Firm Presentations (at 7:00PM)

Alvarez & Marsal (CBC 155)

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) was founded in 1983 when Tony Alvarez II and Bryan Marsal recognized the
opportunity to provide radically different advice and hands-on support to organizations facing operational and
financial hurdles—situations demanding action, objectivity and real results.

Committed to its core values, A&M has evolved from a boutique player to the premier independent global
professional services firm with a reputation for providing leadership, problem-solving and value-creation to
underperforming and robust companies across the industry spectrum. The firm today tackles
wide ranging issues

Suntrust (RB 120)

SunTrust Banks, Inc., with total assets of $172.9 billion on December 31st, 2010, is one of the nation’s largest
financial services holding companies. The Company’s mission is to help people and institutions prosper by
providing financial services that meet the needs, exceed the expectations, and enhance the lives of our clients,
communities, colleagues, and ultimately our shareholders

My ALPFA Story

When I joined this organization in the Spring of 2009, I didn’t know what to expect. After thinking about it and
debating with my friends whether or not to join, I can now happily say that I am glad that they dragged me in.
When I first joined, I wasn’t much involved; I was too preoccupied with my grades and my GPA, and Internships
and Leadership programs didn’t come knocking on my door. I came at a junction in my road where I had to
reconsider my strategy.

Having high grades and GPA isn’t the only thing that recruiters look for. You need to be involved, you need to
be out there, you have to sell yourself to recruiters, and you have to prove yourself to them that you have what
it takes to represent their company.

This is where ALPFA FIU comes in. The more one gets involved, the more one reaps the benefits, and during
the process, new relationships are forged. Most of the friends that I have met, I met through ALPFA FIU, and
what makes it special is that when you join, you become part of a family, a family that helps you make that
transition from a student to a professional.

Since August of last year, I have become a totally different person, and that would not be possible without my
ALPFA FIU family. I strongly encourage all of you to be involved, to be proactive, and to step out of your
comfort zone, because that is where you realize your true potential.

Warm Regards,
Antonio Benitez
Spring 2011 ALPFA FIU Webmaster

Last Week in ALPFA FIU

This past week, members were exposed to Carlos Canasi, a former ALPFA FIU President, Accounting firm
Cherry, Bekaert, & Holland, and Financial institution Bank Atlantic.

During our General Meeting, Carlos Canasi presented. Carlos is a former ALPFA FIU President, a former
Auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers, and is currently a Forensic Accountant for Big 4 Accounting Firm Ernst
& Young. Carlos gave members insight into Forensic Accounting.

Following our General Meeting, Cherry, Bekaert, & Holland (CB&H) presented to our Accounting members.
CB&H is a midsize Accounting firm that provides services to over 25,000 clients and specializes in Accounting,
Audit, Consulting, and Tax. Members were treated to an introduction of CB&H which included the services
that they provide, the industries that they specialize in, and their relationship with Baker Tilly International.
Afterwards, members got a chance to have some fun in a friendly competition of family feud. During the feud,
members were tested with questions related to CB&H and real world events.

For our Finance members, Julio Llanes and Jonathan Rodriguez, both Vice Presidents Market Managers, came
from Bank Atlantic to present. Bank Atlantic is a company based out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, that provides
consumers and business banking services to communities throughout the state of Florida. They talked to
members about the importance of networking, how to stand out and sell yourself, involvement, daily job
routine, and so many other vital information that will help anyone succeed in their careers. Overall, the
presentation was very informational and entertaining.

After our firm presentations, members got the opportunity to help out ALPFA FIU for a good cause. Relay for
Life, the world’s largest movement to end cancer, took place in front of the Ryder Building. The event turned
out to be a huge success, as we were able to reach and break our goal of $1,000! Many thanks to our
members who participated and gave their time for a good cause.

Last Week in ALPFA FIU

This past Saturday, March 5h, 2011, ALPFA FIU hosted its QuickBooks Workshop. The event was hosted in
the State Farm Capital Marketing Lab in CBC 252. Students got the opportunity to learn the in’s and out’s of a
program that is used by approximately 85% of small businesses in the United States!

Our instructor was Julian J. Cecio, CPA, the CFO for Island Sky Corporation. Julian specializes in tax
preparation and planning, financial controller services, and internal controls design and testing.

Julian taught attendees many aspects of QuickBooks, which include how to add a customer, add products, input
discounts into specific invoices, how to write checks to customers, and much more!

It was a great turn out, with over 30 students attending. On behalf of ALPFA FIU, we would like to say thank
you to everyone that participated and helped in the event.
