Kilo, mid 50’s, looks young for his age, but we can see decades of frustration in his eyes. His skin seems coarse, hardened with many instances of bracing for impact. Angel is about one year old. He doesn’t yet speak words, but says a lot, and moves around like he’s got somewhere to go. His big eyes are always scanning the surroundings, except now, when he is dozing off. The orange light of the streetlamps spills into the car so that we can see Kilo fussing with keeping Angel warm. Angel coughs. KILO There you go. Come on. Come on. There you go. All right. Dammit! Kilo shivers. He turns the car on, turning up the heat. He looks at the fuel guge. It’s low. He taps it with his fingers. We see that his hand is held in a permanent clawlike form. KILO (CONT’D) Just a few minutes. He looks out at the night and puts his hands on Angel. KILO (CONT’D) Just a few minutes. FADE TO: TITLE CARD: TWO YEARS EARLIER INT. WILLIE BROWN CENTER - DAY Kilo is cutting heads. Most of the patrons are boys from the ages of 9-25. He holds court as he cuts. We see his charisma and energy, as do the boys, wrapped up in everything he says. EXT. OUTSIDE THE CENTER - DAY Kilo is walking out, saying goodbye to some older kids hanging out in the front. We stay back as spectators as we see him collapse. He is having a stroke. He cries out. We hear the sound of a baby crying.
Ricky smiles and puts his pillow over his head.MORNING Kilo awakes with a start. checking on Angel. As he begins to awake he nuzzles her. RICKY You better feed your baby. Chandra reluctantly gets out of bed. CHANDRA (playfully) Get off me. RICKY’S HOUSE . KILO (CONT’D) Damn. He moves to grab her breast. He rubs his hands in pain. RICKY You holdin’ the food.MORNING Ricky and Chandra are lying in bed. He looks confused. INT. KILO All right. Quickly he scans the scenario. Another month or so and she’s not gonna get any more of this food. CONTINUED: INT. We hear a baby cry. CHANDRA (CONT’D) Then you’re lookin’ at 17 years of getting up early to make pancakes. (CONTINUED) . Their kissing becomes more passionate. He stops himself just as he’s about to feel sorry for himself. Stop crying. you a hungry kid. She turns to him and they kiss. good morning. KILO’S CAR .2. They eat in silence. He opens a bag of chips for himself. He slowly settles himself into his surroundings. He picks Angel up and gives him some milk. They both chuckle. CHANDRA You better feed your baby.
BAYVIEW CORNER . you get over there and tell ‘em in person. He is clearly comfortable as a manager. He knows almost everyone he passes. I was gonna head home. Let’s go. talking gossip. Phone call ain’t gonna do it. go over to Anthony’s and tell those muthafuckas they gotta get off they’re asses. I gotta get to something. Let’s walk.3. Ricky manages the guys. man. (CONTINUED) . Dwayne. ‘Ey! And don’t call ‘em on your cell. THIRD STREET .DAY Intercut montage of Ricky and his crew kicking it on the corner. actually. CONTINUED: RICKY (muffled) I ain’t makin’ no pancakes. EXT. but reasonable. where you been? Man. I wanna call from him by nine o’clock tonight.DAY Kilo sees a friend he hasn’t seen in a while. He is tough. you gonna come swing by the park with me. They’re starting to make me itch. We see his natural ability to manage people. but you headin’ this way? KILO Yeah. shooting the shit. you hungry? You wanna get something to eat or something? MARQUIS Aw. RICKY ‘Ey. EXT. THIRD STREET . do me a favor. KILO Marquis.DAY Montage of Kilo walking the street with Angel in a stroller. but his heart is in a different kind of hustle. showing off the baby. Checking in with them. get this guy some rest before we go to work. man. EXT. see what’s happening over there.
I can’t believe this shit. Kilo turns the stroller and heads down the block. Not for no stupid mistakes. but I’m on parol. KILO Yeah. CONTINUED: MARQUIS Man. He gets about halfway down. looks back. MARQUIS Don’t you got another kid? KILO He’s around. this is my block. I’m not gonna leave this little guy. it’s great seein’ you. MARQUIS Yeah. stops. Imma cut out. he’s a great lookin’ kid. MARQUIS He keepin’ his head up? KILO (shakes his head) I don’t really know what he’s doin’ right now. The regret is washing over him. Suddenly he pulls out his cell phone. good talkin’ to you. He slams his palm down on the hood of a car. KILO I know. Can’t spend too much time in the same old places. Still in the hood. I can’t believe you got another kid. and grabs the stroller. RICKY That cat’s stupid. This is the shit that’s gonna hit. We’re gonna do this fast. well- (CONTINUED) . we see hints of pity and regret on his face. Here we go. man. The two get out and shut their car doors behind them. Fuck that mutherfucker. Dwayne in the passenger seat. RICKY’S CAR . Damn! Dwayne is not sure why Ricky is so angry. DWAYNE Yeah. Ricky pulls in to a driveway. DWAYNE ‘Ey. INT. that ain’t my pops. RICKY Nah man. This is the stuff we’ve been waiting for.DAY The two are coming back into the car from the deal. They’re bumping some hip-hop. RICKY This new shit is dope. RICKY Running back and forth so he can play his stupid fucking games I don’t give a shit what he is. man. Dwayne sees Kilo running with the stroller.CONTINUOUS Ricky’s driving. ain’t that your pops? Ricky looks over. I’m not dealing with his shit no more. Ricky looks a little frightened. RICKY’S CAR . RICKY (CONT’D) Pay attention. DWAYNE He’s a big client. The sound of the doors shutting becomes the sound of them opening as we jump cut to: INT.5. loudly.
man. you gotta hear this new cut! Naw. The clock reads 5:02. let’s get it going. Hello? He nods as he listens. scrambling to plug the phone in to the charger. yes. Okay. Fo’ sho. He exhales. He does. I accept. it glows to life. Aight. KILO (CONT’D) Yes. Chandra is clearly annoyed. she is dressed in her work clothes. Suddenly it rings. Yeah. (pause) (then tenderly) Hello? Hey girl. Dwayne shuts up. T! Yo. CONTINUED: RICKY I gotta make some calls. RICKY All right. We pull away from him. I’m droppin’ you back at Third. He waits. yo. KILO’S CAR . Ricky dials on his cell. I’ll hit you up tonight then. He stares at it. giving him space. man. He picks it up. you got a minute? Okay. He curses to himself as his hands fail to work the way he wants them to. I hear you man.6. KILO RICKY (CONT’D) (CONTINUED) .DAY Ricky opens the door in a burst. Ricky slams his cell phone on the dashboard. RICKY (CONT’D) Hey. RICKY’S HOUSE . how you doin’? INT. Yeah.DAY Kilo is in the driver’s seat with Angel on his lap. Fuck! INT. I could just bring it by right now if you got a minute? Fo’ sho. this is the real shit! I’m rollin’ by right now.
Defeated. I’m gonna be chewed out for being late again. both watching intently. he puts her into the car and straps her in. He picks up his daughter. Ricky is holding Kiara. let’s go home. EXT. things took longer than they should have. In the production booth a mixer sits at the board. listening to playback and rapping over it. PARKING LOT . she squirms and whines. RECORDING STUDIO . Finally Ricky gives up and excuses himself. RICKY Damn girl! Why you so finicky?! He looks at her. whatever your excuse is. and moves to the door. Ricky and another man stand behind him. but is trying to stay engaged with the other producer and the mixer as they monitor the sound. Kiara. He walks out of the room. .EVENING Ricky walks out of the studio with his daughter. which is all we hear. Another couple entourage guys lounge on the couch in the back. All right. He is clearly distracted by her restlessness.EVENING An MC is at the mic. They walk out and Ricky slams the door behind him. RICKY (CONT’D) Come here.7. about the same age as Angel. CONTINUED: CHANDRA Ricky! RICKY I know. CHANDRA Yeah. passing a spliff and checking their cell phones. but with a clear fatherly tenderness. let’s just get going. INT. He shakes his head. well.
KILO’S CAR .NIGHT The car is parked at the end of a cul de sac. There is a duffel bag on the driver’s seat. Ricky opens the fridge and pulls out some leftover food. overlooking a construction site. Kilo is asleep in the passenger seat. He bounces her around and talks to her to try to calm her down. RICKY’S HOUSE .NIGHT Angel is bundled up and asleep in his carseat behind the driver’s seat. RICKY’S HOUSE . lets his head fall back.NIGHT Ricky holds Kiara in the kitchen. We stay on Kilo’s face. he sets her down in her seat. and the San Francisco skyline looms beyond the Bayview rooftops. He sighs and closes his eyes. RICKY . The microwave beeps and we cut to black. She smiles and we see that she is greeted with Kiara asleep in Ricky’s arms on the couch. Then a rustle. We hear a clicking sound. INT. Kilo jumps up as glass is thrown in on top of him. After a beat. Kilo snores loudly. drinking herself to sleep. He chuckles.NIGHT The front door.NIGHT The moon sits over the neighborhood. He gives her a bottle. He looks at Kiara. the TV soundlessly lighting the room. He looks at his cell phone. INT. He puts it in the microwave and puts it on. As the microwave hums he leans against the counter and catches his breath. Relieved. She is crying. She looks tired. KILO’S CAR . a loud smash destroys the night. the doorbnob moves and Chandra comes in. INT.8. Damn. She drinks. ABOVE BAYVIEW . EXT. EXT. reclined back so that his head actually rests near Angel’s. Chandra walks in and gently picks Kiara up off of Ricky.
He tapes a jacket up to cover the hole left where the window was. EXT. KILO (CONT’D) CARJACKER . INT. looking around. you stupid motherfucker!! The carjacker is surprised. looking across the hood of the car at a carjacker. KILO Fuck you.CONTINUOUS The block is quiet again. He tries to comfort Angel. He suddenly realizes that Angel is crying. EXT.CONTINUOUS Kilo gets back into the car. It’s okay Angel. CARJACKER Fuck you! Piece of shit bum! Kilo runs around the front side of the car to get at the carjacker. It’s okay. Wanting to chase after the guy and hurt him. He pulls his blanket over them. KILO’S CAR . Shhhhh. but feeling scared for his baby. heart pumping. scared but angry. but he turns and runs off the other way. standing in the street. Shhhh. Angel lightly whines. KILO What the fuck!! Imma tear your head off. fuckin’ pussy! Come back here and let me tear your ugly ass head off! Fuck you! Kilo stands there for a moment. He holds Angel in his arms and leans back in his seat. KILO Shhh. He wipes some of the glass out the door. KILO’S CAR .9. baby. but pissed off. KILO’S CAR .CONTINUOUS Before another breath is taken Kilo is outside the passenger door.
She’ll keep me company. He grabs it. INT. He sighs. Kilo motions a greeting to the receptionist and walks by. RickyRICKY You think I wanna leave?! Shit. and flips it open. It’s my day off. CHANDRA . Ricky’s cell phone rings. He looks like he hasn’t slept at all There are promotional show posters all over the walls of the office. .10. I’ll make breakfast. He whispers in his ear. Chandra! You think I wanna go deal with these stupid . INT. RICKY I gotta go do this thing. RICKY (CONT’D) I’ll be back as soon as I can. RICKY’S HOUSE . CHANDRA Fine. He groans and rolls over to get out of bed. RICKY Hmm? Sleepin’. Bring me Kiara. Chandra grabs his leg. CHANDRA (sleepily) Ricky. RICKY (CONT’D) You don’t think I wanna stay with my two beautiful ladies. . asleep. Okay. Stay with us. fuck you think? Yeah.MORNING Ricky and Chandra are in bed. PROMOTIONS COMPANY .DAY Kilo wheels Angel’s stroller into a small office. He crawls over and kisses her.
Ricky gets out.DAY Kilo is putting up show posters and leaving postcards. yeah. man. He doesn’t let anyone he runs in to see how he really feels.11. RICKY (CONT’D) What’s your kid doing here? STEVE It’s my weekend to have him. We see them having a brief exchange. BAYVIEW SIDEWALK .DAY A car is parked at the far end of an old parking lot near some abandoned buildings. We see Ricky’s reaction to noticing this. feeling the exhaustion. a three year old boy. sitting up in the back passenger seat. stands against the car. focusing on getting his job done. He walks over to Steve. Steve. She’s just a baby! (CONTINUED) . around 30. Ricky is horrified by what he realizes he has become. man? Isn’t that your kid in there? RICKY Don’t you talk about my daughter. fo’ sho’. DESERTED PARKING LOT . much in contrast to that of his and his son’s. He looks up and sees Steve’s kid. EXT. The promotional images show a greatly enhanced vision of the urban lifestyle. RICKY (without looking up) Yeah. RICKY And this is how you wanna spend it? STEVE What the fuck. He gets a paper grocery bag out of the trunk. Now and then he pauses. EXT. Ricky is quickly counting money. a young man. STEVE Thanks. But he quickly brings himself up and out of it. watching them through the window. then we rack focus behind him to his sleeping daughter in his own car. Ricky’s car pulls up slowly.
All right. no. He looks like he could cry. He knows who it is. man. staring ahead. EXT. I know. CONTINUED: STEVE Not for long. KILO’S CAR .no. I just want . it isn’t . you do it!! RICKY STEVE (CONTINUED) . you a grown muthafucka.DAY Ricky is sitting in his parked car. man.okay. Yeah. I love you. He lays his head down on the seat for a moment and quickly falls asleep. Shit. He dials another number. Okay. It rings again.baby. We can see on his face and in his body that he hasn’t stopped moving all day and he is completely worn out. Hypocrite. He hangs up the phone. I .no. He puts him in his car seat.12. Hands him a rattle toy. He slams his door shut and peels away.DAY Kilo is walking back to the car with Angel’s stroller. RICKY’S CAR . well why don’t you just go pick it up yourself?! I don’t give a shit. baby. she’s fine. INT. Gruff. this time in a voice devoid of tenderness. RICKY I’m outta here. Ricky gets back in his car. can yeah. His phone rings. He reluctantly answers the phone. RICKY (CONT’D) Hello? Baby? Chandra. RICKY (CONT’D) Yeah. all business. listen. He stares out the window a moment. quickly. He takes a deep breath. baby. Fills his bottle with formula. I need to talk to you just for . He looks at the time. He changes Angel’s diaper. He presses “Ignore”. trying to get enough energy to finish out the day.
Ricky stands.NIGHT Kilo grunts as he pushes Angel’s stroller towards the front door. He looks in the window. RICKY He looks like you. BAYVIEW STREETS . not knowing who to turn to. RICKY’S HOUSE . (CONTINUED) . walks back. not knowing how to get out.DAY/NIGHT Day turns into night around the neighborhood. IN FRONT OF RICKY’S HOUSE . EXT. stops. KILO That’s your little bro. KILO Got his mom’s eyes.CONTINUOUS Ricky gets out and walks a couple steps. watching them. RICKY Yeah. BAYVIEW SIDEWALK . CONTINUED: He slams the phone down. He scrolls through the contacts for a moment. Ricky opens it. Life on the street montage or a time lapse shot of darkness falling. EXT. He opens the car door and grabs the phone. He get up there and knocks.NIGHT Chandra is in the living room playing with the two small kids. KILO He doesn’t look like nobody yet. Ricky and Kilo are in the kitchen. INT.13. Doesn’t look like me. He looks in the window at his phone on the seat of his car. EXT. RICKY Yep. then hits “Send”. then pauses. Kilo sits. They look at each other for a minute before Ricky steps aside to let Kilo and the baby in the door. Got my personality. He is reeling with frustration. He gets out of the car. at Kiara. Hi dad.
You just gotta figure out where to put ‘em. But. man. KILO What do you got goin’ on these days. pop. thanks for stayin’ a bit. Keith? I can make the couch up for you. CONTINUED: RICKY I need help. who hasn’t moved. Chandra takes Kiara away. uh. His shit is tight. He looks remorseful. KILO Yeah. he’s not getting much managing right now. uh. And we got an extra crib in back. anyway? RICKY I’m managing this MC. that would be really great. just like me.14. (CONTINUED) . suddenly feeling like he needs to get out of there. Kilo quickly gets up and rushes over. RICKY Hey. KILO (CONT’D) I gotta put this little guy to bed. pop. KILO You got people skills. He may be lookin’ to drop me. Angel starts crying. sure. He checks his cell phone. be back in a few. and Ricky watches Kilo be a father with Angel. But. Kilo looks over at Ricky. Thank you. CHANDRA You gonna stay here. KILO I hear you’re managing some other guys too. Ricky just looks back. RICKY I don’t want to be doin’ that no more. I gotta get out.
Chandra puts her arms around him from behind.15. baby. CONTINUED: (2) KILO Hey. RICKY I just don’t . RICKY’S LIVING ROOM . He has one kid on each side of him and cartoons are on the TV. KILO Naw. But you can let him help you now. Ricky walks out. Ricky sits down on the couch next to them. RICKY You sleep okay? (CONTINUED) . .MORNING Ricky and Chandra are getting washed up and dressed. CHANDRA I know. RICKY She need a change? Kilo turns and sees Ricky standing behind them. you’re doin’ me a favor. RICKY’S BATHROOM . I know it’s hard. He couldn’t help you then. He looks dressed and ready to go. He laughs heartily. .MORNING Kilo is eating cereal on the couch. CHANDRA I’m really glad he’s here. I got her already. and you don’t have to forget about that. Ricky puts his face in his hand. He told me after you left that he could even help out with rent if he stayed longer. You could put more time on the music. INT. And I think he really wants to. KILO (to the kids) You guys see that? Crazy ass squirrel. INT.
He pauses and looks down at Kiara. Kilo looks back. Kilo nods. I could take her too. RICKY I got. uh. Man. RICKY (CONT’D) RICKY RICKY . RICKY (CONT’D) Thanks. She just needs her toys and blanket. KILO I got you. Ricky gets up. she can set you up with her stuff. Hey pop. we got a meeting today with a promoter. well. RICKY Where you been stayin’? KILO Nowhere. KILO Hey. Yeah. man. He grabs his jacket and walks to the door. Go do your thing. RICKY Before Chandra leaves. Ricky walks out the door.16. really. Yeah? KILO No worries. CONTINUED: KILO Better than I have in a long time. I take this guy around with me for my job.
