BIOLA UNIVERSITY JOB DESCRIPTION Student Media Board The Chimes Title of position: Chimes features/A&E editor

Basic function and responsibility: The Chimes features/A&E editor is responsible for the content of the Lens online and in print. Primarily, this person delegates assignments to freelance writers, editing for content, grammar, spelling, etc. This is a mentorship role. Additionally, the features/A&E editor uploads stories to the web and keeps writers accountable for convergent elements. The editor meets individually with the B-section design editor to facilitate uniformity in content. The features/A&E editor meets individually with writers and coaches them through the process. The ideal candidate is a strong writer/editor and can motivate and challenge contributors to meet a well-defined vision. The editor is in tune with diversity. The ideal candidate is also familiar with SEO and basic web programs. Duties: 1. Oversee the articles for the features/A&E tabs online and in print. Meet weekly with Bsection design editor to help plan bold layout ideas.

Secure articles and freelance writers for web content daily, and for enough content to fill space in print. Upload some stories to the web, formatting appropriately. Ensure that writers conform to convergent requirements.Ensure that all writers attend any mandatory training and are familiar with Google Docs. Ensure that all current Biola-related stories are covered, if applicable. Communicate with photo editors to obtain photos related to the stories, both for the web and for print. Advise, coach and develop a writing staff. Conduct weekly meetings with the writing staff as a whole, in addition to one-on-one meetings or phone calls as needed to ensure assignments are completed with excellence. Write features stories in a professional manner and train writers to be professional. Edit all related stories for content, grammar, spelling, facts, etc. before copy editing staff edits stories. Meet all writing deadlines and ensure that the features/arts & entertainment writing staff does the same.

Collaborate with the web staff to produce special content online.

12. Attend weekly budget meetings and submit well-developed story ideas. 13. Select, help hire and train an apprentice in spring. The apprentice should work 10 hours a week under the current editor. Supervision received: Editor-in-chief, managing web editor, managing production editor Supervision of others: Freelance writers, graphic designers Qualifications: General: Demonstrate a working knowledge and familiarity with AP style. Strong editing, grammar and writing skills. Ability to supervise and provide constructive criticism in a helpful and appropriate manner. Flexible attitude. Demonstrate working knowledge of computer and web programs such as Google Docs, Wordpress and Excel. Good interpersonal skills and ability to lead a writing staff. An eye for visually compelling story components. Able to delegate assignments. Education and Experiences: At the time of election or appointment, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0, have completed at least one semester at Biola University with a full-time student status and currently be enrolled as a full-time student. During the term of service, maintain the previously mentioned grade point average on a semester basis and maintain a full-time student status. Prior work or class experience in journalism is necessary. Demonstrate familiarity with the media and entertainment world. Hours worked: 10 hours, 9 months
