In the early 80s women everywhere either sported the Pat Benatar look or the Olivia Newton John exercise look. Their attire was very similar, with both spandexes, braided headbands and shorts no fuss hair. Women everywhere adopted this no frills look because they could make the transition from workout clothes to rocker clothes with minimal effort. Pat Benatar had the rocker edge, while Olivia Newton John was coming out of her Grease era and into her Physical stage. Both women were big trendsetters before 80s fashion really took off! Fashion in the 80s was catapulted to a whole new era when Madonna came onto the scene full force in late 1983 to 1984. The Material Girl sent mothers everywhere hurrying to cover their daughters who rebelled in half naked clothes against wholesome clothing with Madonna’s trade mark, lacey see thru blouses, shades and short skirts. If you look at many of the trend setters today they are also wearing similar items.
Leather jackets, big messy hair, big fringe, lace gloves, waistcoats, lots of bangles and necklaces, high top boots, one shoulder, blue eye shadow, Neon colors, leg warmers, colored leggings, one shoulder jersey sweaters, body suits, sweatbands were very popular during this era.
Black was back, prints were on everything including pants and shoes, and hair and makeup were thick, radical, and wild. The fashionable silhouette was top-heavy – big, baggy shirts with tapered jeans. Leather and lace came together and colors took on a strangely bright, luminescent hue when neon accessories became a raging fad.
Black is back, prints are on everything including pants and shoes. Fashion now is big, baggy shirts with tapered or skinny jeans. Leather and lace come together and colors take on a strangely bright, luminescent hue. Sound familiar? This is because these trends that you see everyday were also seen in the 1980’s. When it comes to fashion, mainly all new styles and trends come from previous decades with a little twist. In 2000 we are slightly reliving the 80’s through their style of dress. This year they are bringing back the leather jacket, lace, tight skinny jeans, bright colors, loose fitting and one shoulder tops, colored leggings, shoulder pads, and many accessories. In the 80’s they wore many bangles and large jewelry, where as today it is popular to wear multiple bangles with large earrings or a necklace. Its strange to see how fashion has changed over time, but fabulous to know you can rock something your mom did when she was your age!
“ Bringing back style from previous generations is simply a way of defining yourself. ”
