Homeopathy: General Information on Prescribing and Administering Homeopathic Medicines
Janet Levatin

It is necessary for practitioners to understand the information in this appendix before recommending homeopathic treatment for any of the conditions included in this book. Therefore it is strongly suggested that this appendix and Chapter 5 in Section I of this book be read in their entirety (and subsequently referred to as needed) before practitioners utilize the homeopathic treatment recommendations in the chapters on individual medical conditions. Who Can Be Treated Homeopathically? One of the benefits of homeopathic treatment is that homeopathic medicines can be given to individuals at any age or stage of life, including infants, young children, and pregnant and nursing women. Homeopathic medicines can be given to people with medical conditions ranging from minor to serious. They can also be given to patients using other forms of treatment, both conventional and alternative, as there are essentially no interactions between homeopathic medicines and other substances or therapies. Obtaining Homeopathic Medicines Homeopathic medicines up to the 30C potency are usually available over the counter at health food stores or pharmacies and can also be obtained by mail order (see the list of homeopathic pharmacies and retail distributors at the end of this appendix). Acute versus Chronic Prescribing Homeopathy can be used to treat both chronic and acute conditions. For patients with chronic conditions, homeopathy can provide profound, long-lasting, curative changes; however, effective case taking, accurate case analysis and prescribing, and follow-up require a significant amount of training and expertise. It is appropriate for practitioners who have not had extensive training in the science and art of homeopathy to begin by prescribing for acute, self-limited conditions; therefore most of the treatment recommendations in this book are for acute conditions, although occasional treatment recommendations for chronic or recurrent conditions of low severity are included as well. With training and experience, interested practitioners can begin to treat more complex cases. 468

Gauging One’s Level of Expertise In order to help practitioners with varying levels of homeopathic training and experience determine which medical conditions may be appropriate for them to treat, the following practitioner expertise categories have been developed. Each medical condition in the book has been assigned to one or more categories.

Category 1
With the understanding that each case is unique and must be evaluated fully at the time of presentation, category 1 conditions usually can be treated homeopathically with a reasonable degree of safety and a reasonable chance of success by clinicians who have only introductory training and limited experience in homeopathy. Category 1 conditions include acute conditions of low severity and complexity and chronic or recurrent conditions of low severity and complexity.

Category 2
With the understanding that each case is unique and must be evaluated fully at the time of presentation, category 2 conditions usually can be treated homeopathically with a reasonable degree of safety and a reasonable chance of success by clinicians who have a moderate amount of training and some clinical experience in homeopathy. Category 2 conditions include acute conditions of low to moderate severity and complexity and chronic or recurrent conditions of low to moderate severity and complexity.

Category 3
With the understanding that each case is unique and must be evaluated fully at the time of presentation, safe and successful treatment of category 3 conditions usually requires extensive training in the art and science of homeopathy and should be undertaken only by clinicians who have advanced training and extensive clinical experience in homeopathy. Category 3 conditions include acute conditions of moderate to high severity and complexity and chronic or recurrent conditions of moderate to high severity and complexity, including psychiatric conditions and developmental disorders.
