Walking to find treasures in 'sleepy old town'

The first Ipoh Heritage Walk held yesterday shed light on forgotten history and boosted the interest of local residents in heritage buildings.

The Perak Tourist Association (PTA) and the Kinta Heritage Society organised the walk here, going on a two-hour trail to visit 20 old sites and historical buildings.

The landmarks included the railway station, Royal Ipoh Club, St Michael's Institution and the FMS Restaurant.

Insurance officer, Leela Valayuthan said she had been living here for the past three years and was surprised to discover the rich history behind this sleepy town. It was a trip down memory lane for Chew Mee Lee, who now lives in Hong Kong. Passing the Town Hall, Chew recalled the time she was there as a contestant in the 1983 Miss Malaysia pageant with Datuk Michelle Yeoh.

"It was the first pageant in Malaysia that was held. outside of Kuala Lumpur.

Yeoh won the title while I was a runner-up," Chew said.

PTA president Odzman Abd Kadir said the walk was organised to inculcate a love for culture and heritage in residents.

"The people here will appreciate their town much better when they know and understand its history. We hope to widen the heritage trail to include more historical treasures, as there are plenty of them in and around the city".
