Title: Study & Observation the MT (HEAVY) SHOP Vertical Lathe
The vertical lathe is one of the most important machines in any workshop. It is called so as the axis of the lathe chuck is vertical. Main parts of a vertical lathe machine:1) main gear box 2) Slide gear box (carriage) – horizontal + vertical 3) Lead screw (gear box) 4) Turret 5) Feed rod gear box – horizontal + vertical 6) Tail stock (gear box) 7) Ram 8) Tool post 9) Four jaw independent lathe chuck 10) Hard wheel Capacity:In a vertical lathe machine any lathe operation can be performed for a job where diameter is up to 1300 mm. Its minimum speed is 5 r.p.m and maximum speed is 250 r.p.m. It operates at 110 volt. It does not operate properly at 125 volt. Operations that can be performed by a vertical lathe machine are: outside turning, facing, parting, drilling, taper boring and straight boring. Advantages:•In a turret many cutting tools can be attached at a time. •As the job can be placed vertically any heavy job can be performed in a vertical lathe. Limitations :•Thread can not be cut as the dividing index can not be attached in a vertical lathe machine. And, Square or hexagonal job can not be machined.

Jig Boring Machine
Parts of a jig boring machine 1) Automatic feed 2) Rotary table 3) Surface base 4) Horizontal table (right and left) 5) Dividing head Specification Boring spindle Operation Facing, drilling, reaming and boring Capacity Maximum diameter: 1200 mm Advantages •Precision work can not be performed. •Angle accuracy can be accomplished. •It can be used for large production. Limitations •Hard metal can not be cut as because there is no grinding wheel. •During operation of machine, the spindle gets jam because of the dust cast iron. So, it should be cleaned before using lubricating oil.

Horizontal Boring Machine (new model)
Machine consists of high weight capacity. Also internal thread can be cut by new model horizontal boring machine which can not be performed by old model horizontal boring machine. Main parts of a horizontal boring machine 1) Gear box 2) Head stock 3) Lead screw (horizontal) 4) Lead screw (vertical) 5) Tail stock gear box 6) Table & gear box Functions Facing, boring, drilling, reaming, internal thread cutting and gear cutting (large level gear, spar gear & worm gear). Capacity Maximum weight: 5 ton Maximum diameter: 1500 mm. Advantages •The job can be small or large whatever it is. •Precision job can be performed.

Horizontal Boring Machine (old model)
Old horizontal boring machine consists of the same parts as new horizontal boring machine. Capacity Maximum weight: 1.5 ton Operation The same operations can be performed by old horizontal boring machine as the new one except internal thread cutting operation. Limitations

•Internal thread can not be cut. And, Its capacity is low. Page-26

Hydraulic Planer
A planer is a large machine that is designed for producing flat surfaces on a piece of work. Main parts of a hydraulic planar 1) Bed 2) Lever starting (automotive) 3) Head 4) Motor 5) Carriage 6) Tool past 7) Table 8) Oil box 9) Switch box 10) Lead screw 11) Feed rod 12) Grinding head (grinding attachment) 13) Ram Capacity Maximum weight: 1 ton Maximum height: 2.5 ft. Maximum length: 6 ft. Operation Slot cutting, gear pinion- angle preparing, grinding and parting Advantages •It is designed to do jobs that would be too large or too awkward for a shaper. •Grinding can be done by attachment. •By level protector hexagonal job can be obtained. Limitations

•Only helical, spar, bevel gear can be cut. But worm or spiral gear can not be cut. •Drilling can not be done. Page-27 Main difference between a shaper and a planer A planer is designed with a stationary housing for holding tool-heads and a table with a reciprocating movement for holding the work, thus, the work is moved against the cutting tool. A shaper differs from a planer in that the work is held stationary and the cutting tool is moved across the work. In a planer feed is given in the cutting tool but in shaper the feed is given in the job. Railway gear Tool bits that are used in a hydraulic planer are:: 1) High speed cutting tool, 2) White bit, and 3) Carbide tip Mechanical planer The difference between mechanical planer and hydraulic planer is that the mechanical planer is operated gear. Mechanical planer has the same parts a hydraulic planer. Its operation is also same as hydraulic planer. Capacity Maximum length: 8 ft. Maximum height: 3 ft. Central Lathe Machine
The lathe is one of the most important machines in any workshop. The initial objective when using a lathe was to be able to remove material from the outside of logs of wood while they were revolving, thus producing a cylindrical shape that was uniform in its diameter. The removing of material from a piece of revolving work is still the main purpose of a lathe but it can be used to enable a workman to do many other jobs as well. Principal parts of a lathe machine 1) Bed 2) Headstock 3) Tailstock 4) Carriage 5) Feed mechanism 6) Thread-cutting mechanism 7) Tool post 8) Live centre 9) Dead centre 10) Spindle. The machinery operations that may be performed on a lathe: straight turning, taper turning, facing, straight boring, taper boring, knurling, external threading, internal threading, reaming, and undercutting.
