It is a disease process that begins when an abnormal cell is transformed by the genetic mutation of the
cellular DNA.
- Epidemiologic studies have shown that cancer incidence differs with regards to: gender
( males>females), age group (older>younger), race ( African-Americans).
- The leading type of cancer is prostate (men) and breast (women). The leading cause of cancer death is
lung cancer.
- Characteristics of benign and malignant tumors:
o Benign Malignant
1. Cell characteristics Well-differentiated Undifferentiated
2. Mode of growth Expansion Infiltration
3. Rate of growth Usually slow Usually rapid
4. Metastasis Does not metastasize Metastasizes
5. General effects Usually none Weight loss, anemia, anorexia
- Carcinogenesis, or malignant transformation has a three-step cellular process: initiation, promotion,
and progression.
- Etiology

d. Curative
2. Radiation therapy- can be used as curative, palliative, prophylactic, and
as neoadjuvant( prior to local definitive measure) treatment.
o Causes disruption of the DNA, which eventually leads to cell death. Tissues
that undergo frequent cell division are most sensitive to radiation therapy.
A. Ways of administration
a. External radiation (Teletherapy)
b. Internal radiation ( Brachytherapy)
B. Protecting the caregiver
a. Shield
b. Time
c. Distance
