The Victorian Era 1830-1901 The fashions of the Victorian Era were both very elaborate and restrictive on the bodies of those who wore them. Queen Victoria ruled England. The rise of the economy allowed the common man to afford more elaborate clothing. Cloth making was made easier and cheaper during the industrial boom of this time. The uniqueness of this time period‟s fashions set the stage for the styles to come. Dresses were the social standard for women. They had a conservative cut. Corsets were always worn. Edwardian period 1901-1914 King Edward VII, after whom the Edwardian period is named Factors Influencing Fashion Trends (19001920) Political Influences World War I: More women in workforce. Practical, comfortable clothes and shorter skirts (above ankle) where worn. Military cuts and Trench Coats where some of the other style. Cultural Influences: Automobiles hit the road; Women go to war and work. Fashion Influences: Modern fashion shows begin. Art, ballet and film impact designers in a large way.

Between the War 1920-30 The period between the two World Wars, often considered to be the Golden Age of French fashion, was one of great change and reformation. Carriages were replaced by cars, princes and princesses lost their crowns, and haute couture found new clients in the ranks of film actresses, and the wives and daughters of wealthy industrialists.

The 1920s brought fashion into the modern era. Referred to as the “Roaring Twenties”, women began to wear skirts and dresses that were comfortable rather than constricting. And men dressed in more casual suits rather than the

usage of lace. Late 70s again was influenced through music. fashion became a large statement of an individual. the introduction of nylons and the use of the zipper. Dixit Fashion Evolution. and showed their discontent with the mainstream society 1930s known as the “Stylish Thirties” was the return of a more contemporary lady like look whose main stylistic feature for this period was the emphasis on the shoulders. Icons of this era were Farrah Fawcett. and John Travolta. Flappers were women who dressed in short skirts. A line skirts to emphasize a women‟s waist. • Incorporated society of London fashion designers was found in 1942 • Even within the utility scheme there were couture garments for those who could afford them but they still use coupons. The 1940s continued this look while experimenting with more synthetic fibers. The designs of Christian Dior was largely influential to the style of the period as his designs came after the war and emphasized women‟s figures something that hadn‟t been done in a while. Marilyn Monroe. Brigette Bardot. The 1940s and 1950s Because of rationing. Fashion trends of the 50s included the ever famous Audrey Hepburn little black dress. Women rarely wore pants during these decades. 1940: General wartime scene of drabness and uniforms. bare legs instead of stockings. as well as hairstyles which included the beehive and the classic tight curls. shaped fitted jackets. With the Hippie movement in the late 60s and traveling into the early 1970s. With the summer of love.Pg 2 . The most defining style of the 20s was the Flapper. Jasmine S. Disco fashion was introduced with high platforms. and hats for both women and men. Bathing suits were also a huge trend as traveling became part of North Americans Lifestyle. Carey Grant. tie die and baby doll tops were huge trends. smoked. Major fashion icon was skinny model Twiggy. flashy colours and tight clothing for both women and fashion. 1950-1970 The 1950s was the “Glamour Decade”. light airy fabrics. Icons included. women‟s clothes had to have less fabric during World War II. This led to short. With the rise of new music and Italian inspired mod fashion the 1960s was a time for change in the fashion world.

we see new trends forming but we also see a huge comeback of many of styles from the previous fashion decades. Audrey Hepburn‟s tiny black dress.Pg 3 . Accessorizing also became a huge trend in the 80s. However the present has definitely become a collection of trends from previous decades. • “Green fashion” (clothes made from organic materials) has also seen an emergence Jasmine S. the 1950‟s hairstyle and so many more. 1990 to Present… From the 1990‟s to the present. Rock music of the 90s had an influence in style including the creation of the „grunge‟ and „emo‟ scene. Ray ban sunglasses. to hair pins. Dixit Fashion Evolution.1980: The 1980s were full of emerging trends that came and went. Lots of glitz! A major icon was of course Madonna. From earrings. 80s accessories. From big shoulder pads to even larger hair. the 80s were all about making a large statement. to fishnet stockings accessories were what made the outfit. the flat shoe and the scarf or pashmina that goes with every outfit not just your out door wear. especially it was flashy and bold in colour. high fashion gym wear. whose fashion style was copied by thousands. New trends also include dark denim jeans especially the famous skinny jeans. hippie inspired bohemian dresses.
