The Somnath Temple (Gujarati:સોમનાથ મંિદર) located in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in
Saurashtra, on the western coast of Gujarat, India, is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of the
God Shiva. Somnath means "The Protector of (the) Moon God". The Somnath Temple is known
as "the Shrine Eternal", having been destroyed six times and rebuilt six times.[1][2] Most recently
it was rebuilt in November 1947, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the area for the
integration of Junagadh and mooted a plan for restoration. After Patel's death, the rebuilding
continued under K. M. Munshi, another minister of the Government of India.[3][4]
History
[edit] Significance
According to the legends, Soma or the Moon God built the temple in gold, Ravana in silver, and
Shri Krishna in wood. Soma was cursed by his father-in-law Daksha to wane because Soma
loved only one of his wives, all of which happened to be Daksha's daughters. His other wives
complained about this negligent behavior of Soma to their father Daksha, and thus the curse. He
then built a Shivlinga at the Prabhas tirth (a Hindu pilgrimage) and prayed to Lord Shiva who
removed the curse partially. Thus, causing the periodic waning of moon.[5][6][7] Pleased by the
prayers Soma (Moon god), Lord Shiva decided to rest in that Lingam till eternity, and thus the
Jyotirlingam.
Nagarjuna
Nagarjuna lived c. AD 150 -- c.250 though the buddhist tradition maintains he lived about five hundreds years or
more. Likely there were several men who were called Nagarjuna. We can distinguished: Nagarjuna as philosopher,
Nagarjuna as mahasiddha or great magic and Nagarjuna --nathsiddha or alchemist.
Nagarjuna -- philosopher. Pressumed author of "The Grat Treatise on Perfectin of Wisdom"
(Mahaprajniaparamita-siastra), preserved in its Chinese translation by Kumarajiva. The another
his famous book is Mulamadhyamakakarika or "Fundamentals of the Middle Way"
With the method of reductio ad absurdum or to contradiction, Nagarjuna attempted to prove that
all worldly thoughts are empty (sunya) or relative, and to point to his belief that the true path is
that of the middle, the path that is between or, more correctly, above extremes. This belief has
been called the doctrine of emptiness of all things; however, as has been pointed out, this relative
and should be seen only as means of argumentation, which must itself be transcended.
Nagarjuna presented this middle path above extremes most clearly in the following statesment of
that what he considered to be the Eightfold Truth of Buddhism:
Nothing come to beings -- nor does anything disappear. Nothing is eternal -- nor has
anything an end. Nothing is identical -- nor is anything differentiated. Nothing moves here
-- nor does anything move there.
Mahasiddha Nagarjuna. Great wizard and Buddhist yogi. He lived in IX century and probably
was disciple of famous mahasiddha and poet Saraha who gave him tantric initiation of
Guhyasamaja, both the rite of right and left hand.
The Buddhist tradition considers that the founder of Madhyamaka, the famous philosopher,
Nagarjuna who lived in II century and great wizard from IX century as well as the alchemist
from XI century, this was the same person. However it is believed today, there were three
Nagarjunas at least, or more, perhaps. It is supposed, Nagarjuna was the author of the
commentary Panchatrama to the five levels of yoga exercises adapted by Guhyasamaja-tantra.
Tradition describes Nagarjuna also as alchemist who compiled a book about rasayana. The last
one lived in X or XI century probably.
His biography is full of wonderful events like becoming of invisible, participation in magical
duel, making of gold etc. Eventually having received the vow of Boddhisattwa, he cut his head
by the stem of grass kusha, that was sole means to commit the suicide because he killed a fly in
former life just by means of the stem of grass kusha. The head and the body were buried at
distance several miles but they approached every year because before death, Nagarjuna said he
would return on earth yet.
Nagardżuna nathsiddha--alchemist. According to Al Biruni, the traveller and writer coming
from Ghazni (973-1058):
"The famous representative of science Rasayana (rasa means gold or mercury) was Nagarjuna,
who was born in the castle Daihak, near Somnath (Sindh). His art was the best and he wrote a
book that included the whole literature on this theme. He lived hundred years before our times."
We can identify the rasayana-siddha with Nagarjuna who was one of the founders the line of
naths together with Goraksha, Julundhara, Chaurangi and Charpati, who lived in X century.
Rasayana is integral part of nath hathayoga sadhana. More, it is possible that there is the same
Nagarjuna, who could speak Tibetan and translated on Sanskrit the sadhana Ekajata. Tradition
makes known he had mother with one eye, with one bun, one tooth and one tit.
M. Eliade has written that in the Upanishada "Rasa" is a mention of sage Nagarjuna who could
make gold from the stones in form pippala.
"Sage Nagarjuna had vision such magic procedure: In south kingdom Kerala, where are many
woods, not far from the sea, in a village Priti, there are mined stones in form of pippala, which
include veins of gold. They are taken and ground to fine powder. The powder is treated with
horse blood; next the powder is solved in human blood seven times. It is crushed in the water of
basilisk once more and then is drying according to the procedure. When you receive the glue you
must filtered it by sieve. To that fluid you need add a hundred part of copper. Then each part of
copper is doubled and melted together and mixed with one part of gold. It is mixed with honey,
milk etc.. So you get excellent gold, so brilliant like river gold."
Nagarjuna had another skills yet, for example: nirmana or transformations like diminishing to
dimensions of atom, increasing to filling up the space, going through the walls, walking in the
air, touching the sun and moon as well as the changing gold into stones and stones into gold.
There are existed yet four nirmana namely: changing the substance by means of herbs, precious
gems and magical tricks; changing the substance by means of superscience; changing the
substance by devas, nags and asuras. The creatures called rupadhatu can change the substance by
means of power of concentration (samadhibala).
Marco Polo mentioned about yogis called chugchi who can live 150 or more years. They used
special elixir, prepared from sulphur and quicksilver, every two weeks. They are used to drink it
for childhood and therefore they live so long.
There are also yogis who make only gold and mercury. They drink it every day, in the morning
and therefore they have excellent health, especially it strengthens the stomach
Emir Chusru considers that the long life is attained in India by means of pranajama or limiting
the number of breaths, even entire stopping the respiring. Some yogi lived 350 years owing to
that. There are some people, who can foresee the future events dependently which hole of nose is
more open or closed. Such wizards are many in Kashmir. They can fly in air like birds or become
invisible, putting the antimony in the eyes.
