Dear European Career Fair participants,

In 2008, the European Career Fair at MIT will be held for the 12th time and will foster
the development of transatlantic careers more than ever. Te need for internationally
educated, top-tier candidates as well as the growing interest in Europe as a place to live
and work, continue to shape ECF. Tis year, our motto has been concentrated into one
essential word: Connect!
Our long-standing partnership with the MIT Science and Technology Initiatives
(MISTI) has greatly contributed to the scope of the fair. In addition, the second year of
partnering with the European Commission has again given rise to a unique Science &
Technology section that ofers splendid opportunities for academic careers in Europe.
We are grateful to both our partners for such fruitful and satisfying relationships.
For the frst time in 2008, we are ofering a variety of additional resources to our
candidates through various collaborations: We are greeting representatives from the
International Career Fair in San Francisco and the IKOM in Munich, Germany. In
addition, we are proud to ofer a variety of career and networking tools to the candidates
through Nature Network Boston and the ScienceCareers services.
Roughly 4,000 registered candidates and more than 130 exhibitors make this year’s fair
not only the largest European Career Fair at MIT, but also the largest event of its kind
on the entire continent. We are proud of this achievement and we say thank you to the
ECF 2008 team. Tese highly motivated volunteers – all excellent candidates themselves
- who crafed this wonderful success with patience, resilience, outstanding dedication,
and the necessary sense of humor have made this event possible.
Enjoy the Fair! We hope that you will form new and enduring connections, and use
ECF’s resources to the fullest in order to achieve your goals.
For the European Career Fair 2008 Team,

MIT European Club
The MIT European Club would like to extend a warm welcome to our 12th
European Career Fair!
We are a student-run organization affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology having a membership of nearly 3,000 people who come from
almost every part of the world and share a common interest in Europe. Over
the years, the MIT European Club has established itself as a reference
point for many European scholars, academics, and professionals coming to
the Boston area. It is one of MIT’s most active and diverse student groups,
and organizes activities ranging from athletics to cultural events, along with
excursion for hiking and whitewater rafting in the summer, foliage tours in
the autumn, and skiing in the winter. Our staple social event is our weekly
Thursday Pub Tour, when we gather at a local pub to mingle and chat.
The European Career Fair is our most visible event on campus. It is the main
activity we hold to further the professional development of our members and
people interested in working in Europe. The fair is the largest of its kind in
the United States, providing domestic, foreign, and multinational companies
access to some of the top talents from the world’s most renowned academic
institutions. It is not only designed to provide information and personal contact
with recruiters, but also to allow them to schedule job interviews on the days
immediately following the fair.
All the events sponsored by the Club are organized by our members, who
volunteer their time, ideas, drive, and skills. Their dedication and efforts are
essential for the club’s success and at the core of what we do. In order to

MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives
MISTI
MISTI is one of MIT’s prime initiators of international
collaborations. Through its France, Germany, Italy and Spain
Programs, MISTI has established a strong partnership with
many of Europe’s leading companies and research centers.
We welcome the participants in the 2008 European Career Fair as partners in
the pursuit of this common mission.
Partnering with MISTI
MISTI works closely with corporate partners on initiatives ranging from
internships and recruitment events to workshops and seminars. Membership
in the MISTI Corporate Consortium provides companies with access to MIT,
visibility on campus and the opportunity to define their brand at MIT.
Internships
Hosting a MIT intern is one of the most effective ways for companies and research
labs to establish a direct link with MIT. To our students, these internships offer
an opportunity to experience first-hand other work and research cultures. Each
year, MISTI places over 300 MIT students in three to 12-month internships
abroad. Over half of these internships take place in Europe.
International Seed Funds
MISTI also supports MIT faculty and their European counterparts in cross-
border collaborations with research institutes and universities in France, Italy
and Spain.

Dear Participant:
Welcome to the twelfth annual European Career Fair! On behalf of MIT, I am pleased to offer
our hospitality and support to the visiting companies and attendees.
The many universities and companies in Boston and Cambridge are distinguished by their
excellence and global outlook, and together, these characteristics attract the best and brightest
students in all fields of study.
Last year the European Union was enlarged to 27 members, giving it a combined population of
just under 500 million and making it a more diverse and dynamic marketplace then ever. The
European Career Fair is an ideal venue for bringing together creative individuals and business
leaders who recognize the importance of internationalization and welcome innovation in a fluid
world economy.
I wish you much success in achieving your goals at the European Career Fair. I applaud your
work and know that it will continue to strengthen the longstanding ties between Europe and the
United States.
Sincerely,
Susan Hockfield

Dear Participants:
I am appreciative of the opportunity to support the 12
th
annual European Career
Fair in Cambridge, Massachusetts. My own career has benefited enormously
from times spent in both Europe and at Harvard, as well as close interactions
with European scientists to this day. Indeed science is practically unique among
human activities in the absence of national or cultural barriers. We may hope
that it will help take down such barriers in other realms in the future.
An open market for skilled professionals will raise standards and further the
careers of scientists everywhere. Competition for your services and freedom of
movement between Europe and the US are good and should be encouraged.
Excellence and productivity ought to be the watchwords.
I wish you success in the attainment of your personal goals and in bridging
between two continents.
Sincerely,
Roger Kornberg

Enel is Italy's largest power company and Europe's second-largest utility for installed
capacity. It produces, distributes and sells electricity and gas across Europe, North and
Latin America. After the acquisition of the Spanish utility Endesa, together with partner
Acciona, and the tender offer launched on the Russian generation company OGK-5, Enel
has now a presence in 21 countries with approx. 100.000 MW of generating capacity and
serves about 50 million power and gas customers. Listed on the Milan and New York stock
exchanges since 1999, Enel has the largest number of shareholders of any European company,
at some 2.3 million. It has a market capitalisation of about EUR 50 billion.
BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Enel is also the second-largest Italian distributor and vendor of natural gas, with over 2.3
million customers and a 12% market share.
The company has 58,548 employees and operates a wide range of hydroelectric,
thermoelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wind-power, and photovoltaic power stations. In 2006,
Enel posted revenues of 38.5 billion euros, EBITDA of 8 billion euros and net income of 3 billion
euros.
Enel was the first utility in the world to replace its Italian customersí traditional
electromechanical meters with modern electronic devices that make it possible to take meter
readings in real time and manage contractual relationships remotely. This innovation has
enabled Enel to implement time-of-use electricity charges, which offer customer savings for
evening and weekend electricity use, an initiative that has attracted interest from many utilities
in Italy and around the world.
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS
After having completed the sale of non strategic assets (property, telecommunications,
water management ect.) Enel is actively engaged in international expansion in the power and
gas market.
With 19,000 MW in plants using renewable energy resources (hydro, geothermal, wind,
solar and biomass) across the world, Enel is a world leader in the sector.
In December 2006, Enel launched a five-year plan (2007 2011) for the development of
renewable energy sources and for research and development of new environmentally
friendly technologies with an overall investment of 4.1 billion euros.
Enel is strongly focused on international growth and has a presence in Europe (Italy,
Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Greece, France and Spain), North America (Canada and the
United States) and Latin America (Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador and
Panama). With Endesa, Enel will also be present in Portugal, Argentina, Peru, Colombia
and Morocco).

Enel runs operations in Spain in the generation, distribution and sale of electricity with
Enel Viesgo, which has about 2,200 MW in installed capacity, and with Enel Union Fenosa
Renovables, a company active in the wind and hydro power sector.
On 1 October 2007, Enel and partner Acciona successfully completed their Joint Tender

Founded in 1999, Genfit is a public biopharmaceutical company
headquartered in Lille, France with its US subsidiary in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. As a cardiometabolic company, Genfit has focused
its efforts in prevention and treatment of common risk factors asso-
ciated with cardiovascular and metabolic disorders such as atheros-
clerosis, dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Ìn addi-
tion, Genfit has a special interest in selected indications such as
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease within the neurodegenerative
field as well as other indications in anti-inflammatory area.
Genfit's strategy of single-drug therapy, the ¨multimodal¨ approach,
is based on development of novel drugs with a single active ingre-
dient to address multiple risk factors in a related disorder and hence
eliminating the potential drug-drug interaction side effects associa-
ted with multiple-drug therapy. Genfit is striving to build a strong
portfolio of products adapted to multiple risk factors associated with
cardiometabolic disorders. Genfit's efforts have yielded a strong
and broad intellectual property portfolio (230 patents) and a solid
track record of academic and industrial partnerships.
Genfit's aim is to improve the care of patients by researching and
developing better and safer treatments for the future.

European Commission / ERA - Link
ERA-Link – A network of European Researchers in the USA
PURPOSE
ERA-Link is a network of thousands of European researchers, scientists and
scholars throughout the US. The website and regular emails keep ERA-Link
members informed about EU research policies, career opportunities in Europe
and opportunities for collaboration with Europe.
It is estimated that there are over 100,000 European researchers working in the
US. Regardless of the reasons that brought them overseas, and of whether or
not they intend to return, Europe wants to build and maintain links with them.
HOW DOES ERA-LINK WORK?
- The ERA-Link website provides targeted information on research funding in
Europe, research career options and other opportunities to work in or with
Europe.
- A regular flow of information alerts to ERA-Link members signals these
opportunities.
- Networking meetings and events for ERA-Link members around the US.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
The multidisciplinary network includes members at all stages of their careers and
allows them to become well connected amongst themselves and in Europe,
ensuring that they are recognized as an important resource for European
research, whether they remain in the US or choose to return.
Membership is FREE

European Commission / FP-7
The 7th Research Framework Programme
Te seventh European Research Framework Programme will provide funding of
more than 54 billion Euro over 7 years (2007-2013) to increase Europe's growth
and competitiveness, recognizing that knowledge is Europe's greatest resource.
FP-7 consists of four specific programmes:
COOPERATION – to fund collaborative projects between research teams.
IDEAS – to fund excellent individual researchers in cutting-edge frontier science
through European-level competition. Grants for starting independent researchers
as well as experienced researchers. Applicants may be of any nationality. The
work must be carried out in Europe.
PEOPLE – to fund training, mobility and career development of researchers.
Includes fellowships for Europeans and non-Europeans to work in Europe and
grants for Europeans returning to Europe after 3 years abroad.
CAPACITIES – to enhance research and innovation capacity throughout Europe.
Full information on the seventh Research Framework Programme is available at:

European Research Council
The European Research Council (ERC) is a newly-created European funding initiative, designed
to support the best scientists, engineers and scholars in Europe.
The ERC's mandate is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive
funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the
basis of scientific excellence.
The ERC, which is established by the European Commission and funded through the EU’s
Seventh Research Framework Programme with a budget of € 7.51 bn for 7 years (2007-2013),
complements other funding schemes in Europe, such as those of research funding agencies
operating at the national level and those within the EU’s Seventh Research Framework
Programme.
The ERC consists of a Scientific Council and a Dedicated Implementation Structure. It operates
under conditions of autonomy and integrity, guaranteed by the European Commission, to which it
is accountable.
ERC Grant Schemes
What kinds of ERC grants are available?
Two types of ERC grants are available to support researchers in carrying out frontier research
projects:
ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant)
The ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant) aims to provide adequate
support to researchers at the stage at which they are intending to establish or have already
established an independent research team or, depending on the field, developing an independent
research programme. Researchers applying for an ERC Starting Grant must be able to
demonstrate their potential to perform world-class research.
ERC Starting Grants allow the most promising (young) investigators to make the transition from
working under a supervisor to an independent research leader at an early stage in their research
career.
The ERC Starting Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to 2.0 million for a
five-year grant.
ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant)
The ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant) aims to encourage and support
excellent, innovative and investigator-initiated research projects carried out by leading
investigators. This funding scheme complements the ERC Starting Grant scheme by targeting
researchers who have already established themselves as being independent research leaders in
their own right.
ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders in science, engineering
and scholarship to pursue frontier research of their choice.
The ERC Advanced Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to €3.5 million for a
five-year-grant.

Research, Education, and Patient Care
The CharitÈ in the 21
st
Century
The “Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin” is the
unified medical school and hospital of the Free
University and Humboldt University in Berlin.
The Charité has grown steadily in the course of its
almost 300-year history, but never as rapidly as in
2003, when the medical faculty of the Humboldt
University, consisting of the old Charité in Berlin-
Mitte, the Rudolf-Virchow University Hospital in
Berlin-Wedding, and the clinical research depart-
ments in Berlin-Buch, was merged with the medical
faculty of the Free University, consisting of the
Benjamin Franklin University Hospital in Berlin-
Steglitz. This fusion created the largest school of medicine and university hospital
system in Europe.
The “new” Charité accepts the responsibility to serve as a creative motor for the
life sciences and as a beacon for a knowledge-based society. All research
results, applications and inventions in the life sciences directly or indirectly affect
people’s lives, contributes to their recovery from disease and promote their well-
being. We will always strive to contribute to new discoveries and to be true to our
traditional mission, “Excellence in Education, Research, Healing, and Helping”.
The high ranking of the Charité in German medical research and education will
be further strengthened by the creation of new research priorities.
Existing networks with regional and national research institutions are being
intensified and cooperation efforts are being strengthened with industrial partners
from the pharmaceutical industry, from biotechnology, bioinformatics, medical
technology, and health care services at the national and international level.
For the six million inhabitants of Berlin and Brandenburg, the new Charité is the
only institution combining biomedical research, university-level teaching, and
patient care.
The Charité also maintains a top-notch academic program for young physicians
in training from the Berlin-Brandenburg region, from within Germany, and from
abroad. The Charité, therefore, is an important enterprise in the health care
industry and is already an engine for innovation in Berlin and Brandenburg.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) is
Germany’s central, self-governing research funding organization that serves all
branches of science and the humanities by funding research projects and facilitating
collaboration among researchers.
The DFG portfolio of programs offers various possibilities of funding either individual
researchers – among them programs with a special focus on young researchers – or
groups of researchers in coordinated programs. Not only German nationals, but also
researchers from abroad can be funded by the DFG. International researchers must
carry out their research in Germany and state that they plan to pursue their research
career in Germany in future.
For funding of individual projects in the following funding schemes, doctoral/ post-
doctoral students or researchers send their application directly to the DFG:
· Temporary Positions for Principal Ìnvestigators,
· Emmy Noether Program,
· Heisenberg Program.
For funding within the DFG's coordinated programs:
· Research Training Groups,
· Graduate Schools (funded within the German Excellence Initiative),
· Clusters of Excellence (funded within the German Excellence Initiative), and
· Collaborative Research Centers,
doctoral/postdoctoral students or researchers should submit their application to the
respective university directly.
Further information about the DFG's funding programs is available under

IN IN
As allocated by the German Excellence Initiative, the Tübingen neuroscience community has been awarded a grant
for setting up a cluster of excellence, the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience. Within the Centre various institutions
will cooperate and thereby generate truly interdisciplinary research. Participating institutions include:
i University of Tübingen
i Hertie-Institute for Clinical Brain Research
i Graduate Training Centre for Neuroscience
i Max-Planck-Institute for Biological Cybernetics
i Natural and Medical Sciences Institute
i Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation
Integrative Neuroscience – understanding how the brain functions
Integrative neuroscience aims to elucidate the neuronal underpinnings of a wide spectrum of brain functions which
allow humans and animals to operate successfully in natural environments and ensure their survival. The Tübingen
neuroscience community which comprises the CIN will intensify its efforts toward the quest for understanding how
the brain generates functions such as perception, memory, communication and action. A more comprehensive
understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying these functions and their disturbances – from their genetic basis
to the processing of information in neuronal networks – will lead to the development of new approaches that bring
promise to help patients with sensory and brain disease. Moreover, it will stimulate the development of improved
biomedical instrumentation and brain-inspired engineering solutions.
Graduate Training Centre for Neuroscience
In the CIN, graduate training will play a key role. Two graduate schools, each with a distinct neuroscience focus,
will provide research oriented training for masters and doctoral students within an excellent research environment.
Numerous masters, doctoral and postdoctoral positions will be available shortly.
Openings
In the course of setting up the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience, several new professorships and junior research
groups will be established. The majority of these groups will be accomodated in a new, state-of-the-art research
building whose “laying of the cornerstone” will take place in summer 2008. The new openings include:
Professorship positions in

International from Day One
Freie Universität Berlin is a highly acclaimed university with a strong international focus. In 2007,
a mere 60 years after its creation, it was awarded the prestigious and highly exclusive ‘University of
Lxcellence' status, thus establishing itself Frmlv at the forefront of scholarlv endeavour in Germanv.
From its very beginning, the University’s history
has been inextricably linked to the idea of liberty.
Founded in 1948 in response to the persecution
of students and staß in the Soviet-occupied sec-
tor of Berlin, it received strong support from
Berlin's citizens as well as US politicians and
-businesses: beside the architectonicallv inno-
vative Henry Ford Building, which remains the
centre-piece of the campus, the lord lounda-
tion funded its main library and dining hall.
Since Germanv's re-uniFcation :ooo, the research performance of lreie Universität has been steeplv
on the rise. Instrumental to this success story was a complete restructuring of its administrative and
academic set-up. Since zoo¸, lreie Universität has re-arranged its academic resources in clusters,
and special PhD programmes have been created to meet the needs of young researchers.
At the centre of these reform eßorts stands the lnternational Network Universitv scheme. Not least
owing to its history, Freie Universität has always prided itself on its unique network of international
co-operations numbering - at present - :¸o. On top of this, the Universitv operates oßces in New
¥ork, Moscow, Beijing, and Delhi: its highlv active alumni organisation in the US completes this
impressive picture. :6 per cent of its ¸a,ooo students - studving more than :oo subjects - are from
abroad. Approximatelv 6oo scholars from outside Germanv contribute to the Universitv's diversitv
in teaching and research.
lreie Universität is recruiting students and staß on all levels for a verv broad range of disciplines
in the natural sciences and the arts and humanities - including a fair number of 'niche disciplines'
such as lewish studies and Bvzantine studies. 1he Universitv's Centre for Area Studies brings to-
gether social-sciences- and humanities-based research, combined with a regional focus, on North
and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. In the natural sci-
ences, the emphasis rests on an interdisciplinarv approach to life- and geosciences, complemented
bv mathematics, phvsics, and computer science. Besides comprising one of Germanv's Fve faculties
of veterinarv medicine, lreie Universität is associated with one of Lurope's most state-of-the-art
hospitals, enabling world-class teaching and research in the medical sciences.

The role of the Office incorporates three strategic missions:
· To monitor advances in science and technology to
stakeholders, decision makers and scientists.
· To establish and/or strengthen partnerships in science and
technology.
· To promote exchanges of students, researchers and
entrepreneurs.
Every year, the Office for Science and Technology develops
programs in the following areas: information technology, innovation and
entrepreneurship, life sciences, nanotechnologies, agronomy,
environment and sustainable development. The Office organizes major
bilateral events such as an innovation day and several cultural events
dedicated to science as a basis for mutual understanding.
The action of the Office for Science and Technology is strongly
coordinated with other diplomatic offices, such as the Trade Department
or the Cultural Services. This situation allows the Office for Science and
Technology to efficiently handle the many economic and social
implications of today’s science and technology.
