Re: Hire a “District Architect” as your “Chief Facilities Executive”

Dear President Garcia and the LAUSD Board of Education:

On behalf of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA), we
encourage you to utilize the leadership resources of our Board of Directors on how to most
effectively move forward with your building program. AIA|LA is a professional organization
representing the expertise and wide-community perspective of 3200+ architects and design
professionals and we’re here to help you through this transition.

Your building program strengthens our communities with better education and ensures future
economic competitiveness as a region. However, in light of recent events, the architecture
community feels compelled to impress upon the LAUSD Board of Education that there is an
opportunity to further integrate the leadership of the architecture profession in identifying the
most effective way forward.

We urge that you hire a District Architect as your next Chief Facilities Executive to ensure he
or she has the right set of qualifications to execute your next set of investments with the mastery
and discipline that such an undertaking will most certainly demand. Those who manage the
facilities capital investment program require the skills, technical capabilities, construction-
management experience, equilibrium in judgment, values and interests that only those with
training and experience in the real world of planning, design and construction can offer—in short,
an architect.

Architects are uniquely qualified to embrace the full range of technical capabilities and possess
the expertise required to execute large-scale capital improvement programs; and most
importantly, possess the judgment to fulfill the greater agenda of realizing first-rate campuses and
facilities for students, parents and communities. Architects are better qualified at managing the
work because they have a comprehensive perspective of the entire planning, design and
construction program.

We look forward to further engaging you in this discussion and welcome your outreach.

Very truly yours,

Nicci Solomons, Hon. AIACC
