CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ³HILLS LIKE WHITE ELEPHANTS,´ BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY The short story ³Hills Like White Elephants

,´ by Ernest Hemingway is about a man and a woman waiting at a train station talking about an issue that they never name. The girl in the story, whose name is Jig, finally decides to go ahead and have the baby even though the man, who does not have a name, wants her to have an abortion. Though the word ³abortion´ is nowhere in the story. After careful reading of Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants", it is very clear what it's purpose is. The story takes in the Ebro River valley of Spain where Jig are waiting for a train and having drinks discussing "doing it". Obviously, by "doing it", they're referring to whether or not they should have an abortion. At the end of the story, we can only assume that they decide to go through with the abortion, when Jig tells the American male "I don't care about me." The man goes and haves a drink by himself and return to his companion. She assures him that she is fine and they both head to Madrid, where, presumably, the abortion will take place. Here we can see that the society in America is actually not healthy and also bad for us. They can easily abort the children and does not care about the risks of doing it. The man just take it for granted and said to woman that her belly is just like ³ Hills Like Elephant´ because the American views the couple's unborn child as an approaching obstacle just like a hill. The man is not a good man as he was the one who asked the woman to abort the innocent child. Jig refused because when the girl sees the long and white hills she says that ³they look like white elephants.´ As she observes the white hills she foresees elatedly the birth of her baby, something unique like the uncommon white elephant. The color white symbolizes the innocence and purity of her unborn child. In Ernest Hemingway¶s ³Hills Like White Elephants,´ the lives of Jig and the American, the main characters, are put on display for a brief period of time. Jig and the man have had a romantic relationship for quite some time, and now their future together is in jeopardy. The impregnation of Jig has caused the American to pressure her into getting an abortion.

The man is obviously in favor of the abortion. The man and woman continue arguing and stop for a little when she says. this short story is actually was not only intended for the pleasures of reading. but also though provocation. As she considers his point of view she looks at the dry side of the valley. and the conventional representation frequently drawn about men and women in the decision-making process about abortion. symbolizing her body after the abortion. . overcomes her happiness. Just as she appreciates the panorama and its connection to her unborn child the ³shadow of a cloud. he would have to settle down and raise a family. This clearly shows that Jig still has humanity in herself and still loves the baby. Overall. both of the characters are different from each other which is the man is an irresponsible because he wants the baby to be aborted even Jig refused to do so. The use of striking point of view in ³White Elephants´ forces the reader to reconsider the ethical character of the male and the female in the story. and everything he says is an effort to persuade her into it which proved that he is really a bad person. Hemingway was able to highlight the society of American through her writing. This shows that the American young people love to live freely and does not want to have a responsibility. ³Would you please please please please please please please please stop talking?´ The American man clearly wants this abortion because he wants to keep his current lifestyle. This short story can be analyzed from the feminism point of view. while we have no one passing verdict in the part about who is supporting the "correct thing": to keep the child or abort it. which is barren and sterile.´ which represents the abortion of the fetus. If the woman goes ahead with the pregnancy. which would mean forgoing his youthful desires of seeing the world. From what I understand.
