Etymology of the words Íसहः siṃhaḥ and சி+கn siṅgam

The word Singam is a pure Tamil word. This is derived from the Tamil word Seku.

ெச·¹-æதe seku-, 1. To destroy, kill; ெகாeeதe. (பி+.) 2. To conquer;
ெவeeதe. ெபா·tெபலாn வானக. ெச·æ·ேம (சீவக. 1903).

Sanskrit pundits tried to connect with the word Íहस् hims and thereby claim that the
word Íसहः siṃhaḥ is alleged derived form Íहस् hims by merely saying "hinasti iti
simhah" - hinasti smaraNa mAtreNa samasta pApAn iti simhah. According to this
interpretation, the word himsa changes to simha by transposition of letters. There
is no proof or logic for that claim.

Íहस् hiṃs Íहस् 1, 7 P., 1 U. (Íहसित, िहनि¯त, Íहसयित-ते , Íहिसत) 1 To strike, hit. -2 To
hurt, injure, harm; दीघl बुि¯मतो बाã स ता-यां हि¯त Íहिसतः Pt.1.37. -3 To afflict, tor-
ment; िहनि¯त u¯य¯गं ¯वर इव गरीयािनप इतो Māl.2.1. -4 To kill, slay, destroy
completely; कìÍत सूते दु ¯कृ तं या िहनि¯त U.5.31; R.8.45; न िहन¯¯या¯मना¯मानं ततो याित परां
गितम् Bg.13.28; Bk.6.38;14.57;15.78.

If the alleged word Íसहः siṃhaḥ is having the meaning of “to kill, slay, destroy” as
mistakenly connected with the word Íहस् hiṃs Íहस्, the Tamil word ெச·¹-æதe
seku-, 1. To destroy, kill; ெகாeeதe. (பி+.) is having the same meanings to
evolve Íसहः siṃhaḥ and is the direct root for Íसहः siṃhaḥ

Íसहः siṃhaḥ is derived from the Tamil word “ெச· seku” only.
