Reflective Statement

Artifact: Comprehension Lesson with SmartBoard

Language Arts Standard 3

All teachers should give constructive instruction and feedback to students in both written
and oral contexts while being aware of diverse learners’ needs. Teachers should effectively
provide a variety of instructional strategies, constructive feedback, criticism, and
improvement strategies.
3A. understands how to analyze an audience to determine culturally appropriate
communication strategies to share ideas effectively in both written and oral formats with
students and their families, other faculty and administrators, and the community and
business in general.
3B. understands how to use diverse instructional strategies and assessments that include
an appropriate balance of lecture, discussion, activity, and written and oral work.
3C. analyzes content materials to determine appropriate strategies and techniques to
create successful learning through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
3E. conducts effective classroom discussions by managing groups, asking questions,
eliciting and probing responses, and summarizing for comprehension.
3F. uses a variety of media to enhance and supplement instruction.

1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and
understanding of the standard—put the standard into your own words.

This standard is about how I, as a teacher, teacher will teach my students in ways that are

relevant to them, with constructive feedback and scaffolded lessons. In my lessons, I will

consider where the students are in their process of learning, and I will diversify their lessons, so

that they can learn maximally in the classroom, receiving the type of instruction that would

benefit them most. I will be sure that my lessons are culturally and linguistically appropriate,

and I will use strategies that will create successful learning through reading, writing, speaking,

and listening. Not only that, but I will also use technology and media to enhance my lessons as

well.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the
standard.
This is a reading comprehensions lesson that I used in my 6th grade Social Studies placement.

While I was there, I was in charge of teaching a FLEX class, which was a study hall, where I was

instructed to teach reading and literacy lessons. I developed this reading lesson for a classroom

of struggling readers. This group of students had a particularly hard time applying readings to

assignments—using comprehension strategies. This lesson was in response to that problem, so

the lesson was developed in response to the students’ weaknesses. In this lesson, I chose a short

story by Langston Hughes, because the classroom was majority African American students who

spoke in dialects. In this story, the 2 main characters also speak in a dialect. Lastly, I used the

Smart Board to help the students be more interested in the activity

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in
the future to further meet the standard.
B If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how
your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

This artifact was used in my practice. In the future, I would most likely follow up using some

sort of assessment technique to track the students learning and progress. I would then develop a

series of lessons following, taking the comprehension of the story to a more in-depth, critical

thinking activity. I could also incorporate something along the lines of videos or music to make

my use of media more evident. I could also include communication strategies to share our work

with families, administration, and fellow co-workers. I would need to be sure that I understand

the cultural diversity of my students and their families to be sure that I communicate in a

sensitive way to them.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a
Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

As a result of this meeting this standard, I am more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse

society because I understand more clearly how to develop lessons around the needs of my

students. I am able to give effective and constructive criticism and instruction to improve the

learning and development of my students. I also exercised my willingness to consider cultural

sensitivities to what literature I choose to use with my population of students. I will be able to

use these techniques when I have a diverse classroom of my own.
