Quadratic equations that can be written in the form x2 = k
can be solved by applying the following properties:
1. If k > 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x =

3. If k < 0, then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.
The method of solving the quadratic equation x2 = k is
called extracting square roots.

Daily Living
(Solution: Let a=Ana’s age, a+5=Riza’s present
age
Representing by table,
Present Future (4 years) Past (5 years)
Ana a a+4 a-5
Riza a+5 a+5+4 or a+9 a+5-5 or a
Equation:
(Riza’s age 4 years from now)+(Ana’s age 5 years
ago)=51
(a+9) + (a-5) = 51
Solving the equation,
a2 + 4a -45 = 51
a2 +4a = 96
2
a +4a +4 = 96+4
a2 +4a +4= 100
(a+2)2 = 100
a + 2 =± 10
A =± 10-2
a=8 or a = -12

Note: The equation a2 + 4a -96 = 0 could have been

solved by factoring. We used the method of completing
the square to illustrate that the method is applicable to
any quadratic equation.
