COM AN ANALYSIS OF THE FAMOUS HADEETH OF JABIR ABOUT THE PROPHET MOHAMMED BEING NOOR (LIGHT) BY ABDUL KAREEM IBN OZZIE
Some Sufi Ashari Maturidis claim the prophet Mohammed is a man well as literal noor (light). So they state that the prophet was first created from the light of Allah and then the rest of the creation was then created from this light. They use a number of verse from the Quran (with the incorrect tafsir) and hadeeth (which are mostly weak or fabricated) to try to prove this view of theirs is correct. One of the Sufi Ashari Maturidis strongest and most famous proofs utilized to prove that the prophet Mohammed was first created from the light of Allah and the rest of the creation was created from his light is the following hadeeth. From Mamar from ibn ul Munkadir from Jabir who said, "What is the first thing that Allah created?" The Holy Prophet replied 'The first thing that Allah created was the Light of Your Prophet, Oh Jabir'. Then the Holy Prophet continued 'Then He created within that light all goodness and after that, He created everything else. When He created that Luminous Light, He stood it before Him in the Station of Nearness (Maqam al Qurb) for 12,000 years. This light He divided into 4 portions. From the first portion, He created the Throne. From the second portion He created the Pedestal. From the third portion, He created the Angels that carry the Throne and the Trustees of the Pedestal. The fourth portion He then stood before Him in the Station of Love (Maqam al Hubb) for 12,000 years. From this fourth portion He created 4 more portions. From the first portion He created the Pen, from the second He created the Lawh (tablet), from the third He created Paradise. Then He stood the fourth portion before Him in the Station of Fear (Maqam al Khawf) for 12,000 years.
From this portion, He created 4 more portions. From the first portion He created the Angels, from the second He created the Sun, from the third He created the Moon and all the celestial bodies. Then He stood the fourth portion before Him in the Station of Hope (Maqam ar Rija) for 12,000 years. From this portion, He again created 4 more portions. From one He created the Intellect ('Aql), from the second portion Knowledge and Gentleness, from the third, Tawfiq (success). The fourth portion He stood before Him in the Station of Shyness (Maqam al Haya) for 12,000 years. After 12,000 years, Allah turned His glance upon this light. This look caused luminous beads of perspiration to appear upon it. From each of these 124,000 drops of light, Allah created the Spirit of a Prophet or Messenger. Then the Spirits of the Prophets exhaled. From this exhalation, Allah created all the Saints and the people who will be in perpetual happiness, the martyrs and those who are obedient from among the believers until the Day of Judgement. (The Prophet continued and said) 'So the Throne and the Pedestal are from my light. Paradise and every enjoyment and perpetual bliss is from my light. The Angels of the Seven Heavens are from my light. The selected angelic beings are from my light. The Sun and the Moon and all the celestial bodies from my light. Knowledge, Gentleness and Success, from my light. The spirits of the Messengers and the Prophets, from my light. The martyrs and the conscious people from the result of my light. Then Allah created 12 veils. That part of my light which is the fourth portion of the fourth portion, stood in every veil for 1,000 years. These veils are the veil of generosity, the
veil of happiness, the veil of awe, the veils of mercy and kindness and knowledge, humbleness, dignity, gentleness (sakinah), patience and realisation, truthfulness. After worshipping Allah in every veil for a period of 1,000 years, Allah caused the light to emerge and He placed it upon the Earth. That light illuminates what is between the Easts and the Wests like a lantern in the darkness of the night. Then Allah created Adam from the Earth, took from that light and placed it within his forehead. This light was transmitted to Seth and from him it passed from one pure soul to another - from goodness to goodness until Allah transferred it to the loins of Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib. From him, it passed into the womb of my mother, Aminah. Then He brought me forth into this world. He made me the Master of the Messengers (Sayyid al Mursalin), Seal of the Prophets (Khatm an Nabiyyin) and a mercy for all creations. That is how the creation of your Prophet was accomplished, Oh Jabir. Thus said the Holy Prophet Muhamad (saw).” Narrated by Ibn al-Arabi al-Hatimi (one of the most deviant Sufis ever to live) in his book “Talqeeh Al-Azhaan wa Muftaah Ma’rifat AlInsaan”, and al-Diyarbakri in his book “Tarikh Al-Khamis fi Ahwal Anfasi Nafis and this narration is attributed to Abdul-Razzaq in his Musanaf by Sufis, however this is a mistake since it does not exist in his Musanaf, Jami, or his Tafsir. In fact in the Tafsir of Abdul-Razzaq he contradicts this hadeeth of Jabir and affirms that the first creation was water not the light of prophet Mohammed. In his tafsir he brought a narration from Imam Qatadah explaining the Ayah in surah Hud:7 where Allah says, “He created the water, then the throne”, Qatadah said: "this (water) is
the beginning of the creations before He created the heavens and the skies and Shaykh Ibn Jareer (Tabaree) reported that Mujahid (a famous scholar of tafsir from the taabieen) said about this verse (‘He created the water, then the throne’) " (It means) before he (Allah) created anything else" Imam al-Hafidh as-Suyootiy said in al-Hawiy in al-Fatawa 1/325 he said: "as for the hadeeth of (Jabir about)the eternity of the noor of the Prophet, it has no basis of truth" and he said: "it has no valid isnad". Shaykh Abdullah Al-Ghumari, in his “Murshid Al-Hair li Bayan Wad’ Hadeeth Jabir” he said, “This hadeeth is definitively fabricated, and it contains the terminologies of Sufis (he is referring to the different maqams (stations) mentioned in the hadeeth, in the hadeeth these Sufi maqmas are mentioned: the Station of Nearness (Maqam al Qurb), Station of Love (Maqam al Hubb), the Station of Fear (Maqam al Khawf), the Station of Hope (Maqam ar Rija) and the Station of Shyness (Maqam al Haya)). Shaykh Abdullah Al-Ghumari, in his “Murshid Al-Hair li Bayan Wad’ Hadeeth Jabir” he also said “…this is a fabricated hadeeth that has no basis in the books of Sunnah” Shaykh Abdullah Al-Ghumari, in addition to his other statements on the hadeeth of Jabir he said in “Islah Abiyat AlBurdah” p 75: “As-Suyuti said in his “Al-Hawi”: “It is not proven”, and this is an ugly Tasahul (being soft from As-Suyuti), rather it is clearly fabricated…there is in it the style of the Sufis…” Shaykh Abdullah Al-Ghumari, further said in his “Irshad AtTalibin” p 9-10: “Among the most famous fabricated hadeeth is the hadeeth (of Jabir); ‘the first thing Allah created is the light of your prophet from His light O Jabir’”
Shaykh At-Tuklah said “… Abdullah Al-Habashi and Hasan Saqqaf declared this hadeeth to be fabricated, the same as Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah and Abdullah At-Tulaydi…” Shaykh al-Albaani said “…(About the above hadeeth) The first thing that Allah created was the light of your Prophet, O Jabir”, is false and so are other similar hadeeth which say that the Prophet was created from light…” Taken from al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (458) Shaykh ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Humayd said “With regard to the reports that Allah created Muhammad from light…there is no proof that any of these reports were narrated from the Prophet (so they are fabricated). And Allah knows best. Fataawa Samaahat al-, p. 16 The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwa’s said, “…The reports which say that the first thing created by Allah was the light of the Prophet, or that Allah grasped a handful of the light from His Face and that this handful was Muhammad, then He looked at it and it formed drops, and from each of these drops He created a Prophet, or He created all of creation from the light of the Prophet – all of these reports and the like are not saheeh, and nothing like this has been narrated from the Prophet.” Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 1/310. From the above it is clear that this hadeeth is fabricated and can not be used to prove the prophet Mohammed was first created from the light of Allah and the rest of the creation was created from his light.
