Professional Internship e-Logbook

Guidelines on the use of this Logbook

1. This logbook, if properly kept, will be a very useful reference for the author in
his/her future career. It may serve as a document to highlight industry
experience to prospective employers. Also, a faithfully kept logbook will give you
pertinent information for your PI report.

2. The purpose of the logbook is for you to document your training and the learning
experience as a result of performing tasks assigned by supervisors. Should you
have other issues that require the attention of your NTU tutor urgently, please
send her an email.

3. This logbook should be completed and submitted at the same time to

your NTU Tutor and organisation supervisor at the end of every month
(last submission on end June). Supervisor’s comments, if any, can still be
incorporated and forwarded to the tutor in the subsequent month.

4. It is advisable for you to get your Organisation Supervisor to comment on your

logbook contents. This will provide you with feedback on the accuracy of your
logbook entries and help your organisation supervisor plan your next stage of
training. Please incorporate your supervisor’s comments in Part IV, if any.

5. For the first time, please complete all parts in this e-logbook. Subsequently,
copy the format for Part II, III and IV for completion.

6. A summary of training record and learning experience (part II) is to be

completed, followed by a brief explanation of internship duties under the heading
“Training Record” (part III). If there are any diagrams/charts/drawings, etc they
may be inserted here. The description should be brief but concise and,
preferably, be limited to eight pages.

7. It is advisable for you to carry a small notebook to make rough jottings of daily
events which can provide the material for your logbook entries.

Part III: Training Record & Learning Experience

My first impression in Design Bridge Asia was not quite as what I expected when I first
set foot in the company. Thinking that it was the beginning of the year and everyone was
still fresh from the Christmas season, I would expect the staff in Design Bridge Asia to be
relaxed and cheery for the start of the year. However, What I noticed was that every
single one of the staff was already at their full gear, busy typing away on their computers.
Then it struck me that in the real world, there are no ‘seasons’. Everyone was already
working at their maximum capacity, running from place to place, and some even
traveling from countries to countries for meetings etc.

Over the weeks as I worked with the staff here. It has helped me cultivate the attitude that
when work comes, there is no room for procrastination. Especially since Design Bridge is
an international company which deals with many international clients, time is an
important consideration in all the work we do. Through doing up budget sheets I learnt
that every single staff that is involved in a project has a rate that is chargeable to client.
This means that efficiency has got to be the key for work here. Designers cannot take
their time to come up with a design because their hours are calculated and chargeable to
the client, and so is everyone else (client directors, strategist etc.). Some of my colleagues
even miss lunch to ensure that their work gets done (which amazes me about how
devoted they are to their work).

Initially I was tasked to do a lot of research for a product. It was honestly pretty boring at
first, having to look through the internet for images and articles and what not. It gets even
worst when internet search results disappoint. However towards the end of the month
when I was given more tasks and get to sit in more briefings, I realized that this was
important for the client servicing team as it helps to guide the designers in terms of what
to avoid, what to look out for when designing (e.g. not risking to let the product design
look like a competitor’s design).It also help me familiarized with the brand Also, the
preparation of various documents helped me get a sense of what the whole project was
about, even though I was clueless about it initially.

I think working in Design Bridge has taught me to look at packaging in a whole new way.
As part of a brand, the packaging pretty much says a lot about the product. Working with
all these products makes me more sensitive to the products I use around me. For example,
the mere choice of colors and text on a packaging tells us a lot about the brand
proposition. Even the images that is present on the front of pack of a product is a result of
a detailed thought process by the clients, strategist, designers and the client servicing
team on how they want their packaging to speak to consumers. Every small detail on the
pack affects how consumers view the brand and the product and this is very important to
the client and the designers.

On a side note, it is interesting to note that Design Bridge Asia is made up of staff of 17
different nationalities. It is always fun to hear about experiences of different people in
this company, especially since they have been working and living globally. It is essential
for us, as we live in these times, to be open about global options as the world gets
smaller. Work is no longer constrained to local business and Design Bridge is a great
example of a international company with global staff.
