHT be. One of the characteristics of a creative person is that he loves to elaborate…and the process of elaboration

is not often equateable to efficiency, but is very productive with ideas….ON THE OTHER HAND the creative person often gets fed up with ritual and will definitely “cut to the point”. This action often irritates the hell out of the uncreative, ass-kissing majority who prefer the subservient behavior over the independence of action. which is VERY MUCH preferred by the creative person. The creative person isn’t a groupie. - List some Companies where the TCP has been applied with success, complete with contact names and phone numbers/email addresses The "Evil" Businessperson may also want to know from the Evaluation Report: What he gain personal knowledge about each Testee?”personal” like what I wonder? There is much that can be learned from the responses to these tasks that do relate to creativity levels, but revealing them to an employer would be similar to breaking the rules of the confessional. I wouldn’t even talk to the individual about it without first establishing a secure relationship and NEVER to a third person…not even a spouse and probably not a parent of an individual older than 10 or 12 years. But yes, the information is there. Will he know if the Testee has somehow 'cheated' in the test? There is NO Way to effectively cheat. To cheat for a higher grade is NOT possible. Cheating is self-punishing. The teachers at the Maltese school thought they would enhance their own reputations as teachers by telling the students what they (the teachers) thought were the “correct” responses. The only result was that they damaged, severely, their students’ placement on those tasks. The Maltese society is a society of “authority” and the rulers rule by intimidation, more so here than in any other place I have known. Will personality traits be revealed to him, only in general and in what categories? Will evaluation results give him tools to Control and Motivate Testee, and Predict problem Attempting to “control” the behavior of a creative person if one is, himself, uncreative is ASKING for trouble. The creative person is NOT amenable to control. One may REWARD creative behaviour when it appears [if one is fortunate enough to recognize it]?and if one wishes to “control” “Problem behavior” one will create a situation where the natural instincts of a creative mind are NOT frustrated by the control expectations of an “administrative-type” personality. This is discussed in greater detail on my website on the education section as a result of Henrickson and Torrance research.
What I have found in my research is that there are statistical differences between what may be defined as “creative” and “noncreative” and that those judged “creative” not only consistently achieve a grade-point average a full grade-point lower than those not

judged “creative” but that those not judged creative tell more lies designed to present themselves as conventional subjects and supportive of societal norms whereas those judged “creative” are indifferent to those concerns. In any field of endeavor only an honest approach to the materials at hand can achieve a creative result. The systematic downgrading of the creatively honest person is what concerns me and in the case cited above the official practice made it effectively impossible for the creative thinker to achieve a teaching degree, or to even enroll in the teaching program. as well as pointing up that, to use the vernacular, brown nosing is the practical definition of giving more than 100% of one’s effort and it is that that seems to be rewarded. As I see the issue getting around those who have made it through brownnosing and who are unlikely to make achievement easier for a truly creative person is the problem.and ranting, as I tend to do, at the business type, is like telling the fox not to bother the chickens. Or perhaps the animals involved should be the cobra and the mongoose.

“Ford cannot continue much longer without a radical change in its business model,” said John Casesa, an industry analyst with Casesa Strategic Partners. Both companies “have got to resize, restructure and reinvent themselves.”
When I was still a Ph.D.candidate at The University of Minnesota I received an invitation from the International Institute of Arts and Letters In Zurich inviting me to become a “fellow” because of my work. I didn’t know what work they had in mind so I wrote them and they responded equally vaguely on a postcard for the postman to be impressed. At the same time there were two names mentioned, one I recognized from my field, Dr.Irwin Zeigfeld and the CEO of General Mills, Harry Bullis,about whom I knew nothing at the time but General Mills was local business I wrote to Ziegfeld to ask his opinion and I called Bullis to ask his. Ziegfeld responded appropriately and Bullis did in the fashion his name suggests.I told him who I was, where I was and why I was calling and as soon as I had expelled the last breath he started in at me with : “Are you a member of that g…d…..organization I gave you $500 not long ago and I’ve heard nothing from you since….” I interrupted this tirade to remind him that HE was the member and that the reason for my call was to find out what he thought of the organization..”Now, I know, and thank you very much and good bye’” I have had similar experiences with this type throughout my life so I am not surprised that I view them jaundicedly. Interviewed by “TIME” and asked wasn’t he afraid of getting ulcers “I DON’T HAVE ULCERS, I GIVE ‘EM” was his proud full reply. If this view of the business-type is

currently an error I shall have to change it, but I am not yet convinced. I am of the opinion that truly creative people do not treat people that way and that any creative person unfortunate enough to have been subject to Bullis’s “authority” would have been drawn, quartered and eaten alive!

Reject authority, be non-conforming, stubborn. Dominate or withdraw in cooperative learning situations. Be highly sensitive to environmental stimuli such as lights or noises.

These reactions of gifted students to the regular education environment are normal only within the context of an understanding of the gifted. Without that understanding, they may be used to label the student as ADD/ADHD or SED. See overexcitabilities. Compacting - Eliminating repetition, minimizing drill, and accelerating instruction in basic skills or lower level classes so that gifted students can move to more challenging material. Conformity - Unexceptional behavior and/or convergent thinking. The Creative Leader makes a different set of assumptions When people perceive the locus of control to reside within themselves, they are more creative and productive, and the greater their achievement. [This makes a lot of

sense to me. I have some very serious doubts about the effectiveness of “think tanks” coming up with anything truly creative. I feel that the only way that might happen would be if only one of the group had a sufficiently powerful personality to overwhelm all the other supposedly independent thinkers and, thereby, become the soul contributor to the effort and the final result. Creative personalities like to have control over all the processes and are not comfortable in making allowances, or negotiating agreements.] Creative leaders, therefore involve their artists, audience and communities in every step of planning. I do not think this works on little bit The Creative Leader highly values individuality and will, therefore, NOT attempt a consolidation. The sense that people operate on a higher level when they are operating on the basis of their unique strengths, interests, talents, and goals than when they are trying to conform to some imposed stereotype and tightly defined set of assigned responsibilities. I have found this to be absolutely true even though one recognizes that the final product will probably bear a strong imprint of the individual’s character They understand the difference between static and innovative organizations, and aspire to make their organization innovative. The organization may carry out the innovation, it doe not originate it, The Creative Leader encourages people to be self-directing. Creative people are selfmotivators. leave them alone and that will probably be sufficient encouragement. They sense intuitively what researchers have been telling us for some time--that a universal characteristic of the maturation process is movement from a state of dependency toward states of increasing self directedness.
