Concept:
The World AIDS Day 2010 National celebrations will be at Kitebi Primary School in Wankulukuku-
Kampala District. The theme for this year’s WAD is Universal Access and Human Rights.
In relation to the celebrations UNFPA, in partnership with Uganda Red Cross Soceity, will conduct a
condom distribution activity at community level. 25 Boda Boda drivers, pre-trained in condom
distribution, will on WAD be ‘condom promoters’. The Boda drivers will given a helmet with a condom
shaped sticker saying – ‘have a safe ride’, a t-shirt with the same message and a condom distribution bag.
The distribution will target passengers, fellow Boda drivers as well as the broader community. While
being a condom distribution event, the activity also targets sensitization of a high risk group – the Boda
Boda drivers themselves. Through the training they will receive information about HIV/AIDS, risk
behaviour, prevention and condom use in addition to being trained as condom promoters.
On WAD there will be a handover ceremony, with the Press invited, where the Boda drivers will get their
helmets, t-shirts, distribution bags and certificates from the training.
Background:
The Boda Boda drivers cover all of the country and are a ‘living’ distribution network. They
have many passengers and the one-on-one interaction allows for discrete condom distribution.
The Boda Boda drivers are an integrated part of the everyday life in Uganda and very visible. By
wearing condom promotion messages on their helmets, bags, t-shirts, they become driving bill
boards.
At the same time the Boda Boda drivers themselves are a high risk group for HIV/AIDS, being
in the category of Mobile Men with Money. The nature of their work exposes them HIV/AIDS,
and studies have documented that they are predisposed to risks like prostitution, alcohol abuse
and above all passengers using sex as the mode of payment.
In conclusion there are three valuable dimensions in involving the Boda drivers in condom
distribution: a) Distribution, utilizing a extensive network at community level, b) Promotion of
condom use through the have a safe ride message, c) HIV/AIDS prevention among a High Risk
Group through the participatory training sessions on HIV/AIDS sensitization and risk reduction
means. The trainings may also act as a firm ground to re-echo safety means like use of helmets
and ensuring road sign usage. In addition the drivers will be trained as condom distributers,
utilizing their network and mobility for community distribution.
Goal: To increase condom use to prevent HIV/AIDS.
Activities:
Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) Kampala West Branch will be implementing the activity.
The branch has previous experience with training Boda Boda drivers as peer educators for
HIV/AIDS prevention. Activities include:
1
1. Select 25 trainees among the Boda Boda drivers in 5 different stages
2. Conduct a half day training on condom use and distribution among the drivers.
Demonstrate life planning skills as approaches in reducing the spread of STIs/HIV/AIDS
on the 31st November 2010. After the training the trained ‘condom distributors’ are given
condoms distribution bags, t-shirts, helmets and certificates from the training.
3. On WAD the drivers will distribute condoms to their passengers, fellow Boda drivers
and in the communities.
