Dear Dr. Oxburgh:
Thave in hand your most welcome letter, which
Ideem as confirming admission of my son, Ferdinand
Jr., to Oxford, and I am equally thankful that you have
been so good as to be straightforward in posing the
i challenge and possibly the difficulties that must be
i met and overcome by the youngster, indeed by all
Oxford undergraduates. This sets the proper perspective
for starting this momentous experience of our young
man,
Accordingly, I have discussed with him the
imperatives of life at Oxford, stressing the full commit-
ment of time and energy that he must give to his studies.
By successfully and honorably living up to this commit-
ment, he would not only make something of himself,
not only measure up to Oxford's high traditions and
requirements, but also justify displacing someone else
equally worthy -- as you had pointed out -~ in the
University.
I shall of course wholeheartedly sustain him in
his studies, for his sake and mine, wherever my help

may be heeded. As to his choice of study, I find your
Yecommendations sound, and I'm sure he will give
them very serious thought in making his final choice.
Mrs. Marcomand I thank you very much for
according our son the privilege of a place in Oxford,
fand we look forward with high hopes to his three years
in that great center of the mind and spirit.
