I volunteered at a COVID–19 vaccination clinic where I could assist in the process to help curb
the spread of the COVID-19 virus and eventually attain the herd-immunity threshold necessary
to enable the community to return to their pre-pandemic lives. At the clinic, I was responsible for
checking in residents and providing them with information pertinent to the vaccine. My duties
included making sure that recipients had registered and scheduled an appointment for their
second dose, confirming that forms were accurately filled, and checking a form of identification
to verify their eligibility to get the vaccine, according to the state’s guidelines. I also informed
them on the type of Covid vaccine currently available on site (Moderna), the common side
effects of the vaccine versus atypical symptoms (usually indicating COVID–19), and the
necessity for them to stay for at least 15 minutes after their shot so they could be monitored for
any adverse reactions. Lastly, I directed them to the room where they would be administered the
vaccine.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
This vaccination clinic, still ongoing at Northwest Medical Center, offered COVID-19
vaccinations daily between the hours of 0730 – 0930 (day shift) and 1830 – 2030 (evening shift)
at the time I was volunteering. I volunteered 1/27 (evening), 1/28 (day), 2/3 (evening), and 2/4
(evening). Currently, COVID-19 vaccines are being offered daily between 0800 and 1630 at this
facility.
important role supporting an interprofessional health care team provide a service that will result
in so many lives being saved during a historic global pandemic. This unique opportunity not only
gave me an insight into the strategies, skills, and processes implemented to address a public
health crisis, but also allowed me to communicate effectively with patients who appeared
apprehensive about getting vaccinated and to answer questions to the best of my ability relating
to the possible side effects and general concerns about the vaccine.
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
First, I would encourage and educate about the importance of immunizations. Second, I plan to
continue listening and addressing any issues my patients may have by showing compassion,
providing comfort whenever appropriate, and being understanding and not minimizing concerns.
Lastly, I will utilize some of the processes I saw that were implemented to ensure the smooth
I would absolutely recommend this professional experience in the future as I was able to work
with a variety of healthcare professionals and see the role each played. Volunteering in this
clinical setting also allowed me to interact with the community. Their gratitude and appreciation
of the service we were providing made me feel good to give back to the community and also
made me realize the difference I can make as a nurse, especially during a global pandemic.
