This study compared SARS-CoV-2 natural immunity from previous infection to vaccine-induced immunity from two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. The study found that natural immunity provided stronger and longer-lasting protection against infection and symptomatic disease from the Delta variant compared to vaccine immunity. Specifically, those with natural immunity were at a 13-fold lower risk of breakthrough infection and 7-fold lower risk of symptomatic disease compared to those with vaccine immunity during the period of Delta variant dominance. Vaccinated individuals were also at greater risk for COVID-19 hospitalization compared to those with natural immunity from previous infection.
