What is Mental Wellness

About Collage Students


Mental wellness is a positive state of mental health. It is more than the absence of mental
illness. Discover what being mentally well means, and how it can help you lead a fulfilling
life. Being mentally well means that your mind is in order and functioning in your best
interest. You are able to think, feel and act in ways that create a positive impact on your
physical and social well-being.

MENTAL ILLNESS

40% of students fail to seek help.


80% feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities as a student.
50% have struggled greatly from anxiety and as a result have struggled in school.
30% of students reported that they had problems with school work due to a mental health issue.
70% of students rated their mental health below average or poor.
A mere 7% of parents reported that their students suffer from mental issues in collage.

EMOTIONAL HEALTH

EMOTIONS CAN BE PROBLEMATIC

Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common emotions college students experience, often as a
result of the demands of college, work, and family and friends.

Loneliness
Loneliness is a normal feeling that most people experience at some time.

Depression
Depression, like anxiety and loneliness, is commonly experienced by college students. It

may be a mild sadness resulting from specific circumstances or be intense feelings of

hopelessness and helplessness. Depression, like stress, can lead to unhealthy

consequences such as poor sleep, overeating or loss of appetite, substance abuse,

relationship problems, or withdrawal from activities that formerly brought joy.

Stress.

We all live with occasional stress. Since college students often feel even more stress

than most people, it’s important to understand it and learn ways to deal with it so that it

doesn’t disrupt your life.

THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR


MENTAL HEALTH

1. Value yourself
Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self-criticism.

2 . Take care of your body


Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health.

Be sure to: Eat nutritious meals, Drink plenty of water, Exercise,

which helps decrease depression and anxiety and improve moods,

Get enough sleep.

4. Surround yourself with good people.


People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a

support network.

5. Learn how to deal with stress.


Like it or not, stress is a part of life. Try One Minute Stress Strategies, do exercise, take a nature

walk, play with your pet or try journal writing as a stress reducer. Also, remember to smile and

see the humor in life. Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain,

relax your body and reduce stress.

6. Quiet your mind.


Try meditating, Mindfulness and/or prayer. Relaxation exercises and prayer can improve your

state of mind and outlook on life.

7. Set realistic goals.


Decide what you want to achieve academically, professionally and personally, and write down

the steps you need to realize your goals. Aim high, but be realistic and don't over schedule.

8. Get help when you need it.


Seeking help is a sign of strength is not a weakness. And it is important to remember that

treatment is effective. People who get appropriate care can recover from mental illness and

addiction and lead full, rewarding lives.
