1.0 PURPOSE

This procedure is to ensure that all CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings are produced with
standard methods. The standardization of the CAD document will facilitate drawing production,
coordination and ensure uniformity.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure applies to all engineering work produced on CAD by the SNC-Lavalin
Engineers and Constructors using AutoCAD Software, unless it is otherwise indicated in the
Project instructions. It covers the preparation, coordination and hard copy output of all CAD
drawings.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

It is the responsibility of all personnel working with the CAD system to adhere to the contents of
this instruction.

The Lead Discipline Engineers should be responsible for drawings file management and to
ensure that the Drawing standards have been adhered to before a drawing leaves his or her
department.

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 General

The Engineering Manager must approve preparation of drawings with any other CAD software.
The preparation of CAD drawings must follow the procedures outlined in this work instruction.
The work instruction has been prepared to provide a more detailed description of how CAD
design files are to be prepared to produce drawings that are clear, consistent and legible for
the all project work.

All elements within the CAD design files must be placed straight and true and to real
coordinates within the design plane. Prior to all projects started on the CAD system the CAD
Administrator is responsible for setting the coordinate system and project datum.

4.2 Starting AutoCAD 2008

To enter a design session after logging in to Windows, click on the AutoCAD 2008 icon on your
desktop. This will start AutoCAD with the ‘sli2008’ profile. If the profile is incorrect, please see
Section 4.6 on Profiles.

4.3 Drawing Setup

When starting a drawing, a template file must be used according to the project number and
paper size. Upon selecting the template file, the drawing will need to be saved according to
the project naming code instructions and knowing what type of CAD file will be used to
collaborate with other departments.

4.3.1 Drawing Template

When starting a new drawing, the standard template must be used.

AutoCAD border template drawings have been created for starting new drawings. A template
has been developed for “Paperspace” and “Modelspace” environments. These templates are
stored in the “N:\ACADLIB\SLI2008\SUPPORT\TEMPLATES” directory. To access the
templates, when creating a new drawing, select Templates from the AutoCAD start-up dialog
box. A list of all SLI standard templates drawings is listed.

For dimensional drawings such as equipment layouts, steel plans etc. the paperspace
template should be used. For non-dimensional drawings such as schematics and single line
diagrams the modelspace template should be used. The border template file name consists of
up to ten characters, followed by “.dwt". The first one or two characters will indicate the sheet

Do not store borders in the project directories. The master borders are kept in the
projects may require “N:\ACADLIB\SLI2008\SUPPORT\TEMPLATE”. A master border has also been created for
more detailed edits to re-insertion into existing drawings. This has been created to update borders on existing
made (such as Fenco drawings, if the border has been modified. This drawing is named by the sheet size followed
Projects and Client
Standards Projects) by a six digit project number with a “.dwg” file extension. All borders are started as templates
into the drawing and should not be inserted into a drawing as a block. See Appendix A –
Border Template.

The drawing must also saved with the correct project as per section, for example, 000476-
000045d20000.dwg. (Refer to Section 4.4 – Drawing Coding Structure)

If a border is being inserted into an existing drawing, the drawing title block data should be
inserted as a block in the lower right hand corner of the title block. This block is used to enter
all drawing titles, revisions and approvals. The block for the title information is named
“A0titleinfo” as A0 is the paper size of the border and the revision block is named
“SNCSTAMP”. After inserting these into the drawing then enter the title block data. This is
further covered in Section 4.5 - SNC-Lavalin Drawing Stamps and Title Block Information.

4.3.2 Types of CAD Files (Drawings and Models)

CAD files can be grouped into 2 categories: Drawings and Models

Drawings represent the document, ready for plotting. It simulates a sheet of paper where the
plot composition is performed taking into account plot constraints such as scale, border, paper
size. In AutoCAD this is known as paper-space.

Models consist of graphics (lines, shapes, texts, dimensioning, hatching, etc.) used to
represent the layout for each discipline: piping, architecture, equipment, structure. Models are
always drawn at full scale 1:1 and they are attached in drawings as Reference files.

The advantages of working with this MODEL & DRAWING structure are:
- One model can be attached in more than one drawing (For example, the architecture
could be viewed as a background in any other drawing where it is required.)
- Any graphics that are updated in the model will also be reflected in all drawings that
reference that model.
- Minimizes the occurrence of having duplicate copies of a single model.

4.4 SNC-Lavalin Inc. Drawing Naming Conventions

4.4.1 Drawing Code Structure

The file naming convention is a derivative of the actual drawing number indicated in the title
block and on the drawing list. The drawing file naming consists of 18 characters, followed by a
“.dwg". The first 6 characters indicate the project number. The following 4 characters represent
the Area. The next 4 characters represent the discipline and document type. The final 4
characters are a sequential number as per the drawing list. The electronic file name must be
identical to the drawing number as shown below.

Drawing file naming convention:

PPPPPP 0000 42 DD 0001. DWG

Project No. Extension

4.6.2 Work Spaces

Workspaces in AutoCAD 2008 - can really help you be more productive (when set up
properly). A Workspace is basically a snapshot of your User Interface (UI), which consists of
your toolbars and the positioning of them.

Do you find that you use different toolbars in paperspace than you do in modelspace? Most of
us work with the same old UI day in and day out because it's not worth the hassle to change
things around (and this setup is typically pretty overcrowded). Now you can streamline your UI
for the way you prefer working at different times. For example, you might have one workspace
for 3D Modeling, one for paperspace, and one for modelspace. Each of these workspaces will
consist of different toolbars depending on how you choose to customize it.

Creating a Workspace is simple...you set up your UI as you prefer. From the Workspace toolbar
select Save Current As...

Give it a name and you now have your first workspace assigned! Since they are easy to get to
from your workspace toolbar you can easily flip between them whenever needed.
Example: Some people will have a Workspace for PaperSpace that consists of annotation
toolbars, and viewport scale factor toolbar, etc.

Manual Method (cont’d): As shown on the previous page, manually importing layer files is
performed by simply clicking Format Æ Layer States Manager Æ “Import…” Button to import
layer files (*.las files). You can also access the Layer States Manager by typing “LMAN” into
the console.

Note: For those who used the LMAN console command in AutoCAD2006, it is
important to know that this command previously accessed the “Layer Manager”,
which was used to import and export *.lay files. Now in AutoCAD2008, LMAN opens
the “Layer States Manager”, which operates with *.las files.

Remember, the SLI standard layers (*.DWG files) are stored in:

4.10 Pen tables (Plot Style Tables)

SNC-Lavalin Pen tables: The pen table “byobject.ctb” must be used for plotting by object
weight. This method of plotting by layer weight will be used to achieve line weights on printed
drawings. For a complete list of layer weight assignments see APPENDIX ‘B’ – STANDARD
DISCIPLINE LAYERS AND SYMBOLGY.

Some project template borders are not plotted by object, and include a special pen table chart
as a guide. If the project that you are working on does not include a pen table chart, you can
insert the chart by block. If available in your project, the pen table block would be located in:
N:\acadlib\ProjectName\ProjectName_pentable.dwg.

If the project pen table is not in the directory, please contact Data Automation
(Tor-CADD.2233@snclavalin.com).

4.11 Standard Directory Structure

Here at SNC-Lavalin we follow a STRICT FORMAT for our project directories ( ). Figure 4.10.1
displays an example of how a project directory is setup on the network P:\ drive. Under a project’s
main directory, which is titled by the six digit project number, there are the respective discipline
directories (i.e. Architecture, Automotive, Building Services, Civil, etc.) Each disciple is further divided
into sub- directories. These are the department areas, in, out, reference, and sketch directories. This
preserves all references between disciplines, also producing alternative layouts. Directories should
not be created below this level, which contain files that are referenced by other disciplines. Sub-
directories must be named in a clear and concise manner. Spaces, and “&” symbols are not permitted
in directory names.

NOTE: As seen in the diagram on the next page under the ‘arch’ directory, all disciplines will follow this standard
directory structure, with exceptions of the Auto, Mech, and PID directories. For instance, note that the ‘mech’
directory contains an additional directory named ‘tank’ included with the other standard folders, while the ‘pid’
directory ONLY has a ‘ref’ directory (PID is meant to be simply an extension of the Piping directory).

Figure 4.10.1 – SNC Lavalin Standard Directory Structure

Design drawings are to be created, produced, and completed on the network. All files must be kept in the
department’s area directory with the exception of schematic type drawings and loop diagrams. Those should be
placed in the ‘sketch’ folder. If alternative layouts are required, the current layout MUST be stored in a sub-
directory, while the drawings in the area directory become the active alternative.

NOTE: Custom named sub-folders can ONLY be created within the department area folders and not directly in
the project or discipline folders.
In this figure there are a few subdirectories that have been created such as “Archiving” and “AutoCAD FilesOLD”.
THEY ARE IN THE INCORRECT LOCATION. The correct way would be to put these sub-directories into the
respective department area folders. If they do not relate to any of the department areas they should be placed in
the “SKETCH” directory.

If you need to choose a pen table, select the pull down menu and choose your desired pen
table. In all AutoCAD versions we eliminated the ability of users to create their own pen table
due to complications that arise when other users try to print their drawings. If you need a pen
table that is not on the list, please contact Data Automation support.
Now choose your paper size, drawing orientation and scale. Make sure you window your
drawing or set the limits.

Click OK.

4.13 Creating PDF

There are 4 methods for creating a PDF using AutoCAD.

1. The simplest method is using ‘PDF-Xchange 3.0’ which can be used exactly as the Laser
Printing instructions above substituting the ‘PDF-Xchange 3.0’ as the plot device. Once

you’ve set up the page per your needs, make sure the drawing is set to Landscape and
click OK. A file dialog box will appear asking for a filename and location for the PDF.

2. The second method is using the Acroplot.pc3 file. This driver uses PDF-Xchange 3.0 but it
is configured to default to B size 11 x 17. Click file Æ plot and choose Acroplot.pc3

3. The third method is using the adobe distiller program, which is only necessary if the ‘PDF-
Xchange’ printer is absent from your system. The following instructions will guide you
through the process of creating a PDF this way:
Open file
Click File -> plot. Change the Plotter Configuration to PostScript Level 2 pc3. This is a
postscript PDF in colour. To change the Post Script from Colour to Black and White, select
the pen table ACAD.CTB or BYOBJECT.CTB. Make sure the plot to file is checked on and
the file location is N:\PLOTTING\PDF\IN. Make sure the paper size is 11” x 17” or any
other you need and landscape. The scale should be Scaled to Fit and the Plot offset
“Center the plot” should be checked ON. Click on Full preview to make sure your drawing
is centered and correct paper size. Click OK. To pick up your drawing go to
N:\PLOTTING\PDF\OUT.

4. The fourth method is using the Acroplot palettes from AutoCAD. This is the best method to
create a PDF with AutoCAD because it has a more intelligent setups and options, whether
you’re creating a single PDF or batch of PDFs. For more details about Acroplot such as
batch PDF creation please refer to procedure:

use DesignCenter to streamline your drawing process by copying and pasting other content,
such as layer definitions, layouts, and text styles between drawings. To open DesignCenter
type ADCENTER command or use the tools menu. With DesignCenter, you can:

• Browse for drawing content such as drawings or symbol libraries on your computer, on
a networked drive, and on a web page

• View definition tables for named objects such as blocks and layers in any drawing file
and then insert, attach, or copy and paste the definitions into the current drawing

• Update (redefine) a block definition

• Create shortcuts to drawings, folders, and Internet locations that you access
frequently. Add content such as xrefs, blocks, and hatches to a drawing

• Open drawing files in a new window
