What's In The Name ?

A business ' success is dependent on their name, for instance, Wal-mart's success is the prices , Sears' success is due to the fact of how long they've been in business, and people feel confident in an established name. How about a man's name...my name hasn't always been associated with peace and love and kindness and gentleness or slow to anger....but with the help of God it is now. Now, there is one name that has never had a complaint filed at the better business bureau, there's one name that has never had to settle out of court for bad customer service. There's only one name that truly means satisfaction is truly guaranteed, and as far as I know there is only one name that really means comfort. That name is God. Today we are going to look at some of the names of God and see how He can be all things to all people. Psa 148:13"Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory [is] above the earth and heaven. In the Old Testament, a name was not only identification, but an identity as well. Many times a special meaning was attached to the name. Names had, among other purposes, a description of the person. Throughout Scripture God reveals Himself to us through His names. When we study the names that He reveals to us in the Bible, understand who God really is. The meanings behind God's names reveal the personality and nature of God towards man. The first name is El Shaddai or (Lord God Almighty) Gen 17:1. And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I [am] the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. To me, this is the scripture that speaks to me that God is my all. Everything and anything that I need God to be He will be. If I need God to comfort me , He's my comforter, if I need God to heal me, He's my healer, and what if I just need God. You know what i'm talking about, when we're all alone and its just you and you just need someone, guess what, God is there. I was thinking about this and it made me wonder, if the Almighty God thinks this highly of us, why is it that we have such low opinions of ourselves ? I'm not saying be conceded, but I am saying why don't we have our head up and our chest out proclaiming, I'm a child of God. I know that some people have this notion that the enemy is that reason. Well, that's probably right, but if that is the case, then why are we letting him. If God is almighty and we do believe that, then we can have our Father who art in heaven fix that problem for us if we ask, remember , He's almighty so that isn't a problem for him at all. The second name I want to look at is Jehovah Nissi or (The Lord My Banner) Exd 17:1516 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn [that] the LORD [will have] war with Amalek from generation to generation. We've been studying these past few months about spiritual warfare. In order to fight for

something, you first have to believe in something. See what Moses did, by making that altar was to announce who He was fighting for. When the U.S military goes to war, the American flag is the banner under which they fight. For us , when we go to spiritual war, the name of the one true and living God is our banner under which we fight, but if you don't truly believe, you won't fight. Think about some of the immigrants here in America, they will tell you themselves that they don't like america, but they love the opportunites here. When we are considering our relationship with God, let's ask ourself this question, Am I truly in love with God, or am I just really in love with His gifts... 3rd name Qanna kan-naw') or (Jealous) Exd 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me; God is jealous of any and everything that we hold on to tighter than we hold on to Him. My wife and I had a discussion the other night and I was expressing my consern that xbox, was getting in the way of God. God blesses us with things to make us comfortable and happy, and because He loves us. We get things and little by little the things take up the room that was originally reserved for God. Then our life becomes so busy that we don't have time for God because or stuff needs attention. I can't read my bible, because my show is on. I'm too tired to pray, my bed is calling me. It finally stopped raining, I know its sunday, but the car is really dirty, I know that bible study is tonight, but I need my overtime. When we do that, we are really in worship with our things instead of being in worship with our God. The revelation that I got is this, we tend to obsess over things that we possess ,or own we don't obsess over God, because we can't own or possess God, he has to possess pr come into us and we don't like to give up control that easy. That's why its so hard for man to say yes to the Lord, because then man has to say yes to his will. Here is a list of the other names for God...... • • • El Elyon (The Most High God) Adonai (Lord, Master) Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)

• Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) I shall not want. The same God who was responsible for leading Israel out of egypt and sustaining them is the same God who to this day takes the time to know exactly how many hairs I have on my head. The same shephard who in times of trouble takes me by the hand and leads me beside still waters. • Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals) This is the one that gets a lot of people into situations they don't have to be in. True God is a miracle worker and can heal at the blink of an eye, and its wonderful to pray for a healing, but if someone is deathly ill, get them to a hosptal unless the Lord himself says something differently. I'm going to believe in the Lord for a miracle and the miracle is that God stored all of that knowledge into a doctor's head so he can treat us. I'm not saying don't pray and I'm not saying to put our belief in a doctor, i'm

saying use the blessings and the tools that God put here at our diposal, and as my mom would tell me use the common sense that God gave us. Back to the list of names • • Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There)

Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness)

The Lord is our moral compass, and Jesus is our moral example. Can I just vent and reveal something really quick, it really bothers me when people say that Jesus was perfect and Jesus was holy . The word was implies a past tense....the correct context to use was in reference to Jesus would be something like ...Jesus WAS resurrected, which means he IS alive ..... or Jesus WAS crucified, but He rose again, or I once WAS lost, but Jesus found me..... Okay that's off my chest now we can move on... • Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who sanctification who are we and what are we.... • El Olam (The Everlasting God) • Elohim (God) • Sanctifies You) and without

Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Do I really have to go into detail with his one or can we just rejoice and move on ?

If they rejoice move on if not go into...... ok so I guess we need and incentive to rejoice about God being a provider... then how about when he provided an healing for us, or how about when he provided funds for us ...or even better, how about when he provided a savior for us... • Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) • Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts) My next point is really a question...... Who is God to you? Is He your Most High God,is He your Almighty, your Master, Lord of Peace, your Lord Who Will Provide? Is He your Father? In our identification of God, we must be careful not to make God into an "it" or a "thing" to which we pray. He is our Jehovah Raah, the Lord our Shepherd. God knows us by our name, so isn't only right and respectful to know Him by His? The last thing that i want to get to is the word HALLOWED. To hallow a thing is to make it holy or to set it apart to be exalted as being worthy of absolute devotion. To hallow the name of God is to regard Him with complete devotion and love. God's name is of the utmost importanc and we should reserve a special position for it

in our minds and hearts. His name should never be taken lightly. As I close, I want to leave you with this thought. If we take the definition of hallowed , just the part where it says to make something Holy or to set it apart.....ask yourself, and I hallowed ? Am I holy and set apart from the world ? Is Hallowed be my name?
