Environmental Leadership
Kermit the frog once said ‘it’s not easy being green.’

It may not be easy, but in the Town of Newmarket it is a way of life.

The Town continues to lead the way in environmental initiatives
and remains one of Canada’s most progressive environmental leaders.

Newmarket has celebrated numerous environmental

milestones, including:
• Canada’s greenest subdivision – first subdivision in Canada to be built to
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum standards
• A Pesticide and idle free community
• An Active Newmarket Environmental Advisory Committee (NEAC) that
participate in environmental policy and public advocacy
• A highly successful green bin program which has led to a
64% waste diversion rate
• A new Environmental Community Plan coming in 2010

For more information on Newmarket’s environmental initiatives please visit

www.newmarket.ca and click on environmental leadership
or e-mail neac@newmarket.ca.

WE’LL MANAGE
YOUR LEFTOVERS
Stewardship Ontario is pleased to be working in
partnership with Ontario municipalities to divert more
household hazardous waste from landfill.
This includes paint, coatings, solvents and their
containers; used oil filters; empty containers for all
types of oil, as well as hydraulic, power steering and
transmission fluids; single use, dry cell batteries;
automotive antifreeze; pressurized containers such
as propane tanks; fertilizers and pesticides and
their containers.
Try using them up or giving them away first. Leftover,
unwanted materials can be taken to many municipal
collection sites for reuse or recycling. Where this is not
possible, materials will be disposed of responsibly.
For a list of locations that accept these materials
go to dowhatyoucan.ca

Stewardship Ontario’s Do What You Can program is funded by the industries that make and distribute
these familiar household products, and in cooperation with municipal and commercial partners, works
to reduce waste through the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle).

West Nile virus Keep your yard mosquito free

Some mosquitoes carry West Nile virus and their bites may lead to West Nile virus infection. Clean up! The best way to keep mosquitoes away
is to clean up areas of standing water around your home where they like to breed.

• Clean up and empty containers where water collects

(old tires, tin cans, flower pots, etc.)
• Change water in bird baths weekly
• Remove water that collects on pool covers
• Turn over items such as wading pools, wheelbarrows
and small boats
• Clear leaves and twigs from eavestroughs, storm and roof gutters
• Unclog drainage ditches so that water flows freely
• Make sure swimming pool pump is circulating
• Clear out dense shrubbery where mosquitoes like to rest
• Turn over compost frequently
• Check that door and window screens are tight fitting
and in good repair
• Drill holes in the bottoms of containers so water can’t collect

Winter Weather Delays

Collection may be affected when weather packs a punch.
Snow, ice and wind can affect solid waste collection. Snow and ice make otherwise
‘flat’ roads and lanes difficult for the trucks to navigate safely, while hills can be
nearly impossible to service without the risk of property damage. Wind can also be
treacherous, creating roadblocks or hazards involving overhead lines.
At these times, the Town will error on the side of caution and temporarily post-
pone collection service until conditions improve.

In the event of inclement weather,

here’s what to do:
1. Throughout winter, please keep your sidewalk
and driveway shovelled and ensure your containers
are not hidden by snowbanks or other obstructions.
2. For garbage or recycling service alerts,
please visit www.newmarket.ca,
or phone 905-895-5193.
3. Please be patient. Servicing your home
is our priority – but the safety of people
and property always come first.
4. Do not place items on top of snowbanks.
