As much as possible, create a light, fun atmosphere that invites conversation, creativity and openness. Serve drinks and refreshments. Begin with an icebreaker. Move through the three steps of Explore, Express and Exchange listed on the following page. The Exploration of the value is primarily through conversation. Although the exploration part is the favorite among young adults, we have noticed with teens it is best to keep this as the smaller portion of the event and let them dedicate most of their time to the creative activity which is listed on the following page under “Express”. Tip: Something magical happens when you put a video camera in front of the teens and ask them to share their responses to the exploration questions. Feel free to post these. You will get wonderful results. Also, bring a camera, take pictures of the event and their creations and post them on the website. Just make sure you have model release forms. Entertainment is frequently part of the “Om Express” experience. Create an open mic segment where teens can showcase their creations and share any inspirations or thoughts that they have had about the value. Inspire them at the end of the event to use the entire month to explore the value of courage and to see if they can create a poem, song, painting, story, or video about courage. Then encourage them to exchange all thoughts and creations on the website listed at the bottom of the page. Let them know they can go global and let their voices be heard all over the world.
This step of the Spotlight Values process is about exploring the value together through reflection and conversation. It helps them make the value real and more than just a word on a page. a. Think for a moment of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Both believed in non-‐violence and refused to harm anyone, yet they were filled with tremendous power and courage. Where did their courage come from? How did they show courage in a practical way through their actions? b. How does being true to yourself allow you to be courageous? How does honesty give you the ability to be courageous? 2.
This step of the Spotlight Values process enables them to explore the value creatively and express it. Story Bag Exercise: Get a cloth bag with an assortment of objects, one for each player to take. The
objects can be ordinary objects-‐ feather, toothbrush, key, rock, etc…Ask each participant to close their eyes and reach into the bag to pull out an object. Once they pick their object, divide into teams ( 3-‐5 people/team).
Goal: Each team will use their objects to build a story about an individual who uses courage. The story must
have a main character (the hero/heroine) and a beginning, a middle where the character encounters a problem and an ending where the character finds a solution or experiences victory through using courage. Each individual must use their object to create their line of the story. For example, if someone has a rock, they could go a couple ways: “One early morning, I went out to watch the sunrise and sat upon a huge rock.” Or the player could be less literal-‐ “My sister was hard headed. She couldn’t see there was more to life than waking, sleeping and eating, so one day…(then the next player uses their object to inspire a line that will build upon the previous line. Each player can use their object to create several different lines…go as long as it takes for the team to arrive at the solution and ending of the story. Make sure at least one of the members jots it down.
This step of the Spotlight Values process allows them to share their thoughts and creations together in a fun way with the group. Invite each team to come up and share their story. If you can make this an open mic style exchange, it adds to the charm of the “Om Express” experience. Encourage them to keep exploring courage and using courage throughout the month. See item #4 on page 1. Conclude the evening with a guided meditation on courage. Meditations on the value will be available on the homepage of our website.
