Welcome to the third edition of Pump It for ’07 as we take on the Lavington Panthers from Melrose Park. I must say its great to have Pump It back again and credit must go to those handsome editors, whoever they may be, and in particular the printers who are churning out some great copy, love those colour photos, keep up the good work guys ! Well, moving on… after some solid performances and resounding wins over the past few weeks against Wangaratta and Benalla we enter the wet season as the much wanted rain begins to fall and the jackets, scarves and beanies come out of the closet. Speaking of Jackets its great to see so many Albury United spray jackets again this year and it is also great to hear that due to popular demand our “merchandise man” Marty Chambers has decided to re-open orders for the spray jackets for one last time in 2007. So anyone interested in a new jacket or those looking to add to their jacket collection make sure you see Marty ASAP so you don’t miss out. (See below for details) Once again I will use my space for a further plea for volunteers to assist in the canteen. Julie tells me she has been getting good numbers so thanks to all those (normally mothers!) who have helped out so far and please pass on the message to any others who haven’t yet helped out that we could use their assistance in the Canteen for our home games. Remember its just 1 hour of your time on Sunday’s to help out that’s all we ask. Also, thanks to Derek O’Connell and Cade Webb for up-dating our website every week, with results and ladders. They’ve been doing a great job keeping us in touch with ‘cyber world’!!! So if you have a chance, jump on there at some time www.alburyunited.com and check it out!!! Following from this it would be great to see some of the fathers down early to help set up the grounds for home games, particularly any U10’s or U16’s parents considering your kids play the first games for the day on each of the grounds, the current crew do a great job considering how early on a Sunday it is, but I’m sure they could use a few extra helpers each week to put up nets, signs, ropes etc. They generally start at around 7am so
if you can help just drop down around then and lend a hand, it would be much appreciated. Good luck to all against the Panthers ! The Pres’
Canteen & Grounds
With the announcement that Leigh and Julie Christian are looking to take a break from their Canteen manager and Grounds man duties next year we are now on the look out for anyone who may be interested in taking on these roles for 2008. These are two of the most important roles for our club when hosting home games and Julie and Leigh have got both roles down to a fine art over the last few years and are willing to assist/train any people interested in taking over these roles for 2008. Primarily the Canteen Manager is responsible for the running of our canteen for home games, therefore it is for 12 Sunday’s a year. The canteen manager is responsible for buying and preparing the food and drinks for sale on the Sundays and monitoring the income and expenses of the canteen. It should be noted that this position does not need to be filled by just one person, in fact the club has found and Julie herself fully endorses, two people taking on the role in order to share the load. Julie has done an outstanding job over the past few years and has worked hard to make our canteen one of the best in the Alb/Wodonga area providing a wide range of top quality food for our patrons. If anyone is interested please see Julie for a full run down on how it all operates. The Grounds man has the primary function of marking both of our grounds ready for home games on Sunday’s. The line marking is traditionally done on the Saturday afternoon before our home games so the lines are clearly visible come the Sunday game. The club has a purpose made line marker which is simple and easy to use and Leigh is happy to show anyone who may be interested in how it all works. Clearly there is a long way to go this year but on behalf of the Committee and the Club the Pump It editors would like to thank Leigh and Julie for their massive contribution to our club over the past decade or more, we are happy to hear you will both be staying around the club in particular with Leigh now able to focus more on his coaching and Julie able to focus more on supporting Mike and Leigh jnr. If anyone is interested in these positions now is the time to tap into Leigh and Julie’s knowledge, remember it doesn’t have to be just one person if there are two people who can share any of these roles please let Leigh, Julie or a Committee member know.
Many of you will note the new ground signage behind the goals in front of the hill on ground one. Les “Chief” O’Brien has been working hard over the off season recruiting sign sponsors for the
club and as you can see the hard work has paid off with the first 5 signs now on display during home games. Uncle Les is still on the hunt for further sponsors so if you or someone you know is interested please see a Committee member or get in touch with Les for further details. Keep up the good work Chief.
The Jindera Crew
This week we take a look at one of the founding members of our Jindera Crew, Kel Smith ! Kel and his family have been amongst a number of other Jindera families that have been massive supporters of our club over a number of years now and have been a major driver in promoting Albury United in Jindera and helping create our “Jindera crew”. The editors of Pump It would like to acknowledge and thank all of these families and felt it was time Kel and the Smith family’s contributions were given due mention. Kel has coached at all junior levels in the club, he is the current U16 coach and his son Sam and daughter Emily both play for United, Kel’s beautiful wife Judy is the lisencee for our canteen. Kel is always at senior training helping set up and take down goals, nets and anything else required and then after training acts as the Jindera taxi as he carts a car full of smelly third graders home each week, he is at the ground early each Sunday setting up the ground with the help of our other early morning grounds men (including Col Johnson, Iain Dalitz, Glenn O’Connell, Chris Muller) and then after coaching acts as Marshall. Through his Jindera based business, Kel’s Cabinets, he has sponsored a number of junior teams. In addition to this he lets his lovely daughter Emily go out with one of the seniors most notorious bad boys BT Poynter and also takes on the unenviable task of employing two of our seniors in Sammy Plunkett and Caleb “Roy” Martin, Kel and the Smith’s are quiet achievers (well maybe Sam isn’t so quiet!) and epitomize the spirit of our club and on behalf of the club the editors of Pump It would like to thank Kel and the Smith family for building the Albury United name amongst the Jindera Crew.
