The Revelator¶s Rhythm ± Why was the Rider of the Red Horse standing under Myrtle Trees?

The Book of Zechariah opens with an early mould of post-exilic Jerusalem. The Book soon omits several centuries, as prophetic books do. Long since desolated Jerusalem, is restored and reasonably peaceful. Disaster strikes. These are the days of the Greek rule and many Jews have apostasised. They have joined the ranks of Antiochus Epiphanes to plunder the temple and exterminate the faithful steadfast citizens of Jerusalem. Zechariah mentions four ³spirits (winds) of the heavens´ that go their separate way, four chariots. Here God sends a ³valiant man´ to deliver Israel. The saviour was Judas Maccabees, son of Mattathias of Modin, an Ephramite. And he went forth conquering and to conquer. Here is the typical white horse and his rider, Messiah, Faithful and True. The white horse, in the days of the kingdom of the Jews, was in Juda hence his mention in Zech. 1. The grisled horses also go forth towards the south country. Zech. 6:6. The bay sought to walk to and fro through the earth. So they did. Zech. 6:7. The black horse does not appear in Zech. 1. His rider, in going to Jerusalem¶s enemy, could offer nothing but famine to the people. Now to the red horse with his rider. The Book of Zechariah commences with the red horse already in Jerusalem, standing among the myrtle trees - ³a man riding a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were the red horses, speckled and white.´ ± Zech.1:8. That is where he stayed ± with the myrtle tress, to help the conqueror. Unlike the other riders, the red horse rider, is not mentioned as going anywhere in Zech. 6. This short summary of Zechariah¶s horses should hopefully, unsure a clearer understanding of the first four seals of Revelation 6 (see other articles). So we must understand how Zechariah is written and how it relates to the symbolic family relationships of the O.T. So, why was the rider of the red horse standing among the myrtle trees in the postexilic Jerusalem? The answer is that he was waiting for his bride.

Post captive Jerusalem was the capital of the Kingdom of the Jews. A new era was dawning. The man under the myrtle trees represented the new kingdom thus he stayed in Jerusalem. His older brother was a personification of the pre-captive kingdom of Judah, or the last seven kings of Judah. The older brother had died of apostasy. But his wife, the people of Judah, (the woman, the life-giver) was taken captive to Babylon. Now the Jews were returning to Jerusalem. These people figuratively speaking, were to be the red horse-rider¶s bride, according to the ancient descriptive law. The O.T. has two essential temple periods ± preBabylonian captivity and post-Babylonian captivity. The confirmation from the old testament type which there is spelt-out as a procedural family law ³If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband¶s brother shall go unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband¶s brother unto her. And it shall be, that the first born which she beareth, shall succeed in the name of his father which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.´ Deut. 25:5, 6. The writers of Zechariah skillfully depicted this continuance by the brother awaiting his bride amongst the myrtle tress. The Revelator¶s was using the ancient theological-philosophical infrastructure to irradiate life. Such imagery made the abstract concrete to the reader and leads to a new enlightenment stressing elevation of human concept and pure spirituality impacting on the historical objective. Some would say the abstract made concrete in the mind. The O.T. law of a brother succeeding upon the death of his brother is the pattern deployed in all scripture scenes. Often the importance of the first born is stressed to confirm that continuance within all processes. Writers use literary artistry, allegory, legend, poetry, fiction and metaphor to achieve this knowledge. This pattern is less well understood by those looking for absolutism. Creativity is always passed on through the first born so to speak. This way of thinking reveals that mind is the light that God causes to shine through darkness of every age. Soon there would be a wedding, a great atonement or reconciliation, followed by the feast of tabernacles. As a new Jerusalem, the city of peace, would be reborn. This celebration initiates the new rule, the Davidian prodigy redeemed. Presented here is Revelation¶s type of ³the marriage supper of the lamb.´ Are you ready for the marriage festivities?
