On Saturday, January 29th, 14 members of the Warsaw FFA Chapter traveled to Purdue
University to compete in the Indiana FFA State Dairy Foods contest. Warsaw FFA had two
teams place first and second out of 48 different teams. Lauryn Steffe, a senior, placed 1st out
of 181 individuals. Members on the first place team were Lauryn Steffe, Kyle Quick, Maryssa
Hawley and Rheann Weaver. Warsaw’s team of Madison Dobbins, Mikaela Conley, Bryce
Owens and Lindsey O’Hara placed 2nd. Freshman, Linsdey O’Hara, was 2nd high individual
overall. Bryce Sands, Ashley Byrer, Mitchell Hall, and Mary Bonheimer took 7th place team.
The Indiana FFA State Dairy Foods contest consists of six different categories that
require members to learn about aspects of the dairy industry and being a consumer
purchasing dairy products. These include: cheese identification, detection of defects in milk,
California Mastitis testing, non-dairy versus real dairy products identification, evaluation of
milker unit parts, and an exam covering the marketing and production of dairy products.
The first place team will be representing the state of Indiana at National contest at the
National FFA Convention in October 2011.
